I've often held that a good antagonist needs to be in some way a reflection of the main protagonist.

In terms of video game characters, no antagonist emobides that priniple more than Pyramid Head.

The very nature of this character is that of the physical embodiment of the "hero's" suppressed violent and sexual urges.

He is literally the dark side of the player character made flesh.

This is why I love this game so much. It makes the psyche just as much of an enemy as the monsters.
