Apparently my name, in its original form, is "Von Donge" which, upon investigation from the family researching our roots, is Dutch.

If it´s Dutch I´d say it should be ´van´ not ´von´. ´Von´ means the same (=from) but then in German. Donge could well be the town/place where the family was residing when the French (Napoleontic times) obligated every civilian to take a surname. I don't know Donge, but I do know Dongen. A place ore in the South, Province of Brabant.
