The plot of this film comes from David Ogilvy's 1985 book 'Ogilvy on Advertising'.

On the surface it seems to be a ringing indictment of the power of words. But what does it actually prove? By tweaking a message, a beggar can be made a more successful beggar. What it doesn't do is address the factors that keeps the man in beggary. To see the problems of this approach, it's worth watching Slavoj Zizek talking on the RSA Animate 'First as Tragedy, then as Farce'.

I love this short, and it moved me as it did everyone else. BUT... I'm really pissed off at the woman in the end. All she gave him was a short term solution. You think the cardboard is going to last forever! She didn't tell him what she wrote, didn't leave any money, and she could have at least left her broad tip pen. He obviously had to use a crappy pen and scribble the words on the already worn out cardboard. Even if they cardboard lasted, how is he going to know what side she wrote on.
