I fell in love with America when this happened. I was an 8 year old English kid (son of a British army NCO) living in Germany (Rheindalen) I had been hit by a car and was in hospital in Waldniel. I watched this along with half the rest of the hospital on TV in the TV room at the hospital. It took me another 25 (33 years old) years to realize my dream of moving to the country I fell in love with when I was 8. I have been here 18 years and have never regretted it for a moment
The SatV vs The Shuttle is like the tortuse and the hare : the shuttle would leave the Sat V in the dust the first 3-4 mins...then yhev Sat would of blown past it.
I remember this one well. One thing that always stood out in my mind was watching the rocket lift off, then seeing how slowly it appeared to be climbing.
such daft irony, an asinine left wing partisan hack that had to walk away from the news desk in shame because he was so eager to frame Bush as a draft dodger that he outright lied to the American public, presenting a piece involving one of if not the most trusted, brave, un-biased, and downright kindhearted news men of all time.
@Erik0072 Unlike the spurious "birther" attacks on Obama, no one has ever come forward to say that they served with Bush when he supposedly transferred from the Texas Air National Guard to the Alabama Guard. He asked for the transfer to work on a family friend's campaign. He did the campaign work, but the only record of attendance for his guard hitch is that he had some dental work done at the base. The accusation was that he didn't show up his training sessions and/or was not fit for duty.
@TheJenr8tr Garry Trudeau of "Doonesbury" offered a $50,000. prize to ANYONE that could place Georgieboy Bush at the Airbase he was supposed to report to during his Alabama Air National Guard days. So far NO ONE has stepped forward to claim it.
@bburkie55 Ah, no....................The monetary award was for $10,000 to be donated in the winners name to the U.S.O. Most of Bush's time was spent with the Texas Air National Guard. If you research you would have found out that Bush was indeed seen and did serve for a short while in the Alabama Air National Guard. To prove my point C.B.S. News anchor Dan Rather was fired for trying to tell the same lie that you are!
I was approaching my 9th birthday when they went to the moon. For a kid, the whole idea of the thing was exciting. However, the reality of watching the men going to the moon on TV was very boring for me. I was glued to it, but often fell asleep and was indignant when my Dad carried me to bed. I couldn't really understand what the adults were all talking about too. And when they got to the moon it seemed to take forever for them to get out and walk around, which was what I really wanted to see.
USA is the best country with the smartest people...Now if we would only nuke the Afgan border...The American Empire going to take control of you soon....Long live the USA.
You know it's incredible how he can just breeze through the flight plan briefing. By 1969 contemporary audiences were so much better educated about astronautics than they are today, you didn't need to explain basic orbital mechanics.
At 2:09 of this clip, you can see the very beginning of CBS's broadcast of the Apollo 11 launch, which was at 6 A.M. EDT on July 16, 1969 (three and a half hours before launch; ABC and NBC also went on the air at that hour as well).
The likely reason the three networks went on that early was that just after 6 A.M. EDT, the astronauts left their crew quarters to head out to the pad (seen at 3:28 of this clip).
The liftoff footage is a compilation of various films that were fitted to the actual audio, the way this video is portrayed is not at all real since "film" takes time to develop...all "live" news broadcasts were video taped (the same clarity you'd see the reporter doing the news), as an example look at the sharpness of video from 5:45 to 5:52 and compare it to the grainy film at 6:36
Just think about it, the animation at 2:13 probably cost thousands of dollars and was done on a computer the size of a living room. How far we've come and how far we've gone.
I remember I was 11 years old when me and my Family were tuned in to watch Walter Cronkite broadcasting this event. I even remembered the theme music that introcduced the broadcast. I bought the VHS tape when it first hit the store. And now it's on YOUTUBE. Amazing. Watching this documentary is like it happened only a few years ago. Thank you for posting.
The Apollo moon missions were faked in a studio. There's a partial summary of hoax evidence posted on a science forum. To see it, google "The Naked Scientists". In the "New Theories" section of the forum there's a thread entitled "Did We Land on the Moon"?. The summary is on page 15. It's the 7th post from the top.
I remember watching this on the 20th anniversary in 1989. I'm curious if the title sequence with the Jules Verne type shots of the moon was part of the original broadcast in 1969.
There is posted on YT an extensive (10 hours and more) selection of coverage from November 1963, when the man who started all this was killed by a supreme narcissist and laid to rest by a mournful nation. The only way to rid myself of the sadness of that viewing was to come here - and see the results of throwing off self-interest and base desires, to put one's efforts into something constructive and beyond one's pitiful individual life. RIP JFK, long live Aldrin, Armstrong, and Collins.
Where's the audio? I played this video a couple of days ago and it was fine. Now there is no audio. This whole set of Man On The Moon videos has no audio now. Any idea what is wrong?
i had the same thought! just started reading buzz aldrin's new book. amazing to think that the computers they had on-board had less RAM then today's cell phones.
I can't really tell when this was showed on TV. Maybe compare the way Dan Rather looks in other reports. This may have been made and shown in 1979, them put out on VHS in 1989.
and I were watching this I remember Walter telling Wally "the building's shaking!" I'll never forget this moment! I have this original broadcast on audio casette tape. I turned my audio recorder on because I knew it was a historic moment. I have listened to it every July in the intervening years and still have it to this day. I like this one, the audio is crystal clear. Thanks so much for the memories!
Thanks for sharing your memories. Like you I was watching it with my mother, but I was about 3 months old at the time so I don't remember very much of it :)
The Saturn V was actually called the "Old mans rocket" because it was the only rocket designed from the ground up for space travel, therefore it took off at about 60-70 mph however that speed becomes hard to see when the object is almost a 40 story building ( jets in the sky sometimes seems as though they barely move and are much smaller), anyway the Saturn V gets into earth orbit at about 17,500 mph which is the same as the shuttle however after a few orbits it leaves for the moon at 24,600 mph
If you can find "Cronkite Remembers" there is film of the 1967 Saturn V launch when Cronkite tried to hold the blast window. I think there was a Soviet trawler observing from offshore....
Getting the monster Saturn V off the ground and the spacecraft safely into orbit was the hardest part - the knowledge of physics required to get them to the moon is very basic.
