The smashing pumpkins were never really grunge, The songs are way too well written to be grunge songs. There are about 3 different songs smashed into one SP song. It's more prog rock with a grunge/fuzz edge.
@kevman5 No other music really sounds like SMP to me. I could possibly describe some songs as almost being emo, where as some are just good, rockin, alternative. Whatever their classification, i love the pumpkins.
@ecalago Her and James broke up really early in the band's history, she married Kerry Brown from Catherine sometime in the early 90's and they divorced a few years later. Now she's a crackhead hermit in Michigan... :(
the reason why i remain nonplussed about todays music is because , just like fashion, they bring nothing new to the table. the 70s was a big contrast to the music of the 60s, as was the 90s to the 80s... in the turn of the century, we've seen a lot of electronica and fusion of good music and yet not one genre sticks out to identify this era. we are turned off because the 2000s (and beyond) borrow so heavily from the past eras, losing its "identity" in the process.
and just to make things clear, smashing pumpkins music will always be dear to me because of the innovativeness of the fuzz, the simplicity of the melodies, the genuineness of grunge. todays music is technical and impressive, but just not fun :)
Man..i f***n' miss the '90s when MTV used to be MTV not just some tv channel...when music was made with feeling, when music expressed an idea. when the rhythm of music made you to stand up and dance/headbang or anything else. Thumbs up if u feel the same!!

@beerstudd76 Well if you look at songs like disarm Billy sings about his tough childhood and most S.D. music videos have kids in them along with the album cover, mellon collie has alot of angst based songs aswell as love/obsession songs like where boys fear to thread and zero which goes well with the teen theme. Also the song 1979 is pretty much about being young and free. Then Adore is alot about coming to terms with loss which is what happends to most adults. I dunno just my interpretation

@mx59trax I agree That metal is the only genre left with any real feeling, but since I am a metalhead I cant agree that it is sad at all. : P . What is sad that there is no music in the mainstream anymore that is "real" by any means compared to the 80's, 90"s etc.

one of our Top Ten videos of the 20th and 21st Century...and we are not even close to being Pumper Fans....but we will always have a special place in our hearts for this video.
When we saw them the week this video came out, live in Chicago they showed this viseio right over the band, and although I am not a big fan it was truly awesome, even with the loud 'Ka-BLAM!' echo sound at the end ..everyone went wild and the smoke filled the stage and, every SINGLE instrumnet wire, bottle of water, person were absolutely gone...iT WAS QUITE A 'PUMPKIN' MOMENT...
from what I've read of, about and by Billy he seems to feel that these kinds of things [childhood and innocence] he missed, in a way, by his situation and urban/suburban society. To listen to all of his material is a very revealing portrait of a (what he perceived as, imo) hard and troubling childhood, for very silly, stupid, ignorant adult reasons.
Awesome vid! I love concept vids. I miss those days. This was one of the last good ones-when rock bands still made valid vids.
Reminds me when I was a kid. We used to try to make traps to catch Bigfoot using smashed up poisonous berries and a deadfall. We used to try to build airplanes out of plywood too. I F**king love this video, man!
In 1876, a young girl named Jenn was walking down a river, an insane man killed her by stabbing her in the back, raping her, and then hanging her in his closet. While he hanged her he said Bukakke Bukkake.
Now that you have read this message, she will find you and her dead body will haunt your house for 5 years. Every night you go to sleep she will appear in your closet, hanging their with her glowing red eyes.
Love this song. Best on the album. Anyone ever see the bootleg of them in Koln Germany doing this song? I dont think Billy had the words yet and he just mumbles. Maybe I should post it
It's videos like this that gives everyone that nice feeling to know that the Pumpkins' work is "Everlasting" and timeless and definitely shall never be forgotten!
The greatest band of my generation, if only for siamese dream if nothing else. James I'ha the best guitarist of the last 20 years, why oh why are they not still together?
Does anyone else find themselves hearing the first chords to Disarm straight after this finishes??
Lovely the whole skewed suburbia thing going on here á la Blackhole Sun etc.
Sigh the 90s ...

im curious to know why a vast number of the Pumpkins songs are about childhood and innocence.
Anarchistsdontsleep 3 years ago
from what I've read of, about and by Billy he seems to feel that these kinds of things [childhood and innocence] he missed, in a way, by his situation and urban/suburban society. To listen to all of his material is a very revealing portrait of a (what he perceived as, imo) hard and troubling childhood, for very silly, stupid, ignorant adult reasons.

billy mentions angel wings alot too

the song methusela is very revealing about his inner repressions, as it is a good song as well.

I can't find it on here, except a cover by 'shatteringglass' bugger.

Since I am a devotee of Smashing Pumpkins, I will say that I know there is another version a more extended version to this video. I remember it.
It's just like what they always do.
I guess the real Sci Fi movie DUNE will never be seen because we only eat bananna pudding and baby apple pudding.

I'd never considered it but the last few seconds are the results of leaving the earth in a space craft that travels close to the speed of light.

It's videos like this that gives everyone that nice feeling to know that the Pumpkins' work is "Everlasting" and timeless and definitely shall never be forgotten!

this is actually the original version. The ones popping up on youtube are solely the performance footage.

The greatest band of my generation, if only for siamese dream if nothing else. James I'ha the best guitarist of the last 20 years, why oh why are they not still together?
