Thank you @teacherofculture for posting this historical account up for us to see. I can say most certainly that it is an important account of the life and times of Micheal Manley.
Dynamic, visionary, progressive and revolutionary...powerful interview...this man was way ahead of his time and we can argue too far ahead of his own people...
@lerryperry you have the right to your opinion even though misguided but this was the best leader Jamaica has ever and will ever see..Edward Seaga was a sham and the rest were all the same. Michael was no duttyman....he was your Leader you idiot!!! I bet you could not say that to his face when he was alive!!
This dutty man is the reason why jamaica is the cesspool that it is now!! it would have been far better for his parents to have used contraception at the time he was conceived!! I do not miss him one bit!!
One of the greatest ,leader, speaker and humanitarian Jamaica and the world has ever seen. I personally benefited from the free education , lunch and educational support.
please listen to how michael articulated his ideology for which he stood for and share with the people of jamaica and with an intent to improved the lives of the majority of its people. god bless his soul
michael manley is the greatest jamaican who ever lived. i loved this man so much, the only persons i loved more are god & jesus christ. this man has impacted me as a youth & even to this day as a man, i still cannot shake the influence. i grieved the day he died, but chrerished memories of the works of this great man.i remember his words"power to the people." he was a visionary, a man who came & went before his time, long live michael manley, may your soul live in peace. you are surely missed.
Nice drop Teacher! , Michael Manley has to be the best speaker I have ever seen, almost "accentless" to the point and enlightening. Implementing ideas is another story but I think that was the best general plan for Jamaica at that time.
Well maybe if he never start link wid castro, his name would not have been demonised, stay wey from dem weird communists....the country did deteriorate under him too cuz linkin wid castro caused the US to turn away.
This is the greatest and only true leader Jamaica ever had. How dare anyone compare him to that ass hole called Seaga. seaga is not even a Jamaica. He has turned Tivoli into a den of murderers and extortionists.
@rqztaz .....really him use to attend wolmers boys school..so i guess he came to jamaica at a very early age ...but that doesnt mean he isnt jamaican..his parents could be jamaicans who lived in the us ...and then decided to migrate...which makes him still jamaican and eligible to become prime minister....just like in the us..if u were borned in another country by american parent/parents...u cn still be president of the united states!..
@IamAbillionaireNow but that doesnt make him ameircan...he is still a jamaican by blood hence nothing is wrong with him being prime minister...he was just borne in the united states..his parents are syrian jamaicans...and wicki is nt a credible site.
@TheJoshy2881 I shared the info to bring clarity. The Wiki bio is correct. Seaga's parents took him to Jamaica at age 3 months so he is not an American who just returned to Jamaica,to rule a country he knew nothing about. He was raised there & like most countries' laws Jamaica permits a child born abroad to assume the same nationality as the parents. Seaga is an American-born Jamaican National.
Michael Manley became PM without the personal maturity that Mandela had when he assumed leadership. He had a genuine desire to help the common Jamaican (not shared by most of his successors) and excellent practical programmes to achieve his objectives, but NO CLUE regarding human nature. Mandela embraced and used the exploiters - Manley alienated them and paid the price.
No-one who so positively affected the lives of so many can be called a failure, but he could have achieved so much more.
@ilalfisto Mandela sold out real progress in South Africa. Neo-Colonialism isn't success it is selling out the masses for simple concessions. Manley did not press hard enough against the anti-Jamaican forces in Jamaica.
@allianceFiLifeDotCom I think that you either were not in Jamaica in the 70s, or else you VASTLY overestimate the power of a 3rd World leader (as did Manley to his own detriment). Most of the steps taken by Manley for the benefit of EVERYONE in Jamaica would be considered moderate in most 1st World countries, but:
1. the JA middle class did/does not want to share scarce benefits, and
2. the US would not tolerate his getting chummy with Cuba.
@allianceFiLifeDotCom I'm not defending either the US Govt, the Jamaican middle class, or the supporters of apartheid in SA, but battle must be engaged with goals clearly set, and a realistic assessment of the opposing forces. Mandela's goal was maximising the benefits for the people of SA, and he understood that trying to punish the apartheid class would have been short-sighted.
Manley believed that the shortest distance to the objective is in a straight line - it rarely is!
@ilalfisto there was nothing maximum about what Mandela did he simply was used by the tiny racist minority to pacify and cap what could have been real success.

You seem like one of those persons who are deep neo-liberal capitalists. You must have been on one of those five flights out of Ja at the time. Listen to what he is closely saying and look at both sides of the fence i.e, neo-liberalism and democratic socialism.
Democratic socialism to the world!! Its just not sustainable in a country that builds its economy on borrowed money, but Canada is doing it now western Europe is deeply socialist and nobody says shit..but likkle Jamaica try a ting and the whole world falls down.
oh really why did manley win then if everything was peechy in JA Manley was ACTIVELY undermined by the USA, because they feared he was going communist and because he decided to charge them a levy on bauxite.
Idiots like you cant seem to get that fact and blame manley for everything.
He was a good leader who did the best he could for thepeople with what he had to work with
The economic decline started BEFORE manley, thats what facilitated his rise and VOCTORY over hugh Shearer. And You said our last payment toi the IMF was in 1992?
Who was priminister then?
Michael Manley. Whose talking the nonsense now you dumb fuck
@3star2nr Shearer benefited under the British pound and shilling, which was backed by slavery and colonialism. It was Seaga who change the currency to Ja. dollars. However, if Michael Manley had gotten the chance to impliment his ideology the Ja. dollar would be strong and we would have a prosperous economy. No one in his normal sense can never compare the great Michael to Seaga and Shearer. Manley was ahead of his time and many things he said is now coming to past.
@cello1232 Your comment is born of ignorance. Clearly you are too young to have lived the times of these leaders so do not comment on things you know nothing about. If you want an education just ask.
dont need to lie the facts are right there. Manley also got off of the IMF's Cock. Which Bruce golding was more than happy to start sucking again.
Manley realised the only way to advance the country is to increase production, and to charge sensible prices on our exports, and not just take abuse from foreign countries
brukins i ask you who made the working eviron for the average jamaican humane by implementing minimum wage and maternity leave which are among the myriad of progressive reforms made by "JOSHUA". i say this: the only better leader Jamaica would have had and to a lesser degree did have was Norman "Moses" Manley
@brukins Yes by giving the the average Jamaican free education and affordable housing. Please before Micheal Manley a person of dark complexion couldn't even work as a teller in a bank .
Vanderlot your comments are most unfortunate and demonic and we should pray for God to judge you now so that we can be glad LOL...one thing is for sure though is that you have wishful thinking because Manley was and is the most beloved leader Jamaica has ever seen along with Bob Marley...
Manley was not no cia puppet so it was a problem. elite enjoyed benefits of spoils of colonial slavery. he got carried away with communist Castro. in the end he knew he got carried away between pull between russia and usa cold war strugle between good and evil.
i know charismatic leaders can have devastating effects but to attribute his failings to his personality is simplistic. Affording every citizen basic social rights which go a far way in Human Development (Cuba is way ahead of us and were democratic) is vital for any economy. Economic growth doesn't always equate to development as was evident during the 60's when only your social class raped and benefited from black Jamaicans. No social development was evident.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
