I lived in Miami Beach 1980-82 and The Carillon and Deauville were my favorite hang outs. The Carillon has since been mutilated by re-developers. I love Mid Century Modern
Can ayone help me out with the location of the former 'Copa City' nightclub? ... I understand it was later 'The Riviera' and is nowadays a self-storage site ... Any input would be greatly welcome ... Cheers, Julia
Thank you for adding this informative video clip! ... As a friend of modern architecture I find it very saddening that especially mid-century structures aren't valued higher by most local governments ... So many buildings of that era fall for '(re-)development', before the majority will realize what treasures were lost forever ...
You're very welcome! These buildings certainly are a treasure - Miami's new MiMo district shows that at least some people in our local government feel like they're worth preserving.
Yes, especally the MiMo on Bibo is worth visiting for everyone who visits or lives in Florida ... Just wished more of the smaller early to mid-20th century solitaire structures with historical, architectual value would be saved from the 'development' hysteria ... Once they are gone, they are gone ... I thought so many times, when I pass(ed) such in the greater Miami area *hollywood etc) ... Cheers, Julia
Randall Robinson's book on Mimo really is very good, and quite entertaining. It's hard to know what to think ultimately about this as a style, but it is clear, particularly in this video that it hangs together well as a style, and that is saying something. Seen from most art historic perspectives it has a bleakness, no arguing that. On the other hand, with the excellent perspective of the granddaughter, who said perceptively that is is about "getting away from it all",as escape from art, success
