Bernadette is so vocally wrong for this brassy role. She can act it great but she shouldn't be singing this kind of show music. It doesn't naturally sit well in her vocals and I fear the strain it caused her. It's painful to hear. The score was specifically written for Ethel Merman's voice. Bernadette ain't got a big Merman voice.
This definitely the best version of this song ever! Bernadette really did capture the true essence of the REAL Rose! You can hear her desperation in this song... you know at this point that it is Rose who wants to be in the spotlight and Bernadette portrays the anger so well in this song. Patti LuPone butchered this role (in my opinion) ... Bernadette IS Rose, even the real June said so.
Okay maybe all the people who don't like this video should go and listen to some other Mama Rose. I for one would like to have this exceptional video kept clear of overly critical comments about someone else played this part better. Bernadette Peters is not worse, she is just different. I think she is better but that is my opinion and I love Gypsy so much that who plays Rose doesn't matter much.
Pretty & talented Ms Peters is a true national treasure! Gifted actress & singer. THANKS for posting this...one of my fave Broadway show tunes! You've made my day & my week! CHEERS!!! :-)
She sounds terrific. Does anyone have a video of this. I liked this better than Patti LuPone's version which I saw live and at the Tony's. I still think Betty Buckley should have had a chance to play Rose on Broadway. I loved her in New Jersey! Check her out on Seth Rudetsky's Live on Broadway radio show last year.

Peters was laughably awful and if you are under 50, what do you really have to compare to? Did you see Tyne Daly, whose acting was peerless? Or Lansbury whose sheer magnetism was astonishing? Or the great Delores Gray? LuPone's acting was sensational, singing volcanic and sloppy all at the same time. Peters was so miscast and unfunny.
@theblueangel28 Patti's had plenty of genuine moments on stage. Yes, she's a total diva, but that doesn't change the fact that she's an extremely talented woman. In the right role, with the right material, with the right director (i.e., one who's not intimidated by her), she can be phenomenal. It's an overused phrase, but she IS a classically trained actress.
Did you see her in "Sweeney Todd"? She was just spectacular in it.
I loved her in "Gypsy" too. Thought she really inhabited Rose.
@boynamedalexxx i loved Patti as Lovett, for me shes the only actress who really pulled off the impossible complexity of the role and songs. Lovett is so weird, shes goulish, but also the warmth, and to me Lansbury didnt pull it off, and neither did anybody else.
for me Patti is Evita, thats the oinly thing she done that I love I just couldnt hang with her Mama Rose, it seemed to only be striving for importance and acty
@theblueangel28 Really? You didn't like Lansbury? Not berating your opinion, just curious, since it's rare to see anyone say they didn't care for her in a role. For me, she defined the character, and it took a radically new, different interpretation like Patti's to really bring it to new life. Other than those 2, have there really been any notable Lovett's? There's Julia McKenzie who looked awesome in the part, but there's no recording of the OLC.
@boynamedalexxx yeah i know. nope, I dont care for Angela Lansbury onstage. i dont like Mame Lovett or Mama Rose. i feelshe doesnt root the character in anything strongly enough. i like her on film, jessica fletcher bedknobs/broomsticks, but for me thats it.
the issue i have with Lovett is you have to justify her contributing to murder, loving a man who butchers people, and then caring for toby and fearing sweeney. the script doesnt support the duality, and only patti has made it work, for me
@theblueangel28 The book totally justifies Lovett's actions. She's a practical, albeit amoral woman trying to survive. She's in love with Sweeney, which explains nearly everything she does. She's a wannabe middle-class-business woman. And the relationship with Tobias varies depending on the actress' interpretation. Remember, also, she is the true villain of the show. Her actions all have different shades, for audiences to pick up on during subsequent viewings.

@boynamedalexxx like it shouldnt be that hard to get, or that hard for the actress to have to work. im over the moon for Into The Woods and Sunday/Park. those are also very complicated roles and songs, but the actions are fleshed out, justified, and clear. i dotn mind having to do a lot of work, Longs Days Journey, Lion In Winter, that lot, are my favorite plays. and I love Sweeney, just not that role.
and hey thanks, i havent talked about theatre in a long time
@theblueangel28 It's cool I'm not trying to say 'you're wrong' per se, but it's important to understand that the libretto doesn't have to include everything you listed. The basic directions are there, but the rest is meant to be explored by the director and actors, as it should be. I actually think Lovett is far more complex than Todd (she's much more the star of the show). She has much more depth and character to her. Her songs are all essential to who she is.
@theblueangel28 Also, if you haven't, read Sondheim's "Finishing The Hat". He fills in a lot of things about "Sweeney" & Lovett that you may have interpreted as flaws. Really, even things I hadn't seen before are explained. & they're all in the songs, I just never saw them. For me, an actor (as Sweeney) has to be really outstanding to outshine Lovett in a production, she's just a much better character, I think. Not that Sweeney's not fantastic.
& I enjoy analyzing theatre, too, obviously, lol.
Bernadette is incredible. I am always amazed at how much resonance her voice has!! And she has kept that "little girl" top note quality to boot! Fantastic!!
Well, I've no idea who this person is, but she's the only performer that I've ever heard sing the triplets properly - so 10/10 as far as I'm concerned.
Everyone knows Bernadette lacks in the crazy-belt-your-voice-off department that's so popular in Broadway now. That's not what makes her a showstopper, she handles her voice perfectly, and is always completely connected with her character. You will always leave the theater a better person after seeing Bernadette Peters on stage.
@Puppies140 I have to respectfully disagree, i saw Patti on broadway, and she was absolutely FLAWLESS! if you going by the cast recording, it has a slightly different feel than the stage version. Patti was born to play Rose.
@TheLogicOfMe Sorry, Bernadette was born to play Rose. Patti would never have been allowed to play Rose had Arthur Laurents not had a hard on for Sam Mendes. Case closed.
@wiccaryan Yes she has a cast recording I love Bernadette and the way she sings the songs I LOVE it, but over all I think was miscast which is going against my Bernadette love lol. I also Love Angela And Patti. I would say 1. Patti 2. Angela and 3. Bernadette.
I love Bernadette in this role -- Even though her voice isn't top notch in these recordings, I love the sound of it because it really sounds like a domineering and selfish stage mother. Patti's powerful and that's great, but Bernadette makes the character seem so much more delicate and fragile. According to all the other actresses, that's not how Rose was, but I see Bernadette's and Rosalind's as the most human and believable Roses.
Okay you dipshits, let me just say it is obvious that most of you are not familiar with Bernadette's work. SHE HAS ALWAYS HAD A SOMEWHAT RASPY QUALITY TO HER VOICE!!! If you listen to her voice throughout her entire career, even back when she was in her 20's, she sounded like this. It is NOT her straining or not being vocally strong, it is how HER REAL VOICE sounds! As someone who has seen her in most of roles I can say she always sings in this way. She cannot help how she naturally sounds.
I agree, Bernadette's voice has had a small amount of rasp to it, but during the early half of her run (when this was recorded) she was suffering from a viral infection.
@ndrwmls10 She is a naturally strong singer. You must be pretty out of the loop to think she sounds terrible. When you have a 50 year career and just your name alone above the title of a show can bring in ticket sales...then you can judge. Just saw her in 'A Little Night Music' tonight and she is INCREDIBLE!!! The audience adores her and gave her a standing ovation like I have never seen!! I agree with Brathford!!
@KellyBevel Like I said, it's my opinion, not yours. You love her, that's fine. I think she is a wonderful person and a somewhat great actress, but to me her singing voice is like nails on a chalk board. You and a lot of other people don't agree. Trust me I get just as frustrated at people like me who say Patti Lupone is a terrible actress or singer. But alas it's our own opinions and not anyone else's.

I adore Bernadette Peters but this was THE worst performance I have ever seen on Broadway. Tyne Daly was magnificent, not a vocal powerhouse, but her acting was matchless. And I had the pleasure of stage managing a week of the great Delores Gray-THE best Rose's Turn. Peters was a pipsqueak in this role. It was embarrassing. Even La Gross LuPone was better. Lansbury was miscast but powerful and Merman was NO actress.
and I have to tell you, Bernadette did it for me. She's always had that little scratch, that little strain in her voice. Her performance was magnificent - in a strangely received revival of the musical. It was SO much better produced than Patti's summer stock version.
I think it's ridiculous that Bernadette's role of Mama Rose had the highest keys of all of them: Angela, Tyne, even PATTI!
Why didn't they just lower it for her? The role of Mama Rose isn't about how high she can belt, it's about the struggle of the character. Like I said, even Patti LuPone who is an amazing singer sang this a half-step lower. Angela sang it a whole step lower. Amazing jobs both of them!
It upsets me as a Bernadette fan to know that this score hurt her voice so much.
I hear it, too, but it should have a desperate, almost unhinged tone, as she's just lost her "star" (her other daughter) and all the supporting players; it's as if she won't acknowledge that reality, or is trying to banish it by force of will...
was it an unintentional metaphor? her & her lot are always reaching for beyond their means/station :) lupone rather used the song to showcase her amazing skills and imagination, but it's a bit disconcerting to hear a master thespian passing off as a disadvantaged woman. BP brings that "back of the bus" mentality/vocal reality to it??
They ACT the part BELIEVABLY without screaming and being ridiculous. I do love Patti and Bette, but come on Mama Rose would NOT have acted like that.
Bernadette's 'Rose' is more vulnerable; she's less physically imposing and there's a certain timbre to her voice that makes her more fragile than, say, Ethel.
In my opinion, Bernadette Peters is the ONLY Mama Rose Broadway has ever seen. I'm singing this song for the musical theatre show I'm in at school, and I'm SO excited.
i think everyones missing the point of the song and the character behind mama rose she isnt supposed to sing it perfectly. like basically she is a drunk and a mental case and shes supposed to have one of those just WACK voices like Peters and Middler .. everyone else just seems to play a part, but there is so much emotion this version and i find this and bette's (both natural Gingers too) to be the best
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
God her vocals just aren't up to this role. The only reason she was cast for this revival was because of her name. It's as though investors didn't even audition her. Oh well, I can't really complain. Because of her utter commercial and critical failure s Rose, we got Patti's Tour de Force a short four years later!
i know we've had a delightful exchange about this, but do you have to sound so mean? She's not ethel or patti or tyne in her sound, but that's why the ones who like her LIKE HER.
Not my fav rendition of this song. I am a diehard fan of Bernadette, but shes not the best mama rose. i think she took a risk doing this role so different, so she gets props for that, but unfortunately it wasnt accepted very well. so can people please stop trashing her version. It wasnt well accepted, but musically and artistically its not bad, so can we at least on that? please?
I love LuPone and Peters but I think Peters definatly puts more feeling into the character. But Bette Midler is also very good as rose escpially for this song and the last song Rose's turn. So for me all three do Rose in their own way.
whatever. bernadette peters actually interprets the role. Lupone just shouts and acts crazy. no interpretation, just loud virtuosity for its own sake. yawn.
I saw her in the middle of the run and she was outstanding. I hate when people compare her and patti bc i have seen both of them and they were both flawless, in diffrent ways. they bring diffrent things to the role. Each one got a standing ovation after Rose's turn.
I agree, I enjoyed and disliked certain things about both their performances, and I really think people need to get the hell over it and stop comparing them. I like Patti's Everything's Coming Up Roses better, but I definitely like Bernadette's Rose's Turn better than Patti's by far, Patti goes a little too crazy in that one IMO.
People are using the infection she got as an excuse but it is an effect. She got that infection because she was trying to get this score mout of her throat 8 nights a week she wasnt physically capable.
Fankly, Bernadette peters voice isnt strong enough to be Mamma Rose but she does put a diferent spin on the book having less of a physical prescence than her predesesors (Merman Daly Midler ect.)so all in all she was a good choice for rose as long as her vocal chords could handle the score day after day.
Bernadette is so vocally wrong for this brassy role. She can act it great but she shouldn't be singing this kind of show music. It doesn't naturally sit well in her vocals and I fear the strain it caused her. It's painful to hear. The score was specifically written for Ethel Merman's voice. In my opinion, Bernadette Peters is the ONLY Mama Rose Broadway has ever seen. I'm singing this song for the musical theatre show I'm in at school, and I'm SO excited.

I love Bernadette Peters <3 But I have to say, I do like Patti's version of this song a bit better

i think everyones missing the point of the song and the character behind mama rose she isnt supposed to sing it perfectly. like basically she is a drunk and a mental case and shes supposed to have one of those just WACK voices like Peters and Middler .. everyone else just seems to play a part, but there is so much emotion this version and i find this and bette's (both natural Gingers too) to be the best

I really like Bernadette for this role, she doesn't sound like a man like most of the other renditions, theres an actual sweetness

This comment has received too many negative votes show
God her vocals just aren't up to this role.

So for me all three do Rose in their own way.

i totally agree with mwilson345
patti is an acquired taste that i just didn't acquire

Lupone: Tony Award, the Drama Desk Award, the Outer Critics Circle Award and the Drama League's Distinguished Performance Award - enough said.....

I didn't realize Dainty June sang this song........
As Lupone said picking up her Tony - to play a role this well written and not win a tony - you must be doing something really wrong....
aavauxhall 3 years ago
whatever. bernadette peters actually interprets the role. Lupone just shouts and acts crazy. no interpretation, just loud virtuosity for its own sake. yawn.

Yeaaah....Im gonna have to agree with aavauxhall...

that's because we don't have critics anymore. all we have are taste makers.

Its a shame, she must have pushed voice when she was younger as well, it sound like permanant damage to me.
TeaCup120 3 years ago
@TeaCup120, she's always sounded like this. Her voice isn't damaged.

People are using the infection she got as an excuse but it is an effect. She got that infection because she was trying to get this score mout of her throat 8 nights a week she wasnt physically capable.
Selendomono 3 years ago
I saw her play Rose live, and after this song, she practically had to be carted off the stage.
spongebobmusicals 3 years ago
Was it because of the respiratory infection she had during the run? Did she just start to get sick?

By "Annie days" you mean when she was in Annie Get youre Gun right?
Selendomono 3 years ago
Fankly, Bernadette peters voice isnt strong enough to be Mamma Rose but she does put a diferent spin on the book having less of a physical prescence than her predesesors (Merman Daly Midler ect.)so all in all she was a good choice for rose as long as her vocal chords could handle the score day after day.
Selendomono 3 years ago
It's a shame her voice started to deteriorate to soon. She would have back in the Annie days.
