During the 1970's (76 I think?) a MIG 25 pilot defected to Japan. When the US engineers inspected the MIG 25, they were less than impressed. It was considered to be mediocre from n engineering point of view and it most certainly was not a fighter. It had poor levels of manouevrability, it was purely designed to go high & fast, not dogfight. The MIG 25 is overated.
Wait wait wait wait wait. Since when was the SR-71 a competitor to the Mig-25? SR-71 was not an interceptor, it was used for reconnasiance. Actually, there might be no competitor to the Mig-25. What interceptor did we have that matched the capabilities of the Mig-25? None. I guess you could say the F-15 is, but that's an air supremacy fighter, not interceptor. Maybe the only competitor would be the XB-70, which it was designed to intercept. I honestly don't know :O

The Soviets were scared of a possible attack from a Mach 3 Nuclear Bomber, so they rushed to build a high altitude, high speed interceptor and came up with the Mig-25. Western Intelligence thought the Mig-25 was some high-tech air superiority fighter, which is why they scrambled to build the F-15. The F-15 was built on a non-existant fighter really. That's some of the interesting things that happened in the Cold War.

Max speed is 3200 km/h for MiG-25P and 3000 for MiG-25M.
But unofficial record is 3395 km/h in Egypt

there are reports of isrealis clocking a mig 25 at over 4000 km/h and mig 25 outrunning f 15s missiles
