Piecing and Quilting on the Janome Horizon 7700 Sewing Machine

Hi! I often watch your vid's and really appreciate this video post on your janome, since I have the same. I am wondering if you can assist me with a questions I have in respect to thread painting. Have you done this on your janome? If so, do you have any practical set-up tips? For instance do you hoop your fabric, do you use a stabilizer, can you use your twin needles, do you have any suggestions for tension set up? Your assistance would be greatly appreciated T/Yand happy stitching :)

I've been very frustrated with my machines! VERY frustrated! I started out on a Pfaff -- that was busted in a few months, and I exchanged it for a BabyLock. That has been giving me problems for the past couple years, so when I took it back to the store for the umpteenth time I demanded a new machine that simply WORKS. The recommended the Janome. To be perfectly honest, I didn't know if it was going to work; my other machines all seemed good for the first week. THANK you for this review!

Leah, doesn't the Horizon have a type of 'last stitch memory' setting where you can tell it to remember what settings you had when you left off?

I will be surprising my daughter with a Janome as a gift. I'd say she is a newer/intermediate level stitcher and is currently using a sometimes available Singer that is loaned to her. Janome is what she prefers. Is the Janome 7700 primarily for quilting or can she also do garment and other work on this as well? She does not quilt yet but has plans to and so I'd prefer to get her a machine that she can grow with and not out of -but- I don't want to frustrate her with the wrong machine.

Your video good! I've had Horizon for 11 mo. - find is much easier to use than the Juki. Any suggestions for a problem I had? Senario: twin size quilt...heavy, cotton batting...did most of it in hand quilting, but wanted to FMQ along a 2 inch wide sashing strip- following fabric design of small diamond shapes ...stitch good on top, but icky looping of top thread on bottom even tho sample stitching OK..tried D1S as well as #93. Always use gloves, supr.slider ,machine level with cabinet toop.

@dehbc54 - It really could be a lot of different things - first check your bobbin (make sure it is wound properly), then check your thread (are you using the same on top and the bobbin?), then check your tension, then your needle. Once you're sure all of these things are right, then try quilting again on a scrap sandwich. If the loops persist, switch your entire machine back to regular piecing and check it. If the loops are STILL happening, your machine needs to be serviced.

a FYI, I have used the clear foot for years to piece, I have the tiny metal extension for guiding the fabric, it is super for making sure that fabric doesn't slide to the right of the foot, I also add a dbl thickness of painters tape to the machine to guide the fabric along for longer piecing such as log cabin and borders. Hi Leah,

I'm a huge fan of your work. I too love this machine; have owned for 7 mo. and agree with you! Traded in my Viking for it. 2 questions: What is the number of the clear piecing foot? Also curious about why you feel that it is not good to lower machine speed. Does it harm the machine to stitch at lower speeds? Reason I ask is that I usually FMQ with the speed set at about medium because I seem to have better control if that is top speed and the stitch quality is always gorgeous! Thx!

@glpcw - The speed thing is personal, but the biggest reason I stress it in my video is because many beginners in my classes will turn the speed of their machine down very low and literally plod along. It helps to have the full range of speeds accessible in your foot pedal, just like you use the full range of speeds in your car, to help you speed up and slow down as the quilting design allows. Just my opinion though!

Wow, $3,0000, phew! Maybe you can get a price break with a trade in and with a trade show special or something like that.  I think the Bernina equivalent would be around $5,000.00.

@MsKathy07 - I believe the Bernina equivalent would be the new 820 which costs around $7000 - $8000, which in my opinion is not the price of a new sewing machine, that's the price of a used car! At least the 820 is cheaper than the 830 which costs around $11,000!

Loved this tutorial, I also have a Horizon, but haven't tried FMQ yet.

Curious- the other machine you are looking at, is that the Janome HD 3000?

Thanks so much for taking the time to do this video. I've had my Horizon for about 5 months now and I agree with absolutely everything you've said. I just love the machine -- and I use it intensively for garment construction, art quilting, free motion work, etc.
