Lang Lang actually isn't all that good. He plays the music the way that he wants to instead of the way the piece is written. I personally like Arturo Michelangeli's version much better.
Far out people!. Lang Lang is a Pianist and its all about Listening to him play Not to Look at his Expressions! You People Don't got the guts to do Expressions on the front of the Camera!
@EricVelasco13 I'm afraid you need to learn a few things about musicianship. There is no way you can substitute real playing and emotion by facial expressions. Exaggerated faces distract live audience, ESPECIALLY when the faces made don't connect with the music at all and are just there to look "cool" and "emotional". It's plastic and fake.
I think Lang had made effort to control himself to suit the orchestra, not too show off his expressive piano skill. If you compare with his solo Chopin Op.22 , you will see how "expressive" he can play
Are some of you seriously frowning upon Lang Lang for making facial expressions? Are you kidding me? I'm a pianist and I make facial expressions constantly while I'm playing. (It does not affect my technique, but perhaps enhances it) It's called "feeling the music", it's an uncontrollable feeling that comes from within. I don't believe making facial expressions ruins it at all, it makes it a little more interesting, if nothing else, and a lot easier to get into the personality of the pianist.
Actually, facial expressions actually DO affect your technique. When you do facial expressions, your shoulders will get more tense, which leads to more tense hands, not relaxed hands.
People need to learn to appreciate Lang Lang for his talent and virtuosity. Sure I would rather listen to Yundi, Gyorgy, etc. but I give Lang Lang the respect he deserves. Stop acting like you all know the "right" way to interpret and play such pieces.
Wow, just looking at these comments, I'm wondering, "What do people want from this guy?" If you like Yundi Li, go listen to him, he's great. Gosh, I bet if this audio file was put onto a video that was titled "Horowitz plays...", MOST, not all, but MOST would be commenting on how beautiful he played it and how it was sublime blah blah blah. Nothing against Horowitz =D
When I hear this played I am awed by the Pianists' who play it and I am also struck by the beauty and genius of this composition and of the brilliance of the man, Chopin. It is absolutely one of the most beautiful and moving pieces of music ever composed! Where are our Chopin's and Lizst's and Beethoven's and Mozart's? Will we ever have these kinds of composers again? Are they immortal because of their music?
everybody are stupids! he play very good. chopin is the best pianist in the world and everybody don´t know it. i am pianist and one day i am going to play shopan´s music. and i am going to be better than chopin, i promise.
Well he certainly hasn't captured the 'zal' which is so essential in Chopin's music. Come on I think most of you have to be listening more intelligently...
@Alpmaster13 but if you look in other point of view, you dont have to see the video, its just ok listening it, and the piece is good. If you prefer to see it, you have all the right to say that is terrible, and truly it was.
Like or leave people! For all the other interpretations there are other pianists. This is Lang Lang and this is his interpretation. The one and only universal way to play a piece doesn't exist and is rather (a) personal (experience).
Hendrix is rock. Chopin is classical. People play classical pieces enjoying it their own way. But to overdo it with a classical piece is kinda fake. Like how much orgasm can you get from a boring piece? (comparing it to Hendrix) it's like performing surgery with an orgasmic face.. Kinda disrespectful :/
Leave the man alone. God... all because of his faces? (personally, I think that's great. they don't seem faked at all) Just listen him playing. Because he actually plays INCREDIBLE.
he's got great skill, probably the best finger skill in da world to this date.. but however, completely lacking of souls or understanding of this piece of work is a MAJOR set-off, btw why does he have to fake up faces? That looks so weird and so disgusting.
Yundi Li's playing was great for this piece especially his playing in 14th International Chopin competition in 2000. His playing there made me start to love Chopin
Also the playing at the end of "the Pianist" was great too. I applauded at the end with audience. Does anyone know who played it?

personally i prefer yudi li. i think he is a really artist. but for me lang lang is only a business show guy who wants always to do something new and different from other pianists. he is playing music without composer's spirit, but only his own business-show character! schade eigentlich....
@darrenabcd1 DARREN when you can play as good as this dude, you can be the critic. until then... facial expressions are the passion of how he plays... and his ability to play this opus is over the top... i am a black sabbath, led zep, deep purple and so forth and so on listeninig kinda guy. but even being the dullard that i am, I know when a true musician is playing..
How elegant, beautiful and effortless....Lang Lang is a very unique genius. It is a pleasure to watch him play. No wonder he's the most sought after pianist in the world.
