  • I cried when I first heard this. Our son has Austism and I can relate to the sentiments of this song.

  • truth in the form of a song......splendid...and who better to sing it.......Sinead has such balls....she is great

  • Sinead i hope you read these comments when times get rough..you have no idea how much your version of this song has helped me through a personal struggle..I cry everytime a hear it !! You my darling are a true artist with an amazing gift..i love you more for the fact you never sold out x

  • Hi, I don't mind you asking. Nothing has changed with our son. Life goes on and so,very, very miserable. I wish I could help him so much but he is proud and defiant. Or maybe insecure. He won't talk but I get a lot of verbal abuse from him. And there is more concerning people on the outside, like the stores and people he used to be friends but I can't write it all on here.If you want to write to BonnieNaaz@gmail feel free . I will always reply.

helpful to have one who cares. Thank you.

  • 265,000 views? That's it? :'(

  • I have a son both physically and mentaly challanged but I can't say anymore or I would break down and he is with us. He is almost 52 , a life nearly lost. We were so young and did what we could but he couldn't co-operate with us and mental health. I worry so much what will happen to him when we are gone. And I am allways afraid for him and the future. He is like that little boy Sinead and others sing about. I hope it is different these days...that parents are wiser and can & will get help.

  • @beehive41 how is your situation now. do you mind me asking?

  • Thank you Jake, you are wright. -Its not Sineads song originally.. But its her version came along my way when I really needed it, and still its her version that truly touches my heart. Every time. But thanx! Good to know who really wrote it.

  • Touches me so deeply because of my work with the disabled.Sinead finds a way to reach every part of my heart.

  • No song has ever touched me morethan this one. Its as if she wrote it about my beloved son. It still makes my heart shiver. Thank you Sinead!!

  • @MissPetronelle She didnt write it, it was first covered by Luke Kelly whos version is better than hers. It was written by Phil Coulter who had a son who has down syndrome.

  • @Jake14451 i beg to differ..Luke Kelly's version was great but Sinead captures the essence of this great song like nobody else..its about difference and a mother who cannot accept/deal with a child who is different..Sinead lives thios song..its haunting and i did shed a tear the first time i heard her version !!

  • Would have loved to hear the live version.

  • @bowiesaid do a youtube search for luke kelly.

  • She has a great voice : )

  • I played this song and cried. Our son has Autism and this really touched a chord.

    Beautiful.

  • 2 best n talented females. ive ever met . deffo,, skinheed oconnor n siobhon fahae.. sorry bout spelln .. luv u long time..

  • this song touched me when i needed it, and has again tonight. thankyou

  • Through the tears in my eyes i see brilliance, and my ears are sharpened to the sound of mind tingling excellence.

    Simply beautiful.

  • great..

  • the most beautiful words i think i have ever seen. i have a son with down syndrome and these words are much like my emotions when he was diagnosed. he was born with a heart defect that was repaired twice and i feared losing him. he is four now and doing well. i am so glad i came across this beautiful song. i have listened to it so many times today. i truly love it and feel it so deeply.

  • written by phil coultar (the only man outside the u.s. to write a hit single for elvis, "my boy") about his authestic child. although this is a very good version no one sings it like luke "the legend " kelly

  • I don't understand how people caqn compare Sinead O'Connor withLuke Kelly.

They are completely different artists. Kelly sings with anguish and dispair for a situation he cannot understand or change. O'Connor sings as a mother who knows that no matter what she will love her child but is distraught by the treatment of the child by those who don't understand.

  • "Scorn not his Simplicity" is written by the Irish musician and songwriter Phil Coulter

  • "Scorn not his Simplicity" is written by the Irish musician and songwriter Phil Coulter

  • my 1 year old brother had cerebral palsy and he sadly died :( and luke kelly sang dis at his funeral so i have always loved this song! but this version is something special it moved me beyond believe when i first heard it

  • she seems like a mystery but sinister rs

  • One of my favourite songs by this amazing singer !

Beautiful tribute to the vulnerable and different.

(But then again, there are so many great songs by her).

    :-)

  • ye but , she aint ever gona be luke kelly .... even tho she is fucking gorgiouse , i'll forgive her that

  • @ivehadit1 true that kid, luke is the man..... from cork !!!!

  • beautiful and a trueful song it says alot and has a nice tune.

she has a lovely voice and i loved it

  • beautiful

  • Very nice. The song says a lot.

  • ubi caritas et amor .... deus ibi est! exquisite

  • Typical of Sinead----such touching compassion, and the voice of an angel. The slide show is great-thanks.

  • good singer

  • Superb....................................

  • Crying-thank you for that post!

  • beautifully sung and while I do think Luke Kelly is the master ,Sinead sings this with a female hurt unlike Luke

  • love it

  • Love Sinead, pretty good attempt and as always she is true to the song.

OK Luke's version is better but how many people are only hearing his version now thanks to her.

  • Por onde ela anda, estou com saudades dela.

  • i cry everytime i play this song...so sad.

  • wow, very good song. Sinead is such an awesome, soulful singer. So much soul in those songs of hers. I never get tired of hearing them.

  • Same age as her. She is so beautiful even the older pic of her. It makes me sad though b/c it reminds me that we are all getting older. I hope younger people can appreciate her music. She is pure and does not demand attention unlike Spears, Lady Gaga, etc etc.

  • I love this song.. especailly as a recording artist myself. Kenny Nash here DESIRE youtube Kenny Nash

  • Really love this vid. Beautiful song.

  • your all women commenting there, sorry i checked this out just to see, but sir luke wins hands down, she has the most beautiful voice though

  • made me cry

  • nice. but nothing on luke kelly

  • @MrFitzer90 indeed. nothing like Luke. But impressive just the same. Jusst like Luke she feels wat she is singing in this song I think.

  • @lytsepieter I AGREE 100%

  • I love this song with all my heart. We played it at the funural from my daughter. Her voice is like from an angel. Thank you for uploading this song!

  • sad but beautiful

  • very angelic voice -sinead is blessed...and now she has 4 wonderful kids..to take care and love her...she is really an angel who brought us Nothing Compares 2 U...such a beautiful woman inside ... and out---shaved head lady rocks!!!!!

  • I have to say, I love Both Sinead O' Conor's and Luke Kelly's version, For very different reasons, I find Luke's more earthy with the raw Irish talent that only ballad singers have. Sinead has a beautiful angelic voice. They both have done justice to this to this heartbreaking song. There is no camparision, and it's not a competition.

  • not even close

  • Love this....thank you very much...

  • yes, merci j'adore you're the best sinead!

  • Thanks for add... nice work

    good pictures, great song

  • her version is much better than luke's, imao. her voice is so beutiful <3 and the piano really andds something to the song i think.

  • Shouldn't have re-recorded it, Luke's version is the best... She's a gorgeous singer though

  • so very beautiful

  • wow, luke version is much better, but sinead has a beautiful voice. i must say this is a great version. anyone know the origins of this song, i know Phil Coulter wrote it, but im not sure if its about his own child

  • it is, his little boy had down syndrome =[

  • What a babe. A perfect song for her and a perfect excution. I love you Sinead.

  • The Irish Rock when It comes down to Music! Just fact!

Note: (Keep em away from the wisky)

  • you need to brush up on your repartees

  • good point!!

  • Sinead is a genius and a beatiful soul.

  • was just listening to luke kelly singing this the sinead i never heard her singing it before but i have to say i rather luke singing dont know if its hes voice or what but it gets me everytime

  • Luke Kelly is way better doing this song but i wana cover it myself and it is a shit hard song to sing for females n Sineads version should be appreciated for that reason - i dont know if i can sing that high ha ha

  • My brother has cerebral palsy. This song made me cry.

  • Come one, she is not better than Luke Kelly. Better looking of course.

  • The problem with Luke was that he was so good, probably the greatest balladeer in our history.all his versions of songs are pretty much the definitive variety,a massive case of 'follow that' you might say. That said,Sinead should have parked this one.Luke was better looking too,the folicle thing I think.Enjoy them both,Peace to you.

  • never a big fan of shin but fucking love this

  • I agree with "catdoomikie", Sinead really does justice to this song, gets me every time!

  • two great singers...one great song..as for who sings it better..i think luke kelly only because i heard him sing it 1st..tanx for postin it..

  • I have a boy whith aspergers. He is taken into costety. Love you sieaned. Sorrry by my bad english

  • 3 of my 4 children are challenged and so am I thanks for this great rendition Sinéad.

  • She really has a beautiful voice. A lovely version of a lovely song. Easily up there with the Luke Kelly version.

  • I did'nt think luke Kellys verson could be beaten,it has now.

  • this singer - that singer - it doesn't matter who the 'best' singer is - if the song moves you then the singer has done justice to the song.

  • I respectfully disagree with purists of this song that this version is inferior. I normally am not for lush interpretations of stoic classics. Case in point: the atrocities that have been committed against Cohen's Hallelujah. Yet, this performance slays me. Don't get me wrong, I love the original, but her voice and style are so sacrosanct. A great performance in my humble view.

  • the only people on this earth that should be aloud to sing that song are Phil Coulter and Luke Kelly. This she doesnt do it any justice at all

  • I agree!!!

  • why did this post get -6? i fully agree

  • because people like to jump on the bandwagon

  • WHAT a voice! I love anything she does.

  • Luke Kelly SHOULD hav been the only 1 to sing this

  • Pity he was't the first one to sing it.

  • It was writtin by Phil 4 luke t sing..???

  • a hymn to the the plight of people with disabilities

  • @ranchoboyeros yes you are right !!! we are all the same in God's eyes

  • unfortunately this song comes too late for my own child. god bless you, whereever you are! Yours ....daddy. I love you!!

  • wayy too depressing in comparison to original.

  • cant beat luke kellys version

  • sorry lads/ladies i think luke kelly is the best at it.

  • Sinead O' Connor = Voice & face of an angel..

This song gets to me everytime, so touching!!

And I agree with Coronachilla, It is better sung by a female- And I can't think of any other lady who could possibly sing this better then Sinead herself.. Great =)

  • phil coulter wrote this

  • I adore this version. Brings a tear to my eye every time I hear it. Being a father makes it all the more touching.

  • Love this song...it's a great CD as well...H.

  • thank you

  • Terrible, whiney? If ya dont like it, ya dont! Whats one mans poison etc, etc, of course everybody has their favourites. One of my favourites is anyone who has a heart the good stuff still rings true aw well you may not agree with that, but!!! Sinead, bless you, I like you!

  • what my ears are forced to hear!!! you're saying an unbearable thing!I think nothingcompares2U is obviously better by Sinéad!!! She's full of passion!!Nothing compares2Sinéad O'Connor!

  • U sing it then-i think sinead o'connor is a fruit and nut job but this is quite beautiful actually

  • i like this version best, just because if you listen close to the lyrics it makes more sense a female singing it. Like the line where it says how she cried tears of happiness when the doctor said it was a boy, the nshe cries tears of helplessness and thinks of all the things he cant enjoy. To me that is best sanng by a women despite it was written by a male(i am a straight male lol). I also like the piano solo because it sounds simple just like the little simple boy :'(

  • Very nice. But I rather Luke sining it

  • although its a luke kelly song its actually more appropriately sung by a woman

  • Apart from luke this is the best.

  • Voice is a miracle. Awesome, excellent uber-artist!

  • 5 stars

  • Scorn not You haven't been listening!

God bless her She is a gift from god to all!.you too are gods great work!

  • whatever her views she is the only artist to have the talent and voice to do this song like it should be sung.besides luke kelly

  • J'adore ce texte tout en délicatesse et plein d'amour... Fantastique Sinéad.

  • Pure class Sinead.

  • Fanstastic, whatever people have to say about her, she is truly talented. A wonderful song written by Phil Coulter. Truly beautiful.

  • sinead has a right to her opinion as you have to yours but her music is beautiful in my opinion

  • Marcus Garvy? Whats that some comic relief? Garvy said white folk came from apes! lol

  • luke kelly sings this song so much better

  • Is this Phil Coulter's song?

  • Yup, he wrote it about his own son, firstly performed by Luke Kelly, I think.

  • and many think only luke kelly had any right to sing this song

  • Sinead and Luke have created two beautiful version of a wonderful but sad song.

  • I agree so much with your comment. Yes, these two versions are eacha beautiful version of a sad song. When you know parents and children in this situation the song is especialy poignant, and all the more when sung with such feeling as Sinead and Luke Kelly sing it. Peace to you.

  • when I first heard this, I was sobbing, b/c it reminded me of my 1st cousin who left us recently. He was very shy. He died @ an early age, but still very shy and innocent- his Mother was very close 2 him in her shy way. My other cousin's baby boy was born w/ a rare condition - we almost lost him about a week after he was born until a priest came to the hospital then he started breathing again, etc. we still have him w/ us, but he's brain damaged + my cousin takes such good care of him night/day.

  • She just sings.

Luke, on the other hand, tells a story that touches our hearts and makes us think of how lucky we are that we are, colds and flus included, very healthy.

  • Luke knew the child this song was written about (and the person who wrote the song for that matter).

Apprently, he only sang it live once, because it upset him.

  • He did sing it more often, though very rarely since he felt it was a special song

  • would you please send me the photo from 0:48-1:00, with marcus garvey on her shirt?

  • An absolutely fabulous song performed with such emotion . Combination of lyrics and Sinead's voice is a perfect match. She is brilliant

  • Molto romantico!!! Very Romantic.

  • its a beautiful song regardless who sings it... well done sinead and rip luke... and the rest of you begruders can feck off!!!

  • I stumbled on this song, cried ,saw your comment and agreed with all you said

  • beautiful version of a fine song.

  • beautiful song, beautiful singer. to criticise

this version is to criticise music.

  • I'm not a fan of hers in the least, but I love how she has expressed this song, with a gentle touch and a reverence, precisely how it should be treated and protrayed.I'm impressed

  • luke believes in the material, but not o'coonor fails it.

  • Thanks for explaining.LOL

  • no problem. It's good to find such understanding people instead of those who just bully and tease because of differences. have a nice day!

  • Is this song about autisum or something, it's so beautiful I'm crying.LOL

  • It was written by Phil Coulter about his son who has Down's Syndrome. Hence the line "he looks almost like the others yet they know he's not the same." People with Down's Syndrome usually have slight differences in their physical appearance such as their face. I love this song as I teach swimming to children and adults with special needs and my brother has Down's Syndrome and they brighten up my world. It's great to have a song written specially for them.

  • i feel i have to post something, just dont know what, your posts touch the heart, someone else whom this song and coulters reasons touch

  • Gender aside, Luke or Sinead the lyrics are the key, from a father about the perspective of the mother.

    Phil ... well done

  • I've never heard the Luke Kelly version, perhaps I'm missing out, but I think she does this song beautifully.

  • A horrible rendition. She sounds too sanctimonious.

  • Phil Coulter's first son was born with Down syndrome, several months later he wrote the song Scorn not his Simplicity about his experiences with his son's disorder. He first played the song to Luke Kelly. Because of the personal essence of the song Luke Kelly felt that the song should not be sung except for special occasions, and not on every performance. This is a lovely versionn but I think Luke Kelly captured it.

  • love for the Lord thy God is the greatest concept of simplicity man can know. understanding that we are small and weak seems more noticeable in small children than adults who know everything there is to know about everything. Jesus was simple, henry david thoreau was simple. love is the most powerful vibration.

  • That's not what the song was written about, but it is an interesting interpretation of the lryics.

  • What I meant, was that we should be lucky that we were born healthy. Many people complain they have aches and whatnot, but that is nothing compared next to such horrible conditions such as autism.

  • You asshole the kid had down syndrome

  • With all due respect, I am not an asshole.

  • yeah I got carried away with that comment lol

  • you filthy pig. Maybe you don`t understand that comment. The beautiful song rings hollow when sung by someone who advocates for abortion using handicapped children as a good reason to have one.

  • how am I a filthy pig? euroman32589 made the comment

  • it seems like she is singing about me

I wish she was my mother ,my own mother didn't understand me at all

Proeple always said stupid things about me...

I do understand that abuse is hard to understand ,when i think of my mom i wich she would hold me thats all i really wanted

    Just love

But she is dead and nobody gives a damn and neither do i.

  • Agony Aunt - let Luke do this without the Agony and self pity but with dignity and respect for the song and its meaning.

  • paddy reillys version is great

  • Totally agree with mbrownn. I'm not comparing their voices, but Luke seems to be doing it with much more respect.

  • Sorry, only Luke Kelly could bring it as it should've been brought.

  • this is her sotry ......I think

  • great words. "He won't ask for your pity or your sympathy, but surely you should care."
