@shorttrini2002 i also have had the album since it was out in 83.. joe pizzulo is the vocalist. sembello does backing vocals. watch sergio videos with pizzulo as the vocalist. he also did lead on Alibis.. watch the vid for Alibis and you'll know
I've been searching for almost 30 years for this song and did not know the name of this song or even the person that sung it... typed in what lyrics I remembered and walla-presto Sergio Mendes - Rainbow's End leads me right to this place where I've heard it for the first time since the early 80's!!!:) Thank you so much for posting it! ^5
I'm going to cover this track, I saw Sergio in concert when he came to Brisbane, He's soooo good live! Awesome presence, I had a fantastic evening, So if you haven't been to one of his concerts your missing out on an incredible opportunity to throw your cares to the wind for a few hours.
1983: Atari video games, Commodore home computers, The Police album "Synchronicity", Naked Eyes' big hit "Always something there to remind me", and Sergio Mendes. Those were the days! : )
Amazing!!! I've been looking for this song for over 20 years! did'nt know the name or artist, just happaen to come acrossit. thanks, for bringing back my long lost memories!
Omg, i fell out of my chair when i heard this classic jam... cried due to the memories that passed through my head while falling down. Man where did the time go, miss back in the day so much. Music& life was so rare & special, not as much stress. Thanks for the post.. i will share with other friends also.
Drvinne, bless you for posting this major favorite of mine from the '80s. I had this LP and the Sembello family was a major force on it. I think they co-wrote this tune? Can't remember. Even now, this song still makes me cry. Thanks again.
Leczorn, if by "hook" you mean the syncopation of the instruments - man, that is the mother of all HOOKS!!!! What genius minds think of these kinds of musical movements?!!! Wow!
I believe that the lead vocalist is Joe Pizzulo, who is also on "Never Gonna Let You Go" and "Alibis." I remember the late WKJJ in Louisvlle, Kentucky played "Rainbow's End" for a few months and I absolutely loved it. Just the kind of infectious hook that I miss and try to re-create! I wish Sergio had stayed longer with this style!
Sergio Mendes was really onto something with this ENTIRE LP/CD..musically..lyrically and cut glass..rich production! Pop it in and listen the next time you fly! A favorite it is and will remain.
I LOVE THIS SONG... 1983..a junior in H.S. in Chicago...16 and hopelessly in love with love...i still have this Album. Serigo was eating a red pepper. WHY CAN'T I FIND THIS ON CD?
@chitown37cat The same story... 1983, Preparatoria (H.S.) (Guadalajara, Jalisco, México)...16. And the same question: WHY CAN'T I FIND THIS SONG ON CD?
I heard this song the first time in a radio station called 104.1 Jazz fm back in Mexico City in the early 80s where I used to lived I also love to hear this radio station day & night thats where I learned all the things I know about Jazz thanks to a guys who broadcasted such a nice type of JAZZ. Thank you Roberto Morales
Great song! I remember hearing this from time to time on WTHQ (Now Sunny 101.5) in South Bend, back in the late summer of 1983. Sergio Mendes had several underrated hits in the mid-80s and this was indeed one of them. I also remember "Alibis" and "Real Life", both from 1984. Those are two lost gems.
I was working at Stereo 100 (100.3 FM) in Marquette when this song came out. Suddenly, I'm transported back there making $2.60 an hour on weekends. Those days are long gone. Now I'm up to $2.70 after taxes.
@RochesterCycling LMAO! I was about to write the "holy crap" comment until I saw you beat me to it. Wow, forgot about this song, and I remember a lot of 80's songs. Time machine indeed!
@RochesterCycling - LOL!! Good ol' AM radio! I used to love this song, too. I dated a guy who worked at our local radio station and you outearned him by about 50-cents an hour!!
I really love this song!, I remember my first flight to the other country and this is one of the songs that i listen to while relaxing, i always remember that time every time i listen to this song :)
This is also one of my favorite Sergio Mendes songs after "Alibis"... Joe Pizzulo's powerful voice really make those 2 songs better...

As for the comments on the syncopated hook, it's very Bacharach-esq.

This is when the radio stations actually played stuff like this, it was considered mainstream. When MTV came to NYC, everything changed.
