You can train a dog to do just about anything.

I trained my 10 year old german shepard to count. He would only cookies but still he would bark out how many cookies there were. Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks? Nobody thats who lololol

I'd assume it makes them comfortable when they have to leave the house, such as to go to the vet or park, or barber. It would probably make them get used to being around other people as well, so they don't over-react when they see a new person.

Why aren't BC's used for assistance? Well, I have worked with an organization that trains these dogs, and BC's aren't used because they aren't large enough to pull wheelchairs, and they are more likely to bond with one person. This is a disadvantage, because these dogs are traded among several handlers during their training. That's the only reason. BTW, Golden retrievers are number 4 on the intelligence list.
