Love this song. The Clash got to their period of living in NYC, playing live on Broadway every night, writing and recording Sandinista, and became the only punkers prior to the Beastie Boys to actually like rap/ hip-hop and have the cojones to try to do it.
@GAK62 I saw Clash at their very last shows at Hollywood Palladium in L.A. I think in Nov. 1982. Best live concert I've ever experienced in my life--and I've been to a lot of great-great ones. But the Clash at the Palladium was IT. Most wild but non- injurious mosh-pit I've ever negotiated.
Its amazing how many people are viewing The Clash video's still today proving what all of us original Clash fans knew, there music is timeless, pure genius!
the clash were a punk band in essence and certainly in philosophy, but they transcended genre. they took influences from so many different styles of music that they crafted a unique sound that defies any description other than "completely fucking brilliant".
So much new Rock, R&B, whatever..., just cannot touch the way these guys blended so many unique genres of music into pure Punk Rock. Most of today's music (Hip Hop, R&B, Rock, Alternative Rock...(yeah, right, alternative to what???) is totally segregated and watered down. There is no true fusion of different types of music...sometimes, I truly feel that culturally and socially, music and the human race has taken 5 steps backward, instead of forward...Terribly sad.....
Looks like a show from the Combat rock tour 1982. I saw hem at the Spectrum in Philadelphia probably late August. They looked pretty much the same. Arena Looks similar. Could be...
@lupatello This is the three-day US Festival 83 headlined by the Clash, Van Halen and David Bowie. This is the night when some members of the Clash' entourage got into an altercation with concert organizers and the band nearly canceled the show but ended up playing much later that night. I was there-- the beginning of a premature end for the greatest rock band of all time. What a night it was!
watch the Tom Synder show version - works for me. How can anyone mention Green Day on here? They have nothing on them becasue they arent punk, uptempo boy band GD!
that's quite a claim (not that topper wrote it, but that strummer told you this.) but there's no doubt topper was a good if not great songwriter in his own right. exhibit a: rock the casbah.
Of one thing I am sure: If humans are still here in 500 years they will be listening to Louis Armstrong, Billie Holliday, Hank Williams, Jimi Hendrix and the Clash. Music may be the 20th century's great legacy.
That's a pretty freakin' good list. Tempted to throw in Bob Marley, James Brown, Muddy Waters, Coltrane and Little Richard, though. I think human civilization kind of hit a plateau after Little Richard. Then fucked off entirely after the Clash. Woe.
Mick is really giving that guitar hell in this version. Miss Topper though. Can't have everything.
Bass line...Drum beat...lead'n rythmn guitar...Nothing to waste...One of the best band and influancing band of the century...Ring ring 7 am ...move yourself...
I used to hear a song on the radio sometimes from the Clash that sounded very Motown-ish, where Joe was singing with a group of kids. Anyone know which song I'm talking about? I haven't heard it in decades but I would love to hear it again.
Love this version to bits as well as the one on San! Joe was so intelligent ad passionate, and he's very hot here too hehe ... the lyrics are brilliant. And the sound is great as always! Rest in peace joe, R.I.P. The Last Gang In Town

Let's keep things in perspective. They railed against the likes of Pink Floyd, Stones, groups that filled arenas. Then, if memory serves me right, they refused to play the US Festival unless they were paid the most money. Ahhh, capitalism at its best. I love it.
"But the gist of it was that the Clash were upset when they heard that Van Halen took a million dollars to headline the third and final night of the festival. The Clash, by contrast, refused to go on stage until US Festival organizer Steve Wozniak (of Apple Computer) agreed to donate a large sum of money to charity"
I like how you copied and pasted the same message into two and possibly more videos. Caught you in the other magnificent seven vid. That's real classy; at least think of something else to say.
