Funny story: Theres a local rapper from these parts who quotes the piano part in one of his songs. When I heard the original in class my ears perked up immediately "Holy Crap, that's Passion's Masochist, from Omni" and it's part of a larger piece of work called "A poets Love" (After translation) I thought it was fitting considering the rapper did a superb job of living up to the original title. You probably won't be able to find the track, but I hope you think it's a cool notion at least.
Thanks for all of your comments! I mostly put it up so I wouldn't have to carry a CD or pod with me all the time to listen to it. :) I'm glad you all enjoy it!
Somewhat false. This song is part of a 16 song cycle Dichterliebe, this song leads into Aus meinen Tranen spriessen. So leaving off on the dominant isn't solely to leave the feeling of unreturned love, but it transitions into the second song.
When I last posted, I commented on the key of the piece being altered.
Little did I know, the recording I owned was a transposed version. I was young in my music studies and did not realize that art songs are frequently transposed.
Now, I am studying the Norton Anthology. This is the exact recording. I apologize for my ignorance! Beautiful piece.
It's from the Norton Anthology, Vol. II. Directly from it, it's not tampered with and the key hasn't changed. I just couldn't resist putting it on youtube because of it's incredible beauty. I love it.
@orangepink22 We use those in our music history sequence! :D This was one of my favorites. I assume you also have the Burkholder "A History of Western Music?"
@orangepink22 who sang it on that one? the voice seems familiar. The Norton Anthology Vol. 1, I have cuz of my major, some I don't like but it does have a lot of good music. perhaps I'll have to get the second volume as well! but yeah, who sang this one?
@orangepink22 hmmmmmm....yeah, I'll probably end up having to buy that within the next couple of semesters! It sounds very beautiful, I'm definitely going to enjoy this :)
Somehow, the pitch is incorrect. It may have happened when the video transferred, or someone tampered with it, because this recording is quite lower in pitch than I remember it. I'm positive.
A melody I'd love to listen to at the end of the world with a glass of wine.

The composer left us in the dominant key to emphasize the feeling of discomfort one feels for love that isn't shared.

@mattf3nDeR Nevertheless, it does have ambiguous tonality which reflects the text, in this case as a stand alone piece, it hints at unrequited love.

Nein, kein problem.
It's transposed. He's singing it in the middle key, not the high key. It's a perfectly valid performance.
