It was intended to make it easier to prosecute organized crime figures, but has been applied in several other cases as well.
For the life of me, I don't understand why ANY religion should have tax expemtion status. So you believe in Christianity or Study the Torrah... well thats fine ... but why should that mean it should be tax exempt? Scientology does NOT follow the rules set up by the IRS for tax exemption any ways. It should be revoked.
@dasboatbabe Simple, really. It's basically a reason that says "the constitiution says so" hence, the separation of church and state. that's why religions are tax free and are treated neutrality soforth.
Now to get religious cloaking out of the way...that's gonna be very tricky. $cientology basically has the IRS by its throat, and I find that quite frustrating.
@Pooglypuff There is no such statement as "separation of church and state" anywhere in the Constitution for the United States of America. The idea that that phrase appears anywhere in the Constitution is nothing but a myth.
@1GodOnlyOne Uhm. No, it does, I've read the letters.
Perhaps, it is irksome for you, but it has been implemented in various laws. Of course, assuming you have the power of the vote, you may of course, rally people to your cause, to reform the separation of church and state as you will.
Claiming to have read the letters is not an acceptable presentation of evidence.
It has not been implemented in any law, and it holds no authority because it does not appear in the Constitution, and it is more likely irksome for you, because you are the one who is incorrect about it, not me.
There is no "separation of church and state" in the United States of America to reform, as the phrase appears nowhere in the Constitution, and therefore holds absolutely no legal power or authority.
@1GodOnlyOne You're right of course, in that there is not a law defining what the seperation of church and state is. Rather, it is a constitutional amendment.
The phrase comes from a letter Thomas Jefferson wrote to the Danbury Baptists, in 1802, in which he referenced the first amendment, calling it a "wall of separation between church and state" (w w w . loc . gov/loc/lcib/9806/danpre . h t m l)
The separation, in America, is defined by the directive that congress shall .....
@1GodOnlyOne ....that congress shall make no "law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..." (U.S. Const. amend. I sec. 1)

@dasboatbabe There are son many cults and churches set up as simple tax shelters to prevent paying taxes...laundering of money etc.

@1GodOnlyOne The phrase doesn't actually appear in the constitution, but rather in letters written by the founding fathers.

@pjnlsn It may, or it may not. In either case, the phrase holds absolutely no legal power or authority, as it does not appear in the Constitution.
