lol I love birds. when I went to florida there were a lot of those big white birds with the yellow beaks (they're all wild and hang out on the beach) and one flew up onto our porch and just hung out with us for mad long, sitting right next to us and loving all the attention we were giving him. when we went inside he would stare at us through the window and wait outside the door for us!
You people need to understand, this person lives in a different country and stop trying to force what you do in your country, down their throat! You don't just 'decide' to capture and keep a wild ENDANGERED animal because it's there! Yes, you can buy them in the states but that is VERY different! They're captive bred and importation of wild birds is not legal!
Clever little beggar. I loved watching the same sort of birds that I have as pets in the wild, and seeing how many of their behaviors are totally natural. Cockies are very demanding pets though, you need to be their flock or they get neurotic. We have three that are rescue birds from folks that couldn't take how needy they can be.
chengda85, yes i could that but it's illegal, and totally cruel to cage a wild bird/animal that's lived as a free being, cockatoos have a general lifespan of 70 years old and some up to 80 years old
I love these birds too Oz. Too bad you Aussies can't so easily keep one as your own. You can buy Cockatoos in the USA for about US$2000. But does the Australian govt let you citizens own these birds AT ALL?
My friends mum feeds some of the locals (Penrith NSW) in her back yard. One day she was late, so one of the cockies went through the doggy door into the kitchen and screamed at her! She is a well trained human and hasn't been late since.
We were in Australia for 3 months (Sydney area) and I fell in love with the cockatoos at the Royal Botanical Garden. Sigh....wanna go back. My girls loved those birds...such intelligent and funny creatures.
yes awesome creatures, somewhat noisy and greedy though lol, very desrtuctive bird too, farmers shoot Cockatoos each year because they destroy tens of thousands of dollars worth of crops annually
This is rather interesting, Oz. It's kind of a Catch-22. The wild 'toos are protected by your govt against capture, but farmers are permitted to shoot them in the need of protecting crops. Where do they set the balance at?
@ozlion1 Seems to me it would be a synergistic deal for the AUS government to allow people to have them as pets, instead of farmers killing them. That way the cockies are indoors with people. They do make great pets.
They do make great pets. But have you ever owned one? They are definitely not for everyone. Like a cat or a dog. These birds live upwards of 50 years or more. And they are demanding. Think of having a 2 year old for over 50 years. I've had mine for 13 years, and while shes the joy of my life, she definitely takes up a lot of time and patience. Taking them from the wild and sticking them with whoever thinks they're pretty seems like a bad idea to me.
@PixieStew I have an African Grey and a cockatiel and they do take up quite a bit of time, but there are five in our household to give the bird attention, so it spreads the load. Cockatoos are very noisy, which is the main challenge with them over other parrots. So no neighbors, or apartment birds. But if you're in the country, experienced with birds, then it can be a better fate than just shooting them to protect the farmers' crops. I love birds, especially the larger parrots.
That would explain it. I lived in Australia for a year. I lived about 200 miles from Melbourne in a little town called Sale. Beautiful country and lots of wild life. Cheers mate!!! No worries.
this cockatoo is not stealing, just playing

they're refered to as 'cockies' not 'toos' :)
the farmers shoot way less than people take as pets, or would if they were allowed to :)
plus we need to crops to eat and export, cockies destroy acres upon acres of cereal crops each cyear
ozlion1 3 years ago
no insult intended but in the States we call them "toos"
