when rotating the mark IV to portrait position either left or right, it will automatically adjust the selected focal point to the correct position chosen. no more have to readjust the focal point....about time.

nikon keeps making mistakes as of early 2008. too many bodies that are closely the same. for the price, the canon 1d mark IV at a launch price of 200 dollars less gives you twice as many USEFUL features. One thing Nikon does right that I wish Canon would adopt is the awesome high ISO limit feature. Finally with Canon's camera a must have feature is finally put to use.
Low quality pictures have been used in the past, yeah that's the past. I don't think media publication will accept a resolution lower that 8 megapixel coz many magazine publication is very picky now a days coz they want the best quality pictures to publish on their magazines and they care about other technical details like ISO and MP etc.
Dude that's just a coincidence coz at time when saddam got executed no media is allowed to get in the execution room coz if they did probably lots of high quality pictures had been taken and printed all over the world, heck they probably even make a billboard size for it.
Well, yeah. The point is that low quality pictures have been used in the past, and probably will be used in the near future. Professional photographers aren't always there, but several people have a camera in their cell phones, if they take a shot of an important event, well, who cares about the noise and other technical details.
99% of of people commenting here are just plain amateur kids dreaming to have a camera like this and giving comments they even have experience to hold any of the pro cameras. its pointless really.
I think no point making ISO up to 102,400 if you cant use it in real life shooting. I mean do you think magazines will accept to publish ones picture if its noise is as big as grain of rice, i dont think so.
Didnt you saw Saddam Hussein's picture before being executed published in almost every printed media in the world? That picture was taken with a cell phone with very low resolutions, lots of noise, and by no means, "technically" right. Sometimes, lots of times, whats in the picture is more important than any technical standard.
indead the amount of shots ive seen people (including myself) miss by fiddling with the camera. Get the shot! Stop faffing there isn't a dslr that's been out in the last 5 years that wont give you amazing photos let alone pro slrs.
People need to stop being lead by marketing and go out and use their cameras :)
That being said, i am buying one of these next year for good reasons viewfinder size (i manual focus) FX sensor (for less dof and using my glass) and iso performance.
Theres no point complaning Mark IV cant focus, you have no proof for that. Kodak is suffering from business loss bcoz no one buying nikon cameras.*shrug*
The low mpx count allows high iso sensibility. 12 mp is more than enough for standard newspaper/magazine activity. This camera is tought for photojournalism and photodocumentary. If you work demands big prints (fashion, product, etc), you should look for the d3x.
Kodak has reported that its business division that includes digital cameras suffered a 49% fall in sales (compared to the same period last year) in the third quarter of 2009. "Continued declines in consumer spending have had significant impacts in the company's digital camera and digital picture frame businesses," it said. The sales drop has primarily been due to a decline of approximately $157 million in intellectual property royalty revenues, the company said. (17:50 GMT)
Pointless having a fullframe if your a media and sports photographer your 300mm lens will still be 300mm and if your lens cant reach that far you crop. At only 12MP if you crop you loose detail in your pictures. where as 16mp if you crop you still have very good detail and your lens have more reach than full frame.
My comment above was only a response to Zanuha-San who IHO nobody needs any ISO higher than 6400. Obviously, Nikon made this camera for pro or non-pro who would love to shoot on low and dim light situations w/o the need of flash units. For those who don't need huge prints from the D3X, 5DMII or the Sony model, this new D3S is, without doubt, the best all around dslr camera to date. If only I had the means, I would not hesitate to have one of this to replace my D200 as my main work horse.
@ver3547 it's not all about dim light. sports photography needs very fast shutter speeds so the iso has to be high even in good lighting. if you use 6400 on d3s you'll have less noise than 6400 on other cameras.
I would sure love it if that could be done but technically it is very difficult. It is much easier to add pixels than lower noise because lower noise requires larger pixel photosites to gather more light.
The D3s will cause a lot of happy DX shooters to switch to FX for the low light performance. For most serious photographers, higher low noise ISO is much more important to IQ than more pixels which as 12mpx out resolves all but a few lenses.
but who's to say if you're ONLY gonna shoot during the day. one time or another, any photographer is bound to need to shoot in very low light conditions. better to have than not to have it when u need it...Nikon just gets better and better
Well, your opinion is wrong then, because there are times when I'd love a higher ISO than 6400. It's great for those of us who like to shoot without flash with a high shutter speed in dim lighting.
I can imagine this camera being used for nature, or events such as concerts or anything with available darkness and don't want to use flash. And in the D3, ISO 1600 performs just as good as ISO 200...I don't even wanna begin with the D3s...way to go Nikon.
You have missed the point, Nikon makes the best pro cameras for people who need the features only they provide and understand the tasks at hand. The 7D has nice features but it is not in the same league as the $5000 list price(will sell lower in 6 months or so if production ever catches up with demand.
A 7D is a consumer camera not intended for critical applications. It still suffers from marginal AF and noise.
If someone really needs hi-pixel count, the D3x is the one to get.
All I want to see is Nikon take their DX3 sensor and put it into a 700D level camera like Canon did with the 5Dmk II. As for the 7D being a consumer grade camera this is by price only. Many pro photographers who now what a great value the 7D will certainly not disapoint. The 7D is a fast camera, built to the level of Canons top line cameras and has 18.1 mp to boot.
As for the new D3S, the D700 and the D300 will give more bang for the buck.
You can't just use the UK price and convert it into US Dollars. The retail price in the US will be about $5,000 which is pretty much the same as the D3 was.
That 7D argument does not make much sense. You have to compare the D3s to the Canon 1D3 or whatever there is to come soon.
D-Movie is ALWAYS 720p @ 24fps. Pretty crappy. If I were going to get a pro I'd just get a D3. Save me 1.5k. Unless it gets discontinued I will not go with the D3s. The refinements are just to minutiae. My D300 serves me well but I prefer my older FujiFilm S3 Pro from early 2005.
oh no i meant photograph shutter speed, not movie.. hey but youre the rude guy from the other video on this, so i guess you see that this camera does have 102,400 iso, i wasnt making it up.. but yeah i have a d300 too, and not looking to upgrade as of now, maybe by the time i am this will drop in price..
Sorry if I was rude. I was trying to make a point and I was on a hurry because my laptop was about to die. The D3s is basically a D300s so if a D700s comes out I'd just save my money for that and get better lenses.
Ohh for sure thats what id do too, but im pretty sure the d700s is going to be aimed more for editorial photographers, which is why i said it would have a bump in pixels and probably value gradation, not iso and af speed and things like that, that they put on this sports photographers camera.. but yeah i know what youre saying
Not necessarily. But if the D3s does kill the D3 then I'd just get a D700 since I'm just a portrait photographer. Maybe I'll get a FujiFIlm S6 Pro if it ever comes out? Don't get me wrong, Nikon is THE BEST brand over canon. FujiFilm custom cameras are only good because of their F modes.
The way FujiFilm does it's cameras (which I'm sure you know of this) is they take a standard Nikon body and put in their own sensors, software, and firmware. With their special sensor they are able to achieve a way higher DR and better low light capabilities at ISO 200 than any camera I know of. All you really need is a super fast lens (The Nikkor 50mm ƒ/1.8D is only about $130) which can be very cheap. It's just that a lot of photographers are getting to lazy now and depend on auto.
I totally understand that but personally, I don't like the minutiae amount of noise even ISO 400 makes. I shoot an S3 Pro and D300 while these are not FX format cameras, have pretty decent ISO noise bypass. I usually like to shoot P, not AUTO ISO when in a hurry but I shoot M @ 1/60 Shutter / ƒ/1.8 Aperture with maybe some EV adjustments for compensation(For indoor using flash). FujiFilm *.RAF(On S3 Pro) isn't as good as *.NEF because it is very limited and primitive so I can't make refinements
I use a D300 to, best camera ive ever held so far i must say. Anyway as we know the D300 does not have a full auto mode and if that was what you was referring to then i agree those modes should be skipped and avoided, but P mode which is not fully auto i do use that quite a lot but for the most part i use S and A mode.
Yup! I use S in low light and set it to somewhere between 1/20-1/30 for Low Light and A in normal conditions when using smaller aperture lenses and I for my 50mm ƒ/1.8D I set it normally to about 1/30 Shutter and 1.8 Aperture. This lets me do A LOT when it comes to general photography. I usually don't deviate more that 5 stops on each setting.
yes having f/1.8 is probably enough but only for certain conditions. what if you are taking more than just one person standing together and we want them all nice and sharp without bokeh? then we'd need to bum up to f/4, and perhaps even f/8. but with higher ISO you can do that. not to mention zoom lens don't come at f/1.8 but the fastest is f/2.8 which are non fix lens. bottom line with high ISO in the D3s we can do more wad we tot impossible before in low light situations.
See this is really understandable. I am really not going against ISO, just not ISO 100,000. You can use ƒ/4 and a SB-800/900 and still get crisp results even at ISO 200, considering the fact that you know how to bounce the flash. The D3s is a great camera for it's time but I just don't feel it is worth it to buy it yet. Hell, if I had the money right here and right now and I had money for another camera right here and right now I'd get both cameras! TheD700s(?) and the Fuji S6 Pro(?)
Shooting outdoor or without ceilings to bounce light can only result in a flash with diffuser, and some events i shoot they do not allow flash photography. in these times its a better-to-have than not feature. but heck ya, we can't all buy the latest and greatest. But I would really love to see the D700s come out that has the features as the D3s.
I see where you're coming with that point. Yes, not all places allow flash and you WOULD need ISO, but not ISO 100k! Photographers, for decades have been able to bypass low light in other means than ISO. I've never shot FX but I do believe you would get clear images at ISO 500 where on DX you would have a crappy noisy picture. Nikon is an excellent brand but I really love my FujiFilm S3's shutter sound. It feels more artistic therefor I'm waiting on the S6 or something. Small details mean a lot.
Picking up one of these in a few days :-)

Photographers, for decades have been able to bypass low light in other means than ISO. I've never shot FX but I do believe you would get clear images at ISO 500 where on DX you would have a crappy noisy picture. Nikon is an excellent brand but I really love my FujiFilm S3's shutter sound. It feels more artistic therefor I'm waiting on the S6 or something. Small details mean a lot.
