Ristar is one of the best 16-bit games I've played, period. It's so unique, so totally original, and the puzzles are so intricately designed! It's like Ecco the Dolphin, but with good controls; Earthworm Jim, but with gameplay as satisfying as it is varied; Sonic, only much more methodical and slower-paced; and an obvious forerunner and possible inspiration for Rayman.

What? Ecco the Dolphin has FANTASTIC controls. It's hard as fuck, completely unfair, and very difficult to play well, but none of that has anything to do with the controls.

I got this game on the sega genesis collection for psp the christmas before last, and it's probably my favorite game. I really wish this would have been more popular than sonic...Though if it got popular it may have had a string of sequels, and im sure that it would go the path of sonic and sega would just see it as a cash-cow which they would exploit for money by slapping the title on a box and coming up with a half-assed story.

Also, the Sonic games are only about going through the levels as fast as you can if you want to do so. You can also take your time and explore all the different areas, which is actually what I like the most about Sonic.

I agree with you about enjoying this game more than Sonic if for no other reason than it seems like you can control him with a little more precision. However, I already feel bad for you for all the hate mail that you will surely get. @Doomdude50 I'm not sure if you were serious, but it's actually pronounced like "wrist-ar". The proof comes from the Japanese name リスター. If it were as you claim, it would be spelled ライスター.

I might also have some bad news for you about Ryu from Street Fighter...

Now I had both Ristar, and both sonic 1, 2, and knuckles back in the day, and while i perfectly see why people like Ristar more, i probably played moreso as the blue hedgehog if i remember right. probably the biggest reasonings, i like the game, all the way till puzzles get in the mix. =P but the mechanic is a great idea, and i'd love to see sega make a sonic 4-esque sequel to ristar, of course give it more polish than sonic 4 =D

I had a lot more fun with Ristar than the Sonic games. I found that Ristar was a lot more original, fun, and well crafted. The levels were a joy to play, the music was orgasmic, and the graphics were actually pretty good for the Genesis. They should make a new 2D platformer.

I can relate to Derek liking slow-paced platformers. I myself like slow-paced platformers better and probably wouldn't be too keen on Sonic the Hedgehog's gameplay. Give me Mario, Rayman, or Rister over Sonic any day. Though that doesn't mean I think Sonic the Hedgehog is a bad game.
