  • Great cave. I liked watching it come together. Thanks for sharing.

  • Thank you, regards, Pete

  • I am very new to knife painting, but i really liked this video and the result; i find this technique really spontaneous! and the thick texture the paint achieves is beautiful!

  • That is so helpful, thank you, will watch again and learn some more

    Pauline

  • Very good, very interesting for many people what and how you do.

  • Thank you for your kind comments, everyone is entitled to their opinion, like all art, like all things, you can't please everyone, I really appreciate the positive ones, all the best,

    Pete

ps. I won't delete the negative comments, I have more class than that!

  • obviously those people who are dissing your painting have no creativity and no imagination to see that that was obviously a landscape. they are so close minded to traditional ways of painting that they don't see the amazing thought process of your masterpiece. they think because it didn't take as long as others and wasn't as detailed that it still isn't a masterpiece. ignore the haterrss hahaha<3

  • its still a piece of shyt even if you delete my comments!!

  • ...that was terrible.. Ive seen art work and that was just childs play, im sorry but i dont see the landscape, and this painting is a piece of crap. Just like the disturbing paintings People paint that look like a 5 year old drawings, and snobby high brow people claim have some deep meaning to it, when in reality it doesnt and the "artist" is just fucking around with paint and claiming he had some deep revelation, and bam created that piece of shyt,

  • what about the usage of the oils? Because it seems you really need a lot for this techinque...just asking, wanna try something new, thx;)

  • love it. there is nothing more to say... because it's like wow!

  • SIMPLEMENTE GENIAL....... mil gracias por compartir. Comenzare a practicar, pero creo que se necesita algo mas que cuchillo y color....SER VISIONARIO del objetivo final

  • Excellent work!

  • Awesome!

  • This is awesome!

  • Why did you use your fingers to spread the paint instead of a brush?

  • @MsPlantBuddy

Hi, I used my fingers because it's easy to manipulate paint with them and there is a wonderful tactile feel to smooth wet paint, ask any child, cheers, Pete

  • I could almost feel my cold feet and smell the smell of an old, dark and scary cave (while also feeling the joy that I could see light, "almost out") as the painting progressed... Beautiful painting!

  • @LottaTroublemaker

    thank you, regards, Pete

  • i wish i could control a painting knife like you ......

  • @carolfans

Hi, It's only practice and more practice, that will give you the confidence you are looking for, regards, Pete

  • Wow! Amazing work. The colors that you achieve are stunning. This video makes me wish I could paint with a palette knife knife. Right now, I've only done limited work with brushes. Keep up the good work.

  • @celtcrazy

Hi, Thanks for the positive comments, regards, Pete

  • this is not as easy as it looks, creating abstract is harder than portraits.its imagination gone wild but i seem to lack it lol.i keep trying and failing..it ends up being black and i stab the canvas...any tips

  • @beyzasmum

Hi, Keep trying and you will feel the flat part of the blade sliding smoothly over the surface, if you feel any grating or roughness then you need to adjust the angle that you are using when holding the knife, I hope this helps, regards, Pete

  • Excellent knife work!

  • @anniejlemay

    Thank you, cheers, Pete

  • what is this u are showing us? Santa's sledge got blown up with a car-bomb, and now he is lying down there at the bottom in the snow dreaming of... what are those floating? Fish?? purple fish, is that right?!... hmm.... not bad. takes a little till u see it, but once u do its simply blows your mind!

    stunning work!

    cheers ... :))

  • Great knife work! I enjoy the contrast from the black underpainting, I use that a lot in my own paintings.

  • I wish I could paint that fast. I need to go to school and practice some speed painting. Great work!

  • Absolutely stunning! Wish I had vision like that!

  • You can, be patient and take note of your surroundings and also let music inspire you, it will happen, regards, Pete

  • super

  • Simply beautiful. I have to try that one day, although you probably make it look easier than it is.

  • pinky up! hehe

  • the reason the pinky is up is because I almost cut my finger off on a power saw when I was very young and the joint of the finger knitted through as it healed making my finger permanently stiff, regards, Pete

  • gosh.. anyway i enjoyed watchng your vid. the medium that your using is quite expensive for beginers like me.. hope i cud try it soon.. ^^

  • oooh, im so sorry. but that's not stopping you, i can see. Great job, i'm inspired by people like you.

  • Just beautiful!

  • nice work

  • That is amazing. At first I tried to figure out why paint a canvas completely BLACK? It all made sense after you finished the cave painting. Pretty neat.

  • Thanks Cr3ativity, The black part of the board becomes the shadow area as the work progresses, glad you like it, cheers, Pete

  • Pete - Thank you for sharing working with the knife with all of us - going to start immediately - loved Cohens music while you painted and there is a joy in your work that is felt - Best of luck to you

  • Hi artsy712, Thanks for the encouraging words, I am glad you like my work, all the best, Pete

  • Acrylic

  • Ii is Oil, -- luckeepeet

  • Hi Pete, Luv it and it's simplicity.

Do you mind if I use it as an excercise piece for our art club?

    What's your colour pallete.

    Thanks

  • Hi Dhoby Walla, Please be my guest, if you wish to use this as an excercise, the colours I used were - Titanium White, Yellow Ochre, Phtalo Blue, French Ultramarine Blue, regards, Pete

  • you are fabulous!!!!!

  • Fun video to watch! To honest though, I went "Noooooo!" when you did the final smear

  • This is really very cool ...would love to try but any idea is it on paper or black canvas????

  • Hi, The painting was on mdf board painted with flat black acrylic paint, you could do the same with canvas, hope this helps, cheers, luckeepeet

  • Your use of a knife is amazing. You make it look so easy and definately make your viewers want to try this technique. I'm new to working with acrylics, so I definately appreciate your video. Thank you!

  • Hi NolaGB Thanks for the nice words, it is simply practice and then more practice and it will work fine with acrylics, regards, Peter

  • i liked it finished at 1:24, where this thing hung in mid air and was minimalistic; i liked the darkness below it, it looked suspended in dark space

the end result -for my taste- was overdone

  • Your painting is exactly what I was looking for (style and tools). After many trials, finally I found the right tool (knife) to express something from deep inside. Now I need the technique.

What you put on your canvas is growing in my mind. Do you know where I could get high resolution jpg of similar kind of painting? I need to study samples.

Thank's a lot for uploading this inspiring video.

  • Hi artsski, Thanks for looking, as for high resolution jpg. you could try a google search or just use good clear photos as I do and change the image into an amazing knife painting, I don't try and copy I use the image for inspiration and let the painting develope that way, hope this helps, let me know how it goes, all the best, luckeepeet

  • very inspiring! A lot of the time I don't feel like cleaning brushes and all that noise, so now a days I just want to put on an Eric Dolphy CD and just break out the knife. You made me into a knifer for lifer.

  • Hi Hockey5745, Thanks for the comment, painting knives are sooooooooooooo! easy to clean to change colours, you can adjust your painting pace to suit the music and enjoy it, cheers, luckeepeet

  • Fascinating.

I'm kinda new on palette knife painting,

and just yesterday I accidentally found a book describing about it, and really got me into it. So I bought one home and tried it almost rightaway.

Gosh! It's so much harder than what it looks like...

Nice painting btw ;D *thumb up*

  • hi UsedDoor, thanks for the comment, keep trying, once you get more confidence you will be OK, regards, luckeepeet

  • Very interesting and helpful. I have a 7 year old who draws everyday w/o fail. This has sparked my interest once again in art. Since I know nothing about painting I would love any advice you could give me regarding good beginner resources in print or online. I like acrylic and oil on canvas and hard surfaces. I have never seen anyone actually use a paint knife until your video. I love it and thanks for your time.

  • hi, thanks for the comment, my advice regarding using a painting knife is to use it in a similar way to a table knife when you are applying spreads etc. everyone knows how to do that and then try variations on the technique, the rest is lots of practice, perserverence pays, all the best, luckeepeet

  • Good knife work. Which Leonard Cohen song did you originally use, if you don't mind my asking?

I sent you a video response of me painting in stop-action, stroke click stroke click style. I hope you look at it, and if you do, I hope you like it. I bet you're a hell of an art teacher.

  • Thanks for the nice comment, I used Leonard Cohen's "Everybody Knows" I played it while I was painting, my painting strokes were in time to the music, I watched your video and I like it a lot, regards, LUCKEEPEET

  • beautiful. I see so many images in this but I am not sure if they are there or if it is because I am viewing it from my computer screen. at any rate it is unbelievably beautiful and inspiring. thanks for sharing

  • Thank you for describing what you see the way you do, everyone sees all things differently, the painting was done in real originally to the music of Leonard Cohen, but I didn't wish to infringe on copyright so the music is my own, if you can get hold of "everybody knows" and play it with my sound track turned off the painting will have a totally different effect, take care, regards, luckeepeet

  • very cool i'm 24 i have 5 yrs of art classes all in high school and 1 in college stoped painting around 19 yrs old i'm getting back into it already painted 1 acrylic on canvas now i'm intrested in trying this out thanks and good job

  • Thanks for your positive comments I have just past my fifteen year last week as an art teacher although I prefer to describe myself as a guide, if I can do one good thing in art for someone each day, month or year my goal has been empowered, keep on painting, drawing or just make a mark it's all expression, all the best
