Now let's say that the Muppets had no knowledge of the Henson Company and that Jim Henson was like their birth father. After Henson passed away, the Muppets had nowhere else to go. So Mickey Mouse took them in as members of the Disney family. However, this would cut of any contact/interaction with the casts and Sesame Street and Fraggle Rock. Later on, the current Disney Corp. big-shots would take over everything,
buy Marvel and Naruto, plunge Mickey and his people into obscurity (i.e. a namby-pamby children's show), and significantly reduced the numbers of the Muppet cast, as well as their involvement (TV series' and specials) in anything. Meanwhile, Disney themselves are too busy green-lighting High School Musical, Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, and the Jonas Bros.
Luckily, Jason Spiegel caught wind of this and decided to do something about it.
@2071Johnny Selena is one of the better Disney Channel stars. Judging by her cameo in the recent Muppet movie, I can tell she's as big of a Muppet fan as Jason Segel is. She also posed for some British magazine wearing a T-shirt with, Guess who? Donald Duck! That's her message to Disney to never forget their roots. BTW, don't blame Disney in general for all the teenybopper shit now, that's the Disney Channel's fault.
Michael Eisner once said this during Jim Henson's first attempt to sell the Muppets to Disney, "Mickey Mouse has a new sibling, he'll need to get used to it". Well, he and kermit seem to have been friends for a long time according to this special.
@sonikkufanboy Kermit mentioned that he and Mickey were members of FASA (short for Fictional Animal Stars of America). Bugs Bunny and Yogi Bear might even be members of this group as well.
@Rtkat3 Yeah, and you know, I kind of think Winnie the Pooh, The Pink Panther, The Cat in the Hat, Scooby-Doo and Spongebob are part of that club too.
mickey meeting kermit. that was so amazing for me as a kid back than!! two icons created by two outstanding creative geniuses meeting each other. rip mr. disney and henson.
3 of My Favorite Loves Were Put Together in THIS Special! My Love of Disney, My Love of Disney Parks and My Love of the Muppets!!!! This was the Embodiement of both the Legacies of the Great Jim Henson and Walt Disney!!! And to be completely honest, I'm happy that those loves came together again nearly 10 Years Later! I just wish there was just more specials like this today!!! But Anyway I just want to say thank you for sharing your childhood memories to all the world!!! =)
I thought it was just going to be someone in a costume for Mickey. Instead they go through the trouble of animating, putting him in a real enviorment, and make it look like he's interacting from the Muppets. That's true quality and hard work right there!
@mattjnor98 its only because of the creater of the muppets diead that deal to sell the rights to disney so disney had to wait around 10 years to earn the rights
Its amazing how much this brought me back to the days when I would stay up late at night just dreaming of being there. I remember recording this when I was six and watching it in the mornings, after I would have a dream of being there. Thank you for bringing this back to me after so many years, this film, for me really defines the "disney spirit" I feel it as I watched this just like I did then. I have yet had the same feeling about anything else. This film really contains magic for me, thanks
Obviously they're joking about the "philosophy" line, but I've always thought that Rainbow Connection was a really profound philosophical song! And much more beautiful than When You Wish Upon a Star, which it even gently criticizes in its lyrics ("Who said that every wish would be heard and answered when wished on the morning star? Somebody thought of that, and someone believed it: and look what it's done so far...").
It was basically made to promote Disney's impending acquisition of the Muppets, which is why Mickey says "welcome to the family," but the deal fell through after Henson's death.
Mickey looks a little strange in his casual office clothes there... and if you freeze frame it while he's talking he strikes the oddest faces and poses. 1:11
1:19 Wow, that's probably the first time I've seen a hand drawn character actually touching a live puppet (though Mickey's hands are huge compared to Kermit 's small body).
Shortly after this film was made, Jim Henson went on the Arsenio Hall talk show to promote it. He had a sore throat, he waited too long to go to hospital, started coughing up blood, and died 12 days after the Arsenio Hall show apperance. He would have survived if he had antibiotics a few hours sooner or if he had a blood transfusion but he refused the blood transfusion due to his Jehovah's Witness beliefs.
Just the mouse is Walt's alter ago, the same can be said for Kermit with Jim. And both have inner "magic" that no dark cynical attitude can destroy, for indeed, "when you wish upon star, dreams come true", especially after you "find that rainbow connection for the lovers, the dreamers, and you".
RIP Walt & Jim! You were true visionaries and your countless fans miss you dearly!
FLPman: I thought so, for even among the corporate senergy, there has to be fans somewhere that love both Disney and Henson for their original visions.
colacadstink: Mickey's lucky then. I am surprised that Piggy hit on the mouse though, especially since--according to Walt--"in 'real life', Mickey is privately married to Minnie" and considering that Piggy got hitched with her frog in Muppets Take Manhattan (and Muppet sources make the weddding scene canon, even if the pig and frog beat around the bush about the whole thing).
I love the muppets and I thank whoever put this up because I love to see anything muppet, however...this thing is a shameless shill for Disney World and it's hard to see it as anything but a commercial. I'll never understand why Henson sold the Muppets to Disney anyway. On the positive side, the Muppet "ride" at MGM is my favorite thing at Disney and one of the last projects Henson worked on!
But, remember, the Muppets were first used in commercials in the 50s and 60s anyway, they've always existed for the purpose of selling things. And didn't he sell them to Disney because managing the company was too stressful for him and he was more interested in the creative angle?
The scene with Mickey wasn't what I thought it'd be and I'm glad. I at first expected someone in the Mickey Mouse cotume they use at Disney World with a pre-recorded sample of his voice, so I was pleasently suprised to see the true animated Mickey projected in the real world via green screen like in Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
Tell me about it. The way they put live action and animation together is the greatest! Better than that CGI crud. I'd give ANYTHING to be filmed with Max or Darkwing Duck!!!
