Gosh... I watched Downton Abbey S1 ep1 for the first time last night (have watched the clips in YT many times tho), and immediately recognised Brendan Coyle from North and South! Then I fell in love with his Mr Bates and Anna. Beautiful...

Aw how sweet they both are! I love the pairing Bates/ Anna. They must come together. At 3:04 when she confess him her love and he says "You are a lady to me"... BEST ROMANTIC SCENE IN DOWNTON! I hope Mr. Bates & Anna get together in season 2! :-)

Normally, I woulden't want to be in a room when people want despirately to be alone, so watching them makes me feel like closing the door,leaving a lamp, and tell them i'll guard the house!Kindness, love, attraction, etc... we all need to keep it and help it! Great story

"It will change the way we think of him. It always does." Bates seemed so adamant that secrets, once told, will change everyone's view of a person. So I'm guessing that whatever his secret is, it has been revealed before and changed the way people though of him. Just a theory!!
