  • Thanks this works great I just made it in 1.2

  • the top layer of pistons does not stick to the bottom layer, it just stays in mid air with the gravel. What am i doing wrong?

  • any way you can make the gate bigger and wider???

  • the redstone torches on the closing mechanism on the bottom just turn off and dont do anything help!

  • check out mine! its 6 by 6 and yes it pushes up 6 blocks

  • 4:56

  • you are going to fast ass

  • This doesn't work in 1.1 Pistons can't stick to pistons anymore.

  • how do u put on the back buttons

  • HELP when the gravel pushes up the fence it only pushes it up one block high and not two blocks high

  • mine doesn't work the sticky pistons arnt sticky. i made this in creative mode with the tomanyitems mod is it the creative mode? please help.

  • @TheNinjaman145 never mind i got it.

  • I tried it with stone and it works.

  • Can you make a video were i can see how to hide the redstone stuff?

  • finally someone shows you how. I LOVE YOU @Astrusum

  • For some reason this doesn't work for me anymore.

  • thanks works great

  • nvm

  • doeznt work sry

  • @Astrusum what recording software do you use?

  • I would enjoy something a bit smaller, something that i can hide in a small village, while still having that gate, just shorter redstone setup.

  • this is great.

  • Never mind, soz for wasting your time

  • hi, um, In 2:46, when you test it, I do and when I do it, the normal pistons stay in the air. Do you know what's wrong with the pistons. I REALLY, REALLY wanna know

  • Since 1.0.0 I've tried building this in SMP, and the vertical redstone circuit doesnt work. I hit the button and it seems to not complete the circuit, and douses the bottom two redstone torches, instead of closing the gate and relighting them. any help? The one I have in SSP works.

  • @Kelzarian I'm having the same in my test build. The redstone hisses off then the whole thing just dies.

  • This was awesome thx sooo much!!

  • but will it blend?

  • I got the gate working fine, its just the design I need help with. My fence continues to get attached to the blocks I put around it, anyway to stop that?

  • @ThamuzOblivion not after 1.8

  • @ThamuzOblivion You can maybe make a mechanism that makes gravel/sand fall next to it or have half slabs next to it. But i'm not sure!

  • Is there any good way to cover up the circuitry in the back?

  • I need help,on the bottom left repeater, when i place it , the redstone dust connects to it when yours doesnt.

  • @NuclearFilms6 Not sure what exactly you mean, PM me a screenshot

  • nice check out my 2 castle gates

  • The bottom set of pistons at the top are always on. Help.

  • @HungeryDead what i did was pretty simple, the part where you are sending a vertical current through red torch is your problem. If the red torch on top is on yet the redstone you are testing at is off, then dig down another 2 blocks and do another vertical current. This should make your testing redstone and the redstone torch off.

  • Link to SPC mod?

  • I like this, but it's pretty complicated

  • how do i make a switch on both sides

  • yeah...il stick with presure plates infront of doors...

  • this was hard to implement, you go very fast. I had to pause every few seconds to copy what you did lol

  • LIKE!

  • what?! Lol... nice video!

  • im to lazy to actually do this. I'll just have my friend do it....We are trying to beat Minecraft in multiplayer this will be a long process

  • @TheChoo149 You can't beat Minecraft.

  • Perfect tutorial, and nice music ;)

  • how come the buttons stick like that? how do you get them to do that?

  • Cool I subbed

  • music name please :)

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH: I'M GONNA LIKE AND FAVORITE

  • I want to give you 99999999999999999999999999999999999 thumbs up

  • This would have to be the best minecraft video I've seen

  • best tutorial for this

  • thankyou so much bro

  • Really well done.

  • Thanks Bro! This really helped. This is the best video on this BY FAR!

  • at first i was like, i can do this. but then 30 minutes later i was like, nope.

  • how do you stack your items so high? plz respond (i feel like such a noob) -_-

  • @afatmeanguy you can only do it with too many items. if you shift-click, it gives you stacks of 111.

  • @JoeBannanas123 than kyou alot and i do have toomanyitems :D

  • The building took like 7 minutes...

  • hey i tried to do the open then close method on the other side but it seems to hard so can you make a video how to do it on the other side?

  • @Astrusum Why didn't you use a T-flip flop and wire it to both sides?

  • can you show how to put two buttons on both sides so it will be able to open the gate and close it from insde and outside?

  • Does this work with iron bars?

  • This is great thanks for taking the time to show this off :D

  • How to be a n00b

    Step 1: Watch video

Step 2: Try it for yourself

    Step 3: Fail

    Step 4: Rage in Comments

    Step 5: ????

    Step 6: Profit

  • Amazing Tut man... if its not to much to ask... could you make one that has another set of pistons so that the fences raise 3 instead of 2? anyway... i subbed and liked!!! great job.

  • PLEASE IGNORE:

    my progress= 6:40

  • Thats really a nice way to make a portcullis. I tried that myself and it was really not that difficult to construct. However... i dont like the fact that you can push the fences only 2 blocks up so im currently working on a more complex version... i'll upload it when I'm done.

  • @RTMaster1 oh can you message me the video? i need one that can push 5 fences

  • @TheDragonageorigins I'll do as soon as it's finished. If everything works as intended, you should be able to push up to 8 fences (or iron bars, which i prefer).

  • @RTMaster1 I finished a 3 high gate months ago but been so busy I havent had the time to record a tutorial, would be great if others did.

On the topic of gate height though, 8 is just not practical, the maximum amount of fences that can be pushed due to the gravel needed is 3 (bot piston needs to push 1 pistons+8gravel=3 blocks left from the 12 max push distance). It will also take a silly long time (200+ delay ticks). I personally find the 3gate the most practical as it's fast and [continued]

  • @Astrusum [continued]... allows for 7 fences, while a 4gate takes a lot longer to open and only allows for 5 fences above the gravel.

  • @RTMaster1 thank you so much man, that would be great

  • ive got a problem with top row pistons not retracting. im using 1.8.1 and pretty sure its not an issue with the current build just my redstone wiring. any help would be great.

  • @UglyCasanova134 nvm got it to work. the top redstone torch needs to be off

  • heyy please can u help me?? ive done it eactly the same as you and ive tried ots of times but for some reason only the top row of pistons is activated and the lower row does nothing, please help me :(

  • @TheChrispy97 The redstone torch you connect the top pistons (and lower row too) should be a torch that's normally OFF.

  • my sticky piston isn't sticky do you know why?

  • as you can see the wiring is very simple *shows like 8 complex wire passages w/ reapeaters*

  • y dont my 2nd pistons retract with the bottom? It worked when I did it alone but not when its in my castle doorway? plz help!

  • does this accualy work on 1.8 ?

cuz that might be the problem with the pistons dont retracting....

ill try to make my own 1.8 version :)

  • @Mocnario123 Even works in 1.9 :)

Made about 5 of them on 1.8 and 1.9 servers yesterday.

  • @Astrusum :O i tried to make my own... its just like i make different the timing and now it works XD its your version only with the timing so i dont made my own version :P just fixed it.... AND WHERE IS THE VIDEO PLEASEEEEEEEE!

  • Does this work from the inside as well

  • could u make i lift higher by adding more gravel and less fence

  • Thank you!!!

This is the BEST Piston door ever!!

  • i followed your tutorial completely but for some reason the lower pistons wont extend :(

  • Dont worry fixed it, btw it makes everything a lot harder if you make the height of the fences even.

  • From previous post, when i press the close only the normal pistons go down not both. then both go down and stay down

  • Nice Vid but something has happened with me. What happens is when i press the button to close it pushes it down 1 space so there is still a space in the middles the it pushes again and it all good, but then it doesnt retract so when i try to open i can't. Help please

  • HELP PLEASE.

I have done everything exactly as you have.

The gate won't go back down. It looks like the red-stone torches aren't noticing that they are being told to change signals.

  • I built this following you instructions but for some reason ever time i try to build it my upper pistons stay down i have re-built it like 7 times and i get it every time... if someone could help me it would be greatly appreciated thanks! just send me a PM or sommtin

  • Oh, clever idea. Haven't thought of that. Nice :)

  • Did the design, it seems that it only pushes one block high with the two pistons and 2 gravel, so there's really no room to fit under the gate. This is before adding the second part which the gate is pushed down.

  • @MrScorn Hmm.. nevermind, it seems to be a glitch where the first one raises first (even though I did the repeaters exactly as you did in the exact place just to test and everything) where the first one raises, then once it retracts the other one pushes up and retracts instantly and the blocks appear higher, just a bug so it seems.

  • Can i make it push the fences 3 storys up insted of two? It looks soo mutch better.

  • when i try this i do everything as shown but my normal piston is elevated but does not stick o my sticky piston

  • Could you show how to integrate a master override switch, like if it's up then the buttons work and if it's down then they don't. Thanks.

  • Thanks so much for the tutorial, its an easy but ingenious way of making a badass castle gate..

A note for other SMP users you might wanna tweak the "Power On" state for the sticky pistons by another tick (just another repeater to the one set to maximum (3) ) to compensate for any server (computing) lag. 1 tick should to it add more till you reach the desired effect.

  • Hey man do you htink I can do this to lift 3 blocks instead of just 2?

  • @KentaCrystal007 @MichelsFX I show the timings needed in Part 2 (link in description), it should be possible to copy it if you already successfully followed this tutorial. I have since then refined the design and build a lot of 3 high gates though, so might make a tutorial if enough people want it.

  • @Astrusum A three high tutorial would be fantastic.

  • @Astrusum A 3 high gate tutorial would be very much appreciated

  • @KentaCrystal007 Another tut would be great especially since 1.8 is coming soon.

  • @MichelsFX you need another set of pistons

  • Is the gravel neccesary?

  • @lightningflash836 sand works just fine too

  • @longacrestreet Ok thanks.

  • well, nice work dude

  • You're so damn awsome dude! Great work and keep it up

  • @gingerone97 just PM me the server IP or some screenshots/world upload then :)

  • @Astrusum u r the most awesome minecrafter i have ever seen!!!!!!! keep up the great work!

  • Comment removed

  • @Jordyhero13 you placed the top 1 block too high or too low to use the exact design I'm using then, reverse the signal. The torch need to be off when there's no input signal.

  • @Astrusum My sticky pistons dont stick to the pistons for the closing one.

  • worked perfectly thanks for the vid

  • wow! took so long but definatly worth it :)

  • now close it on the other side

  • In SMP, the closest I can get to getting this right (bottom layer - why bother trying to do the top if the bottom doesn't work properly yet :P) is having to push the button twice.

Like others have said, on the first "push", it leaves the top layer of pistons retracted, because a sticky piston won't pull a retracted regular piston until it's reset... so the timings are all skewed (maybe just an SMP problem?).

Either way, like I said, 2 pushes, sometimes 3, of the system I've designed = working

  • @crosys86 If you copied the timings at 2:30 exactly, it should at least work in SSP (you should check). If you do and the same design doesn't on SMP, the server is probably too laggy for these timings to be used.

If that's the case, try extending the timings the following way:

Left repeater (bottom piston) = still 0 delay

Middle repeater (bottom piston) = add 1 more repeater and set both to 3 (max) delay

Right repeater (top piston) = 3 delay

If it still doesn't work, PM me the server IP

  • Comment removed

  • @Astrusum Yeah in SSP your timings at 2.30 work fine, in SMP you need the extra delays (at least for my server, anyway). Cheers!

  • You sir a a genius,a freakin genius

  • SINGLE PLAYER COMMANDS???

  • help for me when i do it the sticky piston will not pick up the regular piston i don't know why it just won't pull it back and i did everything u did!!

  • okai Thx

  • The mod is single player commands

  • What Is the name of the mod you use that you can place a block from whatever distance you like :D plz comm me back

  • this does not work for me when i put the gravel down and activate it shoots up in the air help?

  • @xShadowsHunter lol, you have the mod then, pistons will not throw blocks if they are vanilla

  • when i did this it didnt work with 10 pistons and the stiky pistons wont take down the pistons

  • i did everything you did BUT the top set of pistons that push up DONT come down they go up one and stay there any idea why ?????

  • @xmelficex sounds like a feedback loop

  • is there a way to set it up so when you press the button afer so many seconds it auto closes ???

  • i have my castle made took me weeks to build so space is tight for me

  • Simplest EVER seen! Nice job pal!

  • Very nice Work

  • my top pistions stay open so it doesnt work what so ever. how to i get them to turn off?

  • @maggotcrash666

I'm having the same problem, I've made two gates, the first one worked and this second one the pistons stay open on the top and I can't get it to work :(

  • Nice idea. Love the song lol

  • you could use a t flip flop to make there be only 1 button

  • @mistercow09 Watch my part2 :)

  • teraria wil have this in next update

  • gravel is the most disgusting block ever lol

  • @bilwit I would think so but I'm not the greatest with redstone

  • I got everything to work, until the end. When i use the opening switch, it only pushes up the gate by 1 block but you can't get under. If I add more gravel to the bottom, you still can't get through because the gravel is blocking the path. Any tips?

  • @MrA164 Sounds like the top pistons in the opening mechanism opens before the bottom ones, check the repeater timings and that there's no feedback loops.

  • @Astrusum Wow, the repeaters were off time. I got it fixed now. Thanks! :)

  • so i guess theres no way to do it without the gravel coming up from the floor?

  • @EvilNecroid Not unless you want to use sand or have redstone repeaters on the floor in front of the gate that you have to step over.

  • why cant u just put a sticky piston with another sticky piston on tht 1 on top and use a lever? Then you wouldnt need 2 mechanisms

  • @pivotmaster9102 Because you would need redstone on the floor at the entrance to power the top pistons once the bottom ones are powered (ugly), and I prefer a portcullis to my castle.

  • I've been looking for something like this for a while so I could build a large door for my airplane hangar (I have Flan's WW2 Planes mod installed), great job on the tutorial. 1 question though: is there any way I could have it open more than 2 blocks high? Just curious, cuz I think for a hangar it would look better if the door opened higher. Thanks!

  • @MetallicaFan9582 you can simply hook up more sticky pistons to the bottom and top, however each layer adds a fair amount more complexity. the trickiest part is making sure that the timings are correct, for example, you would have the bottom push on 1 tick, second on 3, and third on 5, very similar to what was done in this video, simply expand on it. also keep in mind the 12 block push limitation

  • @superfredde98 Which is why I showed a bunch of ways to open it, you get to choose yourself :)

personally I like the buttons and levers that I show in my follow-up video.

  • @Astrusum Don't you have to click the lever twice though? In contrast to pressing the button once since it outputs a sequence (1,0)?

  • @bilwit That's why you place a NOT-gate before one of the monostable circuits. That way the sequence is split into 2, being (1,0) and (0,1). Whenever you click the lever, it will send a signal that opposite of the last (open/close). You should really check out my follow-up video as I go into depth with using levers and buttons there (link in description).

  • Great tutorial! Thanks so much, it helped me a lot! :D

  • Awesome!

  • I loved the jazz at the end! Y U NO USE FOR WHOLE VIDEO?! lol

THANK YOU for posting a tutorial!!! :DD It took me a while, but it's SO, EPIC!! THAANK YOUU!!

  • is this multiplayer or single with a mod?

  • Thanks Astrusum this really helped i tried to make the one that you need better than wolves but it sucks because a windmill has to power it and there is this giant annoying thing in front of your house and it looks really retarded now i realized i dont need better than wolves and i can just do it this very simple way there is nothing bulky in the front of my house and it looks great thanks for all your help and i love how you are helping everyone who say they have problems with the portcullis.

  • in height and in compact redstone.... cuz my castle door is 4 fences wide so it even

  • @GriMMR34PR649 Check out my follow-up video (link in description), I show how to make it slimmer so it only takes up 4 blocks when covered instead of 5. As for height, apart from choosing how many fence blocks you want, it's as compact as possible.

  • @Astrusum thanks... ill look at it... oh one more thing how can u make a button open the door on the outside and a button tht closes it in the inside
