  • Nice work man! gonna work on it now

  • Thanks for the excellent lesson, I'm only starting off!

  • Loved the video, David. Very, very helpful. The only thing I couldn't make out is that A chord that you walk up the fretboard. Could you explain what you're doing there? Thanks in advance.

  • Drop D is good way to do the song. That was helpful for me in doing some other things in that tuning. Sounds great.

  • wrong totally wrong

  • Just a great tutorial! I come back to it again and again. A big thank-you from Vancouver, Canada

  • Great job. Beautiful. Thanks for the lesson. I get the feeling you like Johnny Cash. Your voice reminds me of the "American Recordings", which I love.

  • This is a really nice tutorial well done!

  • I've wanted to learn this since I was very, very young. Thank you very much for this.

  • Thank-You So much for the tutorial for this song. I'm new to guitar and lately I've just been dreaming of playing this amazing song. It's still a working progress for me, but so far it's sounding like I might actually be getting it, thanks to you.

    Thanks again! :)

  • Thanks for the lesson, I've always wanted to play this song. You embellish the main chords very well, it sounds great!

  • Thank you so very much, and for the Love has no pride tutorial also. What an enjoyable lesson. Nice Claddagh ring there too:)

  • Fantastic tutorial. Thank you.

  • Nice soulful job on that song. Thanks for the inspiration

  • i love you david!

  • thanks a lot, fantastic lesson.

  • David, you play that tune better than Clapton did......

  • Thanks for the great lesson!

  • "You can give this finger to the audience" haha

  • @Roisinmca lmao i laughed too

  • Excellent tnx

  • Brilliant tutorial Mr. Jones. Many thanks.

  • Great Stuff!

  • Thanks! You are a little bit country, and a little bit rock n roll!

  • nice job on the song david hope your friend took as much from the lesson as i did, thanks a lot, keep jamming....

  • Very nice, thanks for posting that.

That de-mystified it for me. Also, I think that's the way Steve Winwood is playing it on his "contest" video--the one with him in front of the fireplace.

    Thank you!

  • Great tutorial... I've been playing guitar for 8 years religiously but just couldn't figure this one out exactly. You've really helped to clear this up for me!

  • Excellent Dave!

I have been resisting trying drop D tuning for a long time but I think your vid has convinced me I should. I can almost get the walk down base for this song, which you show here so well. I do it in normal tuning in key A, but it dosn't work fully and is certainly not so clean as you do it.

    Cheers for this!

  • Nice Job and thanks for showing me some little tricks that really make the song sound spot on - keep on jammin'

  • Soulful :)

  • When you sing you remind me of Jonny Cash, very nice video, cheers!

  • Great arrangement and I'm glad I found it. Beautiful 000 by the way. Thanks for sharing!!

  • give this finger to the audience...ROFL priceless.

  • Good God, Man!! Sweet guitar!! I skipped your lesson twice because it was done as a lefty... what a mistake. It's probably the best lesson on the internet for that song and it is because seeing it in reverse position forces you to listen to the tones rather than watching the fingers. You present it slowly and deliberately making it much easier to learn. Your interpretation and execution is spot on! Thanks for the post. You took something that looked and sounded difficult and made it easy.

  • I think the last chords of chorus are Em7 G F#m Em D.

  • @JoeGancher Yep.

  • Dude great job. I've been trying to learn this song for 30 years and you taught me more in 9 minutes than ever before. thank you

  • Very very nice man!

  • Thanks for the lesson... come to my page and see what learned from you :)

  • Very nice. I really like your arrangement and the drop D tuning. I'm going to work on this lesson :)

  • this guy's great. Avery good teacher.

  • I very rarely comment, but had to this time. You just showed me how to play one of my all time favorites! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!! All I need to do now is translate it to the 12 string :)

  • very nice work. You have a skill for teaching. Give us more !

  • Clever. How did they write this? Genius.

  • Outstanding lesson!! The Drop D helps get a nice fat sound for one guitar without needing extra guitars to get some harmonic texture. Very nice arrangement and youv'e got a beautiful guitar. I hope your friend requests some more classic lessons.

  • Very, very nice. A real classic song I had forgotten about.

    Well done.

  • I love this arrangement and I can play it with your help.

    Thanks

  • Really nice David, thanks for that. What guitar are you playing, I guess it's a Martin?

  • Excellent tutorial. You laid this out extremely well. I am really impressed with how easy it was to understand. Thanks.

  • Good vid, but flip it over to righty so I can follow it!!

  • And its Left Handed too..

    Sweet Guitar for a lefty!

  • First time I ever felt compelled to comment on a post - just had to say thanks - great tutorial. It does take a couple viewings to quit drooling over that sweet Martin.

  • Check the kick ass inlays on that Martin!Thx for the lesson.Huge clapton fan!

  • You sounded great! Thanks for the lesson.

  • Sweet sounding martin man! i love this song

  • very good instructional video. Your Martin sounds great. What model is it.

  • great, thx ^^

  • I think this absolutely the very best thing I have ever seen on youtube!!! I agree with teers80 wish you were right handed....But...I WILL get this. Thank you so much for sharing

  • Outstanding work. Could you please post another video of the same song in drop "D" tuning but showing how to pick the song?

  • Thats a gorgeous ax. Thanks for the video!

  • Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge. It is the good stuff about the internet.

  • Great lesson. Thank you.

Clapton and Winwood, in both the 2007 Crossroads and Madison Square Garden DVDs use a different tuning/key.

    Can't figure that out . . .

  • Winwood has his guitar tuned down. Tune your Low E to the D.Tune the low E to a D. Exactly like Drop D guitar tuning. Pluck the 2 strings together or alternate between them until they sound alike. The low D will be an octave lower then the D you are tuning from, but they are the exact same note. Then tune the rest of your guitar as you would regularly tune it. Tune the rest of the strings in relation to the D you just dropped down.

  • Right - that must be what they did. Thanks again...

  • or perhaps they used a capo?

  • No capo on those guitars in those DVDs. Must have done what nelg321 said.

  • yo dont have 2 drop D but it helps

  • Thank you very much for posting this video David, it's one of my favourit songs and I've tried to play it for almost thirty years!

Now I know what to do! :-)

    Leo

  • Beautiful guit. Nice job.

  • Mr. Jones, thanks for posting. With enough practice I hope tp play it half as well as you.

  • Thanks for the great lesson, David! Love the sound of that old Martin! From one leftie to another, it was great to see how other people perceive us playing. Guess I never thought about how we look to the righties?

  • I really appreciate this pleasant and informal tutorial. Thanks a lot, good on you RDAVIDJONES99.

We're probably going to cover this one in my band and this has been a real help. Been playing for 50 years now but doh!...have had trouble with this one, probably as Winwood either plays it in D# or thepitch on video transfers have been messed with. nyway, I can play it now. Many thanks.

  • There is a guy "Magikbee" on here that plays this song and mentions you in the caption, that your friend by any chance? I am trying to figure out ways to dress up the chords and I have to admit I really like the way he did it.

  • very good song. what kind of martin is that?

  • 000 41L made in 1970

  • Good work man. I can use some of this. Thanks

  • Very Nice,

    Love The Martin.

  • Thanks David, I enjoyed the time spent on this song. Hope lifes good...Thanks again

  • Nice job, David! One of my favorite songs of all time. My trio does this one with me singing and playing piano. Keeping it simple is the key to revealing its beauty. Great voice, by the way. Easy to listen to. Thanks for your great work.

    Dennis

  • Hey there - Nice lesson. Right to the point and really sounds beautiful. Thank you!

  • Wacky watchin a lefty, but quite easy to understand. With already having a bit of practice with this song coming into this video, it was easy to pick up the rest.
