Loved the video, David. Very, very helpful. The only thing I couldn't make out is that A chord that you walk up the fretboard. Could you explain what you're doing there? Thanks in advance.
Great job. Beautiful. Thanks for the lesson. I get the feeling you like Johnny Cash. Your voice reminds me of the "American Recordings", which I love.
Thank-You So much for the tutorial for this song. I'm new to guitar and lately I've just been dreaming of playing this amazing song. It's still a working progress for me, but so far it's sounding like I might actually be getting it, thanks to you.
That de-mystified it for me. Also, I think that's the way Steve Winwood is playing it on his "contest" video--the one with him in front of the fireplace.
Great tutorial... I've been playing guitar for 8 years religiously but just couldn't figure this one out exactly. You've really helped to clear this up for me!
I have been resisting trying drop D tuning for a long time but I think your vid has convinced me I should. I can almost get the walk down base for this song, which you show here so well. I do it in normal tuning in key A, but it dosn't work fully and is certainly not so clean as you do it.
Good God, Man!! Sweet guitar!! I skipped your lesson twice because it was done as a lefty... what a mistake. It's probably the best lesson on the internet for that song and it is because seeing it in reverse position forces you to listen to the tones rather than watching the fingers. You present it slowly and deliberately making it much easier to learn. Your interpretation and execution is spot on! Thanks for the post. You took something that looked and sounded difficult and made it easy.
I very rarely comment, but had to this time. You just showed me how to play one of my all time favorites! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!! All I need to do now is translate it to the 12 string :)
Outstanding lesson!! The Drop D helps get a nice fat sound for one guitar without needing extra guitars to get some harmonic texture. Very nice arrangement and youv'e got a beautiful guitar. I hope your friend requests some more classic lessons.
First time I ever felt compelled to comment on a post - just had to say thanks - great tutorial. It does take a couple viewings to quit drooling over that sweet Martin.
I think this absolutely the very best thing I have ever seen on youtube!!! I agree with teers80 wish you were right handed....But...I WILL get this. Thank you so much for sharing
Winwood has his guitar tuned down. Tune your Low E to the D.Tune the low E to a D. Exactly like Drop D guitar tuning. Pluck the 2 strings together or alternate between them until they sound alike. The low D will be an octave lower then the D you are tuning from, but they are the exact same note. Then tune the rest of your guitar as you would regularly tune it. Tune the rest of the strings in relation to the D you just dropped down.
Thanks for the great lesson, David! Love the sound of that old Martin! From one leftie to another, it was great to see how other people perceive us playing. Guess I never thought about how we look to the righties?
I really appreciate this pleasant and informal tutorial. Thanks a lot, good on you RDAVIDJONES99.
We're probably going to cover this one in my band and this has been a real help. Been playing for 50 years now but doh!...have had trouble with this one, probably as Winwood either plays it in D# or thepitch on video transfers have been messed with. nyway, I can play it now. Many thanks.
There is a guy "Magikbee" on here that plays this song and mentions you in the caption, that your friend by any chance? I am trying to figure out ways to dress up the chords and I have to admit I really like the way he did it.
Nice job, David! One of my favorite songs of all time. My trio does this one with me singing and playing piano. Keeping it simple is the key to revealing its beauty. Great voice, by the way. Easy to listen to. Thanks for your great work.
Wacky watchin a lefty, but quite easy to understand. With already having a bit of practice with this song coming into this video, it was easy to pick up the rest.
Thanks so much for sharing - I've loved this song for years and you pushed me to improve how I played it. I just posted my version and credited you with helping me!
THANKS A LOT!! one of the best tutorials I've seen so far on youtube. great work! well explained and finally the camera is where it's supposed to be. By the way, I liked the variation during the chorus
Open D tuning. I'll be a monkey's uncle. ROFL I have been trying to get this song right for years and best I could do was a shadow approximation b4 watching this. The beer's on me if we ever meet.
"You never have to put this finger into the first string, you can give it to the Audence." You do know that you are flipping everyone the bird when you do that, right. Anyway nice job, i really want to play this one. Thanks for the video.

Clapton and Winwood, in both the 2007 Crossroads and Madison Square Garden DVDs use a different tuning/key.
Can't figure that out . . .
