I've only had 2 but on nearly all the maps there are buildings for people to hide and its very easy to shoot down aslong as there is someone willing to shoot it down. I've taken down like 3 Gunships just by using the SAM Turret. The only map i can see your friend getting 45 kills with a single Gunship is on Nuketown. But that is the smallest map and the spawns are very wide open...
