This is kinda useless go kart.I have built plenty of wooden go carts similar to this one using bearings as wheels without a motor (like your version one). The reason it's useless because of the breaks. You cannot stop the cart while steering because you have a rope as your steering and you are depending on your hands for the breaks. Unless you have four hands, this project is fail. No offense, but this can be done in a much more professional way. Good luck!

You probably want to design the go kart and figure out what you need to do before you ever start. I stopped making wooden go karts long time ago. They are waste of time and money, while they are completely unsafe.

Try to design a regular go kart using metal pipes and a welder. Make it 2wd, and for the breaks, you better off buying a break system about $100 for both rear wheels. Steering wheel and column is a must in any go kart. Do it right the 1st time. Good luck!

I think the rear wheels are too small...that gear is nearly touching the ground. If you run over a bump or a rock it will bend it or the chain links.

@muhgust I am trying to remember this. Look in the area that has all the casting wheels for equipment. I think I bought wheels with the mounts then removed the wheels so an axle would fit. In my local home depot its in the area where they sell all the hardware like nuts, bolts and stuff like that.

@epicfantasy no the vertical shaft cant be used to drive it. unless you have a twisted belt configuration or like you said a gearbox. speed is no problem you can simply adjust the carburetor to set the idle speed. nice tho I built the downhill version I might make a vid on that if i find a hill to ride on :P

@PTEredmond It makes a very big difference - the size ratio of the gears. Smaller gear on the wheel means faster go kart, but it takes more horsepower to run.

@TheMrdjordjevic Kind of a long answer but I bought a piece of steel rod that was the right diameter- fit through the wheels correctly. I bought a pair of brackets with small wheels on them, removed the wheels and re-drilled the holes for my steel rod. mounted the brackets under the gokart then through the wheels.I think I have more pics and info about this on my site.
