Very proud and honored to have met some Royal Navy shipmates while in the US Navy, and we owe alot to the Brits for our traditions and folklore that binds all sailors.
@The1andOnlyCG Not just one, but two future carries. HMS Queen Elizabeth (not for the current queen, but the one from the 1600s or whatever) and the HMS Prince of Wales (for the honour of the title, not for the skunk that currently holds the title.)
The only problem is that the carriers won't be in active service until about 2020, which gives Argentina about eight years to invade the Falklands with a chance of victory.
@JFDB87 Oh no good sir, this is the 21st Century, not the 20th Century, we rule the waves from beneath them now, our might Tridents armed submarines strike in an instance, never seen until they want to be seen, and for those who do catch a glimpse of one outside Britannia, then you are usually the target.
Britannia no longer needs to rule the waves by being seen, we rule them without from the shadows.
@jackie901 but nonetheless, aircraft carriers are one of the most important feature of a modern military force. you can't launch planes or helicopters from submarines.
@The1andOnlyCG Well.... actually you can, Japan/USN did it a few times in WWII, it just doesn't work so well lol, Submarines are underrated by military analysists, they've come along way since 1945 and I think with the level of weapons being developed by some nations specifically designed to kill carriers a submarine would be much safer.
@The1andOnlyCG Wouldn't even need to be something like a Typhoon, a submarine capable of launching UCAV's and just build the UCAVs so that they could float or deploy ballasts then land them back in the water near the sub and recover them, in fact you may not need a carrier type deck, launch them like missiles and have them deploy into a flight mode as they near a target.
@The1andOnlyCG A Submersible Drone Carrier, I mean we're capable of launching cruise missiles and flying them like aircraft to a destination and then we crash them into the target, why no just create a cruise missile type craft which inside or externally contains micro missiles or rockets then just point it at a target and launch one then find a new target and when done, land the craft in the water, the USN currently is developing a carrier based UCAV why not beat them to it lol
@neus001 It wasnt just a labour overspend. The tories like to keep telling us that, and to a point it is true, but bailing out the banks cost billions, and the tories would also have to of done that if they had been in power in 2008!!
Guys, take it easy. Well Im 17 and Australian, and Republican. Please, don't abuse the crap outta me. The Queen said it herself, she believes Australia has grown into a very mature developed nation, and if it decides to become a Republic than there is nothing wrong with that because Australia is such a different country to Britain with a very diverse different culture. @quarkwrok Being a Member of the Labor party i do represent a lot of them. Why dont we look at the bad constitutional monarchies, Kuwait, Malaysia, Swaziland, Cambodia, Lesotho, Its not called El Presidente it will be known as the President of the Commonwealth of Australia.
I'm a Yank with British ancestry (my English great great grandfather is buried in our family plot) and I say "Rule Britannia" right along with the rest. So very proud of my British ancestry. English - AND my Scots, Welsh, and Irish ancestry.

@DrDomTheChosenOne Majority of australians support the monarchy is only because they do not want to change the flag and they got stuck in the Royal wedding fever. Republicans have always existed but in the modern world its time to move away from Kings and Queens and into an age of democracy where we can choose who will be our head of state and not some douchebag from some family we do not know about. Your also very offensive "Lack of education" you sure do know how to make a sensible argument.
@owen82100 At 14 do you think you represent other Ozzies? You might change by the time you're 16. Your education doesn't seem to extend to knowing the difference between republicanism and democracy. Syria, Gaddaffi's Libya, Nazi Germany, USSR, all republics, Britain, Canada, Holland, all monarchies. You can want Oz to become a republic, fine, but please get your facts right. Oz is a Constitutional Monarchy and a damn fine democratic one at that. Better a PM and a figurehead than El Presidente.
@inTHEwrongGENERATION actually the majority is the people who do not give a fuck. We where so close in 1999 and once all the Royal wedding fever goes we are on track to an Australian republic, a kid in my class said to me today "Australia doesn't like the queen" and he was the kid that 3 months ago opposed my Republicanism views. Australians prefer to become a republic when the queen is gone and charles comes in, Its time to say "Goodbye Mum" and to live on our own
@Gremmis You can have a proud british heritage instead of them controlling you and you not having a say in your head of state instead letting a lunatic from the royal family *Cough* Prince Charles lead you. Sometimes it just good to say "Mum (Britain), its been a hell of a ride, we have fought each other side by side through war but i have to say i found a wife (USA) and well... Im (Australia) leaving you mum, but you will still be in my heart."
@Gremmis, 200 years has past and gone, You dont see Britain getting rid of the Magna carta? Ever heard of Moving forward? America did and it became the most powerful nation on the planet.

@owen82100 crap, I'm 17 and would leave Australia if we added another level of bureaucracy, and proclaimed a republic. @TheDieStem I wouldn't like to be under their control, but I'm not anti British. I love the British, and Gillard and her Labor Party are going to send Austrlia into a new USSR, count on it
there is no need for australia to be a republic, as an australian i am proud of our british heritage and am glad to still have strong connections with britain.
@owen82100 You stupid boy I am 14 and I will make sure we will never be a republic we shall stay as we have being for hundreds of years your view is of the minority and to be fair what I mean by minority is just you

You should also note that the majority of Australians support the monarchy. ;)

jackie901 6 days ago
@jackie901 well yes technically you can launch planes and helicopters from submarines.
but only a very small number and with little capability. try launching a wing of fully armed Eurofighter Typhoons from a submarine
that IS an interesting concept though... submarines with full aircraft carrier capability. wonder if that sort of thing will come in the future.
still, air support is the key to modern warfare, and thus aircraft carriers are still a necessity for a military force.
The1andOnlyCG 5 days ago
@The1andOnlyCG Wouldn't even need to be something like a Typhoon, a submarine capable of launching UCAV's and just build the UCAVs so that they could float or deploy ballasts then land them back in the water near the sub and recover them, in fact you may not need a carrier type deck, launch them like missiles and have them deploy into a flight mode as they near a target.

jackie901 5 days ago
@jackie901 you are right
but in a war, you will almost always need to put troops on the ground.
and those troops will need helicopters certainly.
maybe your right that jets could be entirely replaced by UCAVs, but ground forces will always need helicopters. big ones and lots of them.
a submarine can't really provide a helicopter base.
