I also work with children who have autism. I totally agree that the most important thing is to be their friend. I also feel, at this point, that I have learned as much (possibly more) from them as they have from me. They are very special little people.
Glad I stopped by. I truly admire that you work with these children. Through the years I have worked with autistic adults. I don't mena 'work' like in helping them... I mean as in coworkers. With help early in life, it can really make a difference and ensure they can function in society later in life. I assume that's the main goal in your work?
Oh Shannon... we can feel how much you love those adorable children. I truly hope this video can help prevent egocentric judgments on autistic people. I, for one, have an extra desire to understand the world they live in 24/7 after seeing this. Everyone deserves to be loved, accepted as an individual and cared for; especially kids. I saw through your eyes for one touching moment *soooooooooooo favorited and linked on facebook*
I'll be honest with you - this video was a tad amateurish. Obviously, that's fine, as you probably don't have any formal qualifications in media studies or whatever.
But still, this video felt a little over the top in terms of presentation. All style and very little substance. Oh, sure, I understand the metaphor about "pushing the car", and the vague dialogue references within the subtitles.
But I would have preferred it if you had just sat in front of the camera and talked about your experiences. Being a bit more direct, with minimal editing. For example, in relaying about how people don't understand autistic are singing in public places would have been more powerful, than adding abstract hooks like "Do you see that tree?", when you don't have the video/directional skills to back it up.
To comment on "But I would have preferred it if you had just sat in front of the camera and talked about your experiences." I wanted to make this less about me, MORE about them. Thus why I didn't put myself in it. Thank you anyways, for the criticism.
Great vid Shan. Very commendable of you working with the children. The son of my very good friend is autistic and he gets frustrated, sometimes violently, at what we view as "simple" tasks. Sometimes for no reason at all. Thanks for the excellent vid and have a great holiday season.
*hugs* Meltdowns are difficult to deal with...but only because we don't understand them completely. Communication is very very hard, tasks become magnified. Thank you so much again for responding.
Thankyou so much. Seeing her sing made me Cry. She LOves to sing and will sing sooo loud in the store but I never stop her. People stare but she LOVES to sing.. why would I stop her? Beautiful Video!! I love it.
Ok there, favorited 17 times :P. You are so lovely Shan and this video highlights how wonderful a heart you possess. I am honored to be your friend and was so moved by this video. Thank you for keeping us all aware, it such a loving, thoughtful way.
Wow! This is an absolutely amazing video! I work with a young autistic boy doing a program called ABA Therapy and you have portrayed autism perfectly! They are beautiful, beautiful people!
I feel badly about how autistic children and adults are treated many times. Being extremely near-sighted (with correction) myself, I know what it's like to be made fun of for reading with my nose, or having to wear "coke bottle" glasses" most of my life. I have a special affinity with people who are "not normal." Normalcy in my opinion is over-rated.
I had trifocals hehe. Back then glasses were much thicker too :( . I had a hard time because they did not realize I could not see until the second grade. I remember the first time I put glasses on, the world looked so much more beautiful. The most predominant memory was the detail on leaves I saw for the first time.
I can see the detail on leaves, as long as I'm no further than two inches away from them! My glasses only make me somewhat less near-sighted. Even with correction, I'm still considered legally blind (20/200 in my best eye).
That is worse than mine. I have some other factors that make it hard for me to see. Myopia, astigmatism, and can't see much up close. They are pretty well corrected with glasses though. I should wear contacts so I can see better, but they're stressful on the eyes for a computer geek.
Yeah, I remember looking down and I could see the carpet fibers and I said so! My mother almost cried. And seeing actual leaves on the trees not just a green blur. And blades of grass.
Aside from Strangeholm you are the most beautiful woman on Youtube.
I know you hear all that shit all the time...
but Intelligence is very sexy, and I love your points... science and philosophy is hot peace. :) "Different time forgotten space. your eyes look too your mothers face" ;) What? never mind...
I remember volunteering with autistic children and I remember how innocent they were, I also remember how they were treated by the ignorant and heartless, thanks for making this vid Shan these truly are special people and deserve respect
Autists are mostly personnal genuises and this is what a Human should be: sensitive, talented, attentive, explorative. We are the mutant ones, those who abandonned these personnal qualities for some kind of "social instinct" that, sadly, offerered some darwinnistic advantage to our ancestors. Luckily these genuises still exist somewhere in our genes, Humanity still exists somewhere in humans.
there's a lot of publicity lately about core-autisme , they recently published a movie over here called benx (search the international trailer here) , basically telling the life story of a autistic guy , who in real life comitted suicide (not in the movie) they also show how he acts, thinks, gets bullied etc ...
and tho this might help inform ppl about core-autisme it also hinders people with ASD and will stop them coming out of the closet of having ASD cos else they'd be ridiculed ...
Nice, Shan. I've worked with many autistic children, know some autistic adults, and have some autistic tendencies myself, it's why I have such an affinity with them. They see a bigger reality, I wish more were able to try and understand the gift they bring. You can taste the world, feel emotions of others as if they are your own, have no edges. It is a strange but beuatiful place. There, a confession for you.
I give this video 5 STARS!!!!! Excellent! (*_*)
