I remember this and I think it was a turntable hit at least. It deserved a top 40 placing but didn't quite make it. I like the way you can hear the individual instruments and the words on tracks from this time. People must have been spoilt for choice to overlook such a strong song.
Nick is a great bass player but really not a good singer. He can do at most backup vocals! Glad Limahl is back with the band! The 5 together rock! Wish I could go see them live.
in the 80s I was sure it was a synthesized bass sound.. it's such an expressive and unconventional bass.. too bad it's not widely known and used today..
@jimbotron70 it is called a Chapman Stick.....you can check it out on wikipedia if you would like.....Nick apparently called his the "Virtual Stick" as it was highly modified.....
This is for you, little brats that can´t even pee straight, to show you how good was pop music back in the 80´s. This song is MILES BETTER than any pussy fart we hear now on the radio or VH1. Go and download some tunes from Duran Duran, KajaGooGoo, New Order, Siouxsie & the Banshees, The Power Station, Gang of Four, The Police, Talking Heads, The Smiths, The Cure, Depeche Mode, Thompson Twins, Culture Club, Madness, Japan, etc. and find how good pop music was 25 years ago.
Quite honestly, either the lyrics are as morally dodgy as all hell or it's just dreadful lazy rhyming for the sake of it - or both. The 'music' doesn't redeem it either.
They really don't need Limahl, they are great without him.)Limahl was just a big mistake. He have good style singing but that style have nothing to do with the Kajagoogoo sound.Limahl made a record singing their masterpieces like "turnYourBackOnMe etc" The result? Embarrassing. If since the beginning too shy had been sung from Nick Beggs, all would have loved it in the same way...
No. You need a charasmatic frint man with an ego! All together were the complete package. You always need a power struggle in a band and Nick and Limahl had this going on which made it more interesting.
Thanks for this video! It's been in the back of my mind on and off since I was 13 (I'm 36 now). Completely transports me back to being a kid when MTV just started to happen in the UK.
I personally think Kajagoogoo did a lot more interesting music after Limahl left. Nick Beggs is a consumate bassist and although listening to it now it's unmistakably '80's' one can't deny the actual technical abilities of the guys. Something that's sorely missing in pop music today.
I saw Nick Beggs' solo gig with Chapman Stick. It was stunning to look and hear how he alone created 3 or 4 lines by playing them "in" and playing over them creating
It was the 80's not much made sense it was about the looks really. Ahh who cares I think they should have changed their name back to Art Nouveau after Limahl was gone.
HHAHAHAHA I just think maybe Nick was in a rhyming mood. I just dont know. Daughter is just a strange word for the song, even though I have no clue to what it is about.
:) very interesting lyric, we must to find the true!!! Loved you like no other I loved you like a brother. What do I discover? I know I won't recover. I can't help myself Well, here, is a man...and then... Now you turn your back on me. Much more than I ought to I loved you like a daughter. Got me in deep water and now I got to face the torture. I can't help myself Is confusing for me too...but i can imagine a lot fo things...and not normal things :))
Nifty song. Would have been better with Limahl, of course. This one appeared on a Greanpeace benefit album, if I recall correctly. Funny video, could do without the reptiles. I'm a bit phobic, you see.
This song is great and reminds me of "Dead Or Alive"

Nick Beggs is Talented but he isn't Limahl. He can sing I'll give him that but Limahl has that Sex Appeal that Draws you in.

Is it just me, or does the music in this song seem similar in Zappa's "Jones Crusher:?

Considering the limitations of video technology back then, they are far more interesting and imaginative than today's fodder.

They screwed big time by kicking out Limahl! Cost them a lot of money by doing that.

Limahl had such a boring singing style.. Nick's uplifting and energetic style fitted perfectly inside Kaja sound.

Interesting how many really good bass players were in these bands, Nick Beggs, Mick Karn, Mark King, John Taylor. Propably antithesis of punk?

I saw Nick Beggs' solo gig with Chapman Stick. It was stunning to look and hear how he alone created 3 or 4 lines by playing them "in" and playing over them creating
an one-man orchestra.

I think Nick here became a very sexy frontman, but that's only my opinion...
HerrSputnik 5 years ago
I remember Nick confessing his christianity around this time. That imo explains the lyrics quite well.

Somthing is missing here; it's Limahl. Despite the fact that he was the ultimate egocentric, he was the right man for vocals. Nick was not.
