@Dreamdancer11 very good analogy!! speed is a feeling too and it takes a lot, lot of practice. The masters of the strings (that be guitar, violin, or any other instrument with strings) all played fast, just listened to Pagannini or Vai .Tthey played or in Vai's case, plays with a lot of feeling.

you can buy string muter on the internet..I didn't even know stuff like that exists until people started bullying me for the bandana, which I had only as a decorative artafact..no contact with the strings...I think it is a bed choice to use something that muts the strings, because than you never learn how to do it correctly yourself.

right now i use an armband i warped around my neck.

i agree practicing with string muters is not good practice, but it can help in live performance.

some things, like the song Sevens by Guthrie Govan (check it out!) have tapping lines that are really impossible to do cleanly without a mute, so it helps for some things for sure.
