  • Who said 6-cylinder engines sound bad!

  • the record is even over 400kph.

but dunno what car it was exactly.

  • it was a wm peugeot p88 in 1988, it went something like 405kmh

  • its more around 380-ish. some were capable of hitting 400km/h

  • 20F here alone and bored and horny h

  • where can i download this video´??

  • How do people keep posting this video as a 917?!?! The video its taken from is called "Onboard 956"!!! It's in the title, as if the other clues in the video itself weren't enough!! Duh! :P

  • Yep, quite right; this is NOT a 917 but, oh boy...

  • the 917L of 1971 was timed at 262 mph on the mulsane driven by jackie oliver which still stands as the record at any circuit in the world

  • That car is absolutely nuts! I love Porsche. People say Ferrari has more passion, but I completely disagree. The 911 is the longest running sports car model of any and has become the standard by which all other cars are measured when it comes to handling.

  • This is a "956" driven by none other than Derek Bell! During the move on the next lap it is said the car does 246mph on the mulsanne (sp) strait.

  • Yes, it's 956. Moreover, we see the "new" Tetre Rouge (corner) here, and the Porsche corners as well. Not the older circuit with White House.

These 956's will be seen doing "only" about 225 MPH along Mulsanne, btw. The 917Ls of '70-'71 will have reached a top speed of about 20 MPH more (245-246 MPH/Elford ('70) and Oliver ('71))

  • Are you sure about those speed stats? According to this video in its entirety (with the narration), the Rothman's Porsches were clocked at 246mph down the Mulsanne in 1983. BTW - this clip is taken from an awesome movie - "Onboard 956," in which Derek Bell and the Rothman's Porsche take 2 laps on many of the world's famous circuits, including the Nurburgring, Spa, and of course (here) La Sarthe. First lap is normal, second is narrated.

  • The 917 had a flat 12 cylinder engine. This is definitely a flat 6, as in 956/962

  • Also none of the 917s had that banner up the top of the windscreen that says Porsche. Also when he hanges gear you can hear the turbo charger the 917K is not turbo charged.

  • That is insane! love it!

  • This is not the 917 because the 917 has a weird fiberglass body (and dashboard) so we would see the greenish dash if it was

  • This is a 956, not a 917. Derek Bell is driving.

  • WRONG!!! It's a 962. The 956 is a VW bug like car that Ferdinand and Ferry Porshe built.

  • Uh... do me a favor, and Wiki "Porsche 956"...

How's that foot taste, pro? You sure know your "Porshe"s. (9_9)

  • Ofcourse I do! They're the same chassis. And I just misspelled "Porsche", so don't give me that! >:(

  • Actyally the 962 chassi is nothing like the 956 one. =)

  • OK! I was talking about the 356... sorry!

  • Yes, I'm 99% sure it's Derek Bell from the VHS/DVD "In Car 956."

He's driving that configuration of Le Mans which incorporates the Porsche Curves, so this was certainly not taken during the "classic 917" era when the White House section *and not the still to be designed Porsche Curve section* was still part of the circuit.

Topspeed of a 917 would have been about 20 MPH more (down Mulsanne straight) than what we see here in the 956.
