I was honored to have worked with Szu-Szu in N.M-'72 for 3mo post Fat City-what a mesmerizing actress and intricate woman with a wonderful, twisted sense of humor. We couldn’t stand the director (he’s dead so I can no longer hurt his feelings and he can no longer retaliate) but he wasn't exactly liking us either a couple of weeks into shooting. We tortured him with things we would say over our radio mikes when we had a few minutes off-set but then he wasn’t s’posed to be eavesdropping - was he?
This is one of the most underrated films of its era. A friend of mine, who has a very good knowledge of film history, put me onto Fat City, as it is a favourite of his - possibly all time favourite. I will be forever grateful to him for showing me one of Huston's great masterpieces.
She is one of those performers that you can't take your eyes off her. I have always remembered and been haunted by this character she played in Fat City. i gave her a ride home (she went by SzuSzu) from an event for a friend of mine. She invited me in for guava juice (weirdly specific) and showed me her ex-husband's paintings. it's 3am, there's no one there yet she whispers, "People say he was a genius. But, If you ask me, he was just a beaner".
I must see this movie! I just watched Andy Warhol's Bad last night and Susan Tyrell was so good. I already was impressed with her in Forbidden Zone. I think i'm obsessed now!
damian, I couldn't agree more. I just watched the film for the first time a few nights ago, and her character has been with me ever since.
Right after talking about her first husband, the Indian cop killed in the line of duty, and describing her unique and deep "true love" for him, she confesses her love to her drinking buddy. She has a kind of passion that doesn't know if it's coming or going, all mixed up by drink and misfortune.
Perfect.

She really brought something incredible to this performance. She just vanished into this sad, desolate, character.
Fascinating.
