  • Your a great organist keep it up. I was looking to learn how to play and buy my first organ. Wanted to know what would be the cheapest one and is there one that is like a keyboard? I dont want a giant organ lol. If so are there any special speakers I have to get to?

  • I Live in Savannah ga, retired from west Mi, would love to see you guys here in the savannah music fest, or the jazz fest this fall.

  • You guys are FUNK-tastic! You have sort of a Frank Zappa groove going on there!

  • I'm smiling........ GREAT Love it man

  • Wow. I just discovered Organissimo on my Pandora "Brian Auger" channel and am loving their music. Bought the latest CD. I played an old white modified Hammond A, if you can believe it, back in the '70s.

  • @danpaullong Thank you! Glad you're digging it!

  • Are you from Maine and the white model A was a chop? If so, I bought and restored that organ a couple years ago, now it is owned and played by a guy in Austin TX. Check out my Hammond shop 'Boss Organ' in Somerville MA.

  • Were you using the Hammond as a midi for the Rhodes sound??? I've never seen that!

  • @tvseal0001 Yep. That's the Hammond XK digital organ and it has MIDI, so I'm controlling an external sound module with it for the Rhodes sound. Cool, eh?

  • that is cool indeed...i thought it looked to new-ish to be a B3. Sounds great though!

  • @b3groover I use Anvil Studio to work with my midi files. For the professional version(s), I gu to Hit Trax and purchase it

  • The part when you switch to the Motif, and there's just a few bars with the synthy sound, was that a mistake, or intentional? It sounded cool either way

  • Clav sound I meant.

  • It was a mistake! :) I had only had that system for a few weeks when that video was shot. It did sound kinda cool, though! :)

  • If all organ players had arrangements like this we would be stuck on You Tube twentyfour hours a day. This is equal to Wheather Report, Birdland.Great!!!!

  • Damn JIm!!!! Sounds Great Brother!!!

  • Smokin Hot! b3groover!!!!

    Lovin dat New Orleans groove:)

  • great vid, that snare kinda bothers me, but amazing musicianship

    brava!

  • Jim you are freaking amazing man. Wow. Joey has nothing on you. And you're 300 pounds lighter!

  • Is Jim Alfredson playing two XK-3's? Wouldn't he want a weighted keyboard for the Rhodes sounds?

  • I'm playing the XK3 with the XK System, which includes a lower manual that the XK3 drops into. Very cool.

A weighted keyboard for the Rhodes would be nice, but I get by.

  • Band coi controcoglioni!! W la vera musica :)

  • Great work! Excellent playing!

  • bravi fantastici grazie lipari (isole eolie)

  • There is a big difference between the two.

  • Yes a bass player would be nice, but if you have good foot work, there is nothin you can't do. Trust me, I know

  • Great stuff, but where's the bass player?

  • Hanging on the organist helping him walking ;)

  • Haha, yes he is.

  • Hello:

Please i need help about this organ, i have a XK-3 Hammond,I put Midi out from Organ to Midi In to the module ( Ropland jv-1080)or Keabord motif es 7, But not response the sensibility or touch.

All note play wihout touch. What is the problem ?

I put all the posibility from Midi Zones from the organ. but not response.

Thans you and Congratulattiosn your sound is GOOOOOOD!!

  • You have to turn on velocity sensitivity for the zone you are using. It is described in the manual. I can't recall off the top of my head how to do it, but it is one of the options and there are four velocity curves to choose from.

You must have your module set to a different MIDI channel than the organ as well.

  • thanks you, now plays ok !!

    very good

    Thanks !!

  • loool, the organ sounds like a synthesizer, because i turned the loudness of the organ off and controlled via midi the motif es rack in front of the organ. you can see it

  • You did? Last I knew you weren't in the band! :)

The volume of the organ doesn't change. I am still playing pedals and the lower manual while using the Motif via MIDI. You can layer both the organ and the rack module together.

  • VERY NICE!!

  • why does his organ sound like a synthesizer?

  • obviously he's playing a hammond b-3000. :)

  • erroneous.

    it is an xk. haha.

anyway.. the sound he uses improvising reminds of a piano..

    good job, though.

you'd better take the real deal. =)

  • I am using the Hammond XK System. I have a Yamaha Motif rack midi'd to the organ. The patch is an electric piano (Rhodes) emulation.

I hauled a real B3 around for almost 10 years. The XK sounds fantastic and is a blessing for me.

  • what's the difference between the Electric Piano (Rhodes) and a Drawbar Organ? I think they kind of sound alike, if not similar:)

  • Rhodes piano works actually as a normal piano, but instead of wire it has metal rods (which, strucked by an hammer, produce the sound). Old Hammond organs had instead "toneweels" - that is, small iron wheels rotating in front of a pickup. (Look on wikipedia for more informations, thanks ;-). Also, they produce a similar sound because they both generate sinusoidal waves, which causes both instruments to sound somewhat similar...

  • Comment removed

  • They're not even close. The Hammond organ can sound like a lot of different things depending on the positions of the drawbars and the other settings. A Rhodes piano cannot sound like an organ. Listen to some other Hammond B3 songs on youtube.

  • sono loffi! poi non parliamo dell'hammond midi!

  • this group has a great sound!

i bought all of your CDs!

Xk system sounds good, but i honestly prefer the real thing ;-)

  • i bought both cd's

  • Do they have any records?

  • Wow... I don't know what to say except amazing!

  • True professionals at work sounds great guys

  • love it!

  • very good

  • kewl beans love the funkie monky beat, All most Brubeck,,,,,, Morelleo style take 5

  • what type of guitar is that?

  • It's a Stromberg Monterey.

  • cheers man it looks like the shiz nit

  • great sound

  • Nice grove, Drumer Rocks, You guys are very Tight, Keep up the good Jams

  • This is music on so many levels I wouldn't know where to begin to explain it...

  • great combination.... hammond and MIDI Sound Bank... EP with organ has a beautifull sounds..

  • Nice Groove!

  • very cool sound--almost like rhoads.

  • YEAH, man! This is what it's all about!

  • that s klass

  • great,,,, ive been typeing papers all day and I closed my winamp app. in order to JUST listen to this video over and over again while I was writeing.

  • i recently played the xk's in a guitar center. Great sound. and to stay on topic great playing, hammond and rhodes. Keep up the good work.

  • Very funky and tight. How do you get the Fender Rhodes sound in the middle of the song? Did you have another keyboard that I missed, or did you get the Hammond to sound like a rhodes?

  • I'm playing the XK System from Hammond Suzuki, which has MIDI capabilities. The Rhodes sound is coming from a Yamaha Motif ES Rack, MIDI'd to the Hammond. Cool, eh?

  • Oh, I see. Pretty neat. Sure looks and sounds like a B3 to me.

  • The new Hammonds are very nice. Put it through a real tube Leslie (a 122 in my case) and you can't tell. They play wonderfully as well.

  • This is tight!

  • So nice, good funk, like it a lot . Thanks

  • I LOVE THIS BAND!

    JAZZ/FUNK IS SO GREAT!!!

i'd love to know more about this style, by now i only know: Herbie Hancock, Organissimo and Urbanblue

if anybody could tell me about more bands i'd love that!

  • look into soulive

  • Dr. Lonnie Smith (Too Damn Hot and his latest Jungle Groove are real nice). Medeski Martin & Wood, too. Glad you like it!

  • If I'd known I would have come home to Muskegon to hang with you guys!

Love the Sound! I haven't seen Randy since the Turning Point Days.

  • how do you run a motif rack into a hammond organ that must be the new ones

  • Yep. Its the Hammond XK System, with MIDI. Its a lot of fun!

  • Thank you "organissimo" for treating us to your fantastic gigs, I just love it. In the past, I played "Kombo's Big Blast" to death & plan on getting your CD's to add to my Hammond artists collection.

  • Thanks for the thumbs up on the XK system. It's good to know that pros are using it. Im int he UK and getting it shipped piece by piece. You would'nt believe how much this stuff is over here. I'm saving like nearly a $1000 on the XK3 alone. Thanks musicman85 for letting me hear the Speakeasy. B3groover, are you using a SE too or just a straight run into the Leslie?

  • I am running the XK3 straight into the Leslie via the Hammond Suzuki 1122 kit, which converts the 11pin output of the XK3 into a 6 pin for the Leslie 122.

Going through a real Leslie is the way to go!

  • im finally going for the XK3 system here in the UK. I know what you mean about physical tolls using the real thing. I have high blood pressure and im only 30, this is the way to go if you don't have a roadie to do all this (or 34) This with a 145 will be great for me, credit to b3groover for letting me see how it performs live. I don't trust those hammond videos on there site!

  • You will love it. This is one keyboard where you don't make any sacrifices. I've had my XK3 for almost 3 months and it was the best purchase I ever made.

  • I agree with musicmaker85. Hammond got it right this time around. The XK System is the first clonewheel I've played where I do not miss my B3. Through a real Leslie, it is unbeatable.

  • I know what you mean, there just is no alternative when it comes to Leslie's. I'll never part with mine. :)

  • Go for the lightweight Nord Electro 2 if you don't want to be moving alot of stuff. You won't even need to drag a Leslie around, it sounds so good. I would however suggest a stereo keyboard amp.

  • I owned the Electro 2 73. It's a fine keyboard, but not organist friendly, if your a keys player it's great, but I found having spent years on a console hammond it just did'nt feel right or look right, sound was good though. I like 2 manuals and pedals, and this seems the only solution to achieve that setup and have it rigid so you can really dig in! Everybody has a different approach though tright?

  • I was just thinking about the old back - but I hear ya.

  • Im actually looking forward to getting a full console organ in 3 pieces (buying the B3 style base too) I think the heaviest keyboard I'll own now is my Clavinet and it's ok back wise!

  • The Electro does sound nice, but there's nothing like having drawbars, dual manuals, reverse presets, a half-moon Leslie switch, pedals, and a legit-feeling volume pedal! The Electro is not made with the traditional Hammond organist in mind.

The XK System still weighs a bit, but it far easier to transport and move into the gig that the real thing.

  • Big foot = Good foundation. Don't worry about playing in socks, it's the only way for some people(I've seen small footed women play barefooted).

  • Oh, and one more thing: I don't see why it matters that the XK System is digital. It is a great sounding alternative to the real B3. I am currently recovering from back surgery to fix a herniated disc because of moving a real b3 for 10 years. So the XK System is a blessing for me.

Good luck finding some music you like on here. There is a lot of great B3 playing on Youtube.

  • Cool, our first negative comment! Sorry you don't like the music. I prefer the term "wheedley wheedling" myself, rather than widdley widdley, but that must be a UK thing.

I learned to play the pedals with no shoes on. That's just how I play. I change my socks everyday, though. They are nice and clean!

  • Don't worry about the socks--it could be worse. I was demo'ing an organ in a large shopping mall many years, playing in socks. A large crowd had gathered, and in good humor; lots of laughing and joking. I took it that they liked my music, cool. When I finished, I was putting my shoes back on and discovered a hole in my left sock large enough that my heel was completely exposed.

  • Mate - you need to do something about those socks. Nasty!

  • Lol? you comment the guys socks? The play heavenly and you comment their socks? lol get a life

  • I see a guy playing a digital keyboard in socks and you call it "heavenly". And you're telling me to get a life?

  • How he plays have nothing to do with what he wears. newb

  • You're right of course, oh time-honoured master. What he wears has nothing to do with all that widdley widdley widdley he's playin'. Now be a good boy and go and practise your DX7

  • So when are you coming to Indianapolis :)

  • Hmm, just wondering what that foam piece under Randy's hi-hat pedal is for... never seen that before.

  • To keep the stand from flying around the stage! :D

  • The Xk3 can be made to sound like a keyboard also? If so is that just on both the "swell" and "great" manual or just "swell". Love to hear you guys play, it is very good!!

  • Sorry, I meant is keyboard sound on "swell" manual only. :-^ Ordered your CD "Pumpkin Pie" can't wait to get it.

  • I think he just uses a midi modul to get that rhodes-sounds going. The XK-3 has no other keyboard-sounds onboard.

  • Like Fetze said, it looks like he's using a Yamaha Motif module to get that rhodes electric piano sound. You can see it on the right side of the Hammond.

  • Aw! yes, I see it now. I have a 1969 B3 with a Yamaha S90ES, would be nice to be able to do that with mine. I think the XK3 costs around $7500.00 if I remember right. (not including Leslie) I best be happy with what I have.

  • I also need to play what I have before thinking about buying something else. People ask what I did with the money my wife gave me for keyboard lessons. I tell them I spent it on a B3 and Yamaha. LOL!

  • The XK System is about $7500, yes. The XK-3 by itself is around $2000. I am using a Yamaha Motif ES Rack module for the other sounds, MIDI'd to the XK System. That's one of the reasons I like the XK System so much. It allows you to do some things with the Hammond that you couldn't (easily) do before.

I think they do make MIDI retrofits for B3s and the like, but they are expensive and do not transmit velocity, if I recall correctly.

  • That's a nice XK-System you got there. My XK-3 is being delivered today!!! Eventually I'll expand to the tradition style lower manual and traditional stand like you've got there.

  • I'm very happy with it. I'm sure you'll enjoy the Xk3. Hammond finally got it right!

  • Beautiful

  • Absolutely Fantastic! Great keyboard, guitar and drum players. Wish I could play my B3 1/4 that good.

  • Dang... I wish the audio was synced with the video... otherwise, this is just AWESOME!

  • It's synched up on my machine. Make sure you have the latest version of flash and a good, high-speed connection.

    In any case, thanks!

  • Will do... things were a little jacked on our work network yesterday. GREAT to see you have another video up... I once again watched me some Pumpkin Pie 3 or 4 times yesterday...

  • Ha! Maybe we need to start an intervention hotline! :)

  • Either that or I just need to get my C2 Refurbishment Project done so I can learn how to play....

  • As usual, VERY cool! In the process of wearing out the cd. So, get on with it and hurry out to the WEST Coast! We're waiting here in Seattle! :)

  • Nice arrangement and good groove
