A sailor's life, it is a merry life. He robs young girls of their hearts' delight, Leaving them behind to weep and mourn, They never know when they will return. Well, there's four and twenty all in a row My true love he makes the finest show. He's proper tall, genteel and all, And if I don't have him, I'll have none at all. Oh father, build for me a bonny boat, That on the wide ocean I may float And every queen's ship that we pass by, There I'll enquire for my sailor boy
They had not sailed long on the deep When a queen's ship they chanced to meet. ``you sailors all, pray tell me true, Does my sweet william sail among your crew? ``oh no, fair maiden, he is not here For he's been drownded we greatly fear On yon green island as we passed it by, There we lost sight of your sailor boy. Well, she wrung her hands and she tore her hair. She was like a young girl in great despair. And her little boat against a rock did run. ''how can I live now my sweet william is gone?
Wonderful. No, it could not be better than the ultimate SD/FC version, but there are always swings and roundabouts with truly great singers and truly great songs.
You see this is why I love music. The sounds reach inside my own emotions and I feel the anguish, grief and despair of the women who lost their loves to the ocean.
Song is the SEA taking sailors, leaving women who long. At 24 she meets a sailor-true love-Her father built her "a boat'.-She has to find him-she sails and meets all the queenships passing. She finds a passing ship & discovers his ship went down. He is gone, he was brought down, and that was the last sight of your sailor boy". She was like any young girl in great dispair--her sweet William is gone " So the sailors life turns to the woman of the sea and the woman of his life.
A very interesting version. But Fairport's is the ultimate. Sandy's voice is perfection and the instrumental which follows must be one of the finest in all of rock or folk.
A huge THANK YOU for this divine playlist ;-)))

Nice version but Sandy Denny is way beyond her.

A lovely version. See also Fairport Convention's. It's overlong, but Sandy Denny sings it at least as well as Sheila.
