She finds a passing ship & discovers his ship went down. He is gone, he was brought down, and that was the last sight of your sailor boy". She was like any young girl in great dispair--her sweet William is gone " So the sailors life turns to the woman of the sea and the woman of his life.

A lovely version. See also Fairport Convention's. It's overlong, but Sandy Denny sings it at least as well as Sheila.
