There is no welfare system in Afghanistan and little a 30 year old crippled woman can do for herself so she depends on her children to support her.
That's how the culture is. Your mother gives birth and that is the best thing she can do for you. You must look after her when she is old/disabled and your children will do the same for you.

Now they die as a result of constant drone attacks and house raids. So the man of the house is dead and the mother is left only with her children. They have no other choice. They were born before the NATO war but now live through it.

@danieldefenseM4 but a high birth rate is just one in a multitude of factors which cause poverty. by reducing the number of births you dont solve bad infrastructure, a corrupt government, bad geographical location, civil war, access to the sea for trade etc. so from an individuals point of view it is entirely rational to have lots of children as was the case in western countries 100-150 years ago. birth rates didnt decline until living standards increased but they didnt cause the increase
