Ought to be an anthem for Father's Day. The GREAT John Prine singing one of the best of the GREAT Steve Goodman. One of the few songs that brings a tear nearly every time I hear it

We should all be so fortunate to have a friend as loyal as John Prine is to the late Steve Goodman. John has always gone out of his way to keep Steve's memory alive through songs and stories like the one he told before singing this one. For a similar tribute, see John Prine's version of Steve's (and his) "You Never Even Called Me By My Name." John Prine is an American treasure.
I am thinking about Papa tonight & I miss Him and now rinning into this song is making me cry it sounds just like his life, He Fought in the Corea War and Passed Away Sept 18th 2010 R. I. P. Papa, My Own Man .. Kenneth W. Beckman Age 78 I spent his last Birthday with him No other Brothers or Sister would . I also got to go deer hunting with him for the last time
First time I've heard this beautiful and poignant song - my loss - but I intend to change this. Lovely accordian and lead guitar - an object lesson in less is more.
omfg this is wonderful. You can see that even John is moved in this version by the accordian and the young kid on guitar. I heard Steve sing this right after he wrote it blah blah blah but if this version doesn't make you cry, then you can't cry.
Steve Goodman wrote this touching song. I can relate to this in a very real way as my fater was in the Army Aircore in WW II. He died in 1975 from a heart attack.
Right before he was diagnosed with cancer. He was probably very sick when he gave this performance, but didn't realize yet what the problem was. Still a lovely, great performance I think.
My Dad died at 80. And damn, that was Way too soon.

It took several songs. Dear Abby, Illegal Smile, and Fish and Whistle, to find this one. Yeah, the big C.

Oh that beautiful song; the armonio does a fantastic sweet sound.
Prine seems to me as tired, in this video. Is this from 1999?
