  • Dang, I cannot believe people are being so rude...

Regardless, Conservatism is a vague adjective that has taken on many stigmas. It is also true just because one is conservative in their attitude towards one/or many things, does not necessarily mean they will be conservative about another.

If we expect others to be open minded about our own opinions, shouldn't we respect them by doing the same. Ridicule tends to deter tolerance and understanding,

  • Google this: 'Gordon Hodson Bright Minds and Dark Attitudes'

The study, published in Psychological Science, showed that people who score low on I.Q. tests in childhood are more likely to develop prejudiced beliefs and socially conservative politics in adulthood.

Dr. Hodson, the study's lead author, said the finding represented evidence of a vicious cycle: People of low intelligence gravitate toward socially conservative ideologies, which stress resistance to change and, in turn, prejudice...

  • 'The things we're fighting for align with conservative ideals, like marriage' (3:10). WTF?? Marriage is not a conservative ideal, or a liberal ideal. There is a crucial nuance in American conservativism that you understandably don't recognize. Conservatives HATE gays. They campaign against gays to raise money and win elections, but they have gay children and oppose gay marriage. And gay conservatives want the hard-won victories of gay liberals, but work to defeat the liberals who got us there.

  • Whatever may be the degree to which Rob understands American politics, republicans, and conservatism, we shouldn't be too rough with him. At least he shows an interest, and that's certainly not all bad....Think of how many people [esp. on youtube] that are content to simply badmouth America, and end it there.....

  • oh, i forgot to say @robmuch- you should look into the log cabin republicans, which is a gay conservative group that supports all the tenants of conservative, except they believe in equality for gays, and most notably, same sex marriage.

but i do question one assumption you make, about being conservative. the fact that you value monogamy and want to get married and have kids does not make you conservative. you have to be careful not to assign abrasive labels to such broad terms.

  • There are no republicans in Australia, so why what we do over here matter to you. You stay in your country and let us handle things in ours!

  • what does this have to do with australia? we don't have republicans here.

  • If you are interested in reading up on where the American GOP went wrong find info about how the south went red after the Civil rights act. Also Republicans would not vote for a man like Ronald Reagan in this day and age because what was the fringe 30 years ago has taken over.

  • Gay people can be hypocritical. Why not? Being a hypocrite is not about being gay/bi/straight. Being a hypocrite is more about being human. The only thing gay people have in common is their attraction to the same sex. The rest is the same. They can be as bigot as the their opponent, they can be as hypocritical as their opponent.

On conservatism, just like the meaning of the word, to conserve, to maintain what's already exist in the society. Like other ideology, it's highly subjective.

  • What being conservative has to do with your views on monogamous relationships, with your clothes, your habits, with your job? How can you define your job "conservative"? Being against healthcare for everyone, or against extra taxes for the very rich, that would be conservative! Most politicians on the political left have monogamous relationships, and still would not define themselves conservative: in any case it has not to do with being a right-winger. Would you define yourself so?

  • conservative/republican in the U.S. means something that is specific and narrow. It means anti abortion, anti gay rights, pro tax cuts, pro legislating morality, against welfare, against international aid, pro preemptive strike, anti drugs, pro death penalty, pro religion being paraded in politics, etc.

So you see, there is really no place for conservatives in the gay community. Conservatism doesn't mean what you've just said about yourself; which no one has a problem with.

  • Very interesting, well expressed. Different types of conservatism exist from country to country and within each country. In the US, the political conservatives are entwined with the religious fundamentalists. For the most part, they don't just want gays not to marry, they want us to disappear. All the GOP candidates have promised to appoint judges who would favor reversing the Supreme Court case that said state sodomy laws are unconstitutional. And all of them appear to favor state sodomy laws.

  • I actually took off the audio from the video and is heaven; he's saying: Ur my lil' princecita, let's got to the governor's ball togheter so we can dance, dance, and dance to the moonlight <3

  • In terms of hypocrisy, I don't think generally the gay community is hypocritical, but rather it is more, just, critical of conservative gays. When talking politics I always seem to get bad looks when I say Im gay and I vote Tory. There seems to be some assumption that if you're gay you're left-leaning, which has to be dispelled from the gay community, and gays of all political stripes should be welcomed.

  • Then again I'm very conservative (small-c) when it comes to things like the Monarchy, the flag, the anthem, political and governmental traditions etc. (In Canada, and probably most of the commonwealth)

  • I'm a gay Conservative (political party, my actual leanings are libertarian) in Canada. Recently my government has affirmed its support for gay marriage, and marriages for people coming to Canada who want to get married. My politics are guided by everyone having the same opportunities for success as everyone else. As a gay I find libertarian values the best aligned with me because libertarians don't discriminate, and feel that government has no place in involving itself in people's lives

  • I am gay, and my political views closely align with libertarianism. Right now, I am comfortable voting for a republican like Romney or Paul because I think the issue of a healthy economy trumps marriage equality. Yes, I want marriage equality (if the state is to be involved at all), but I want to make sure that down the road I am able to AFFORD my marriage. Leftist economic policies will not get us to prosperity but stagnation and poverty.

  • God ur an idiot, what makes u a conservative is ur ideas about social wealthfare, public education, healthcare for everyone, the idea between the public and the private, not if u dress properly, if u believe in monogamy, if u smoke or don't ( lol ), u act like a pompous bitch who doesn't know shit

  • @Relusiten Well, that's a bit rude.

  • @robmuch think about it as "tough love" and it would taste better

  • @Relusiten You spelled "welfare" wrong. Actually you basically used poor grammar throughout your rude comment. If you are going to be a condescending asshole then you should use proper spelling and grammar as you look like an idiot when you do not.

  • @MichiganGayGOPBoy Grandpa needs glasses.....dont be jelous i'm his lil' princesita :3, we put your name to our first baby

  • @xxxlee67xxxx we are one depression away from civil war in america the 99 percent wont take much more of this crap I"m not leaving cause WILLARD said too and as i write this that son of bitch Gingrich has won south carolina

  • You raise a number of interesting points Rob. I agree with much of your analysis of the situation here in the USA, but I think you may be mistaking a few personality traits and values with Conservative thinking. Conservative thinking per se is first and foremost, backward and harsh. It is unwilling to change and unaccepting toward new ideas and progress. Gay people are by default the opposite of this, because we have to be. Sorry, but GOProud is truly a rotten group of self-hating SOBs.

  • Looking back to history, however, we can see that the gay movement at his beginning was inextricably linked with revolutionary issues in EVERY aspects of life: socialism, environmentalism, free love. Just think of Edward Carpenter, for instance. So I would dare say the gay movement is, if not intrinsecally, at least liberal concerning its relationship with the past and current dominant ideas of society. More later, if you agree. RSVP. Yours sincerely,

    Filippo

  • It is sometimes a matter of point of view, because in coutry like mine, Italy, traditional conservative ideas are absolutely against gay rights, and even recognition of gays as a normal part of society. Of course I think differents opinions should be recognised and respected within the gay community, even the most conservative.

  • Hi! This video is really interesting, and I begin asking you the permission of sending you later an e-mail to further develop my opinions in relation to its content. Be that as it may, I think before expressing an opinion we should properly define the word "conservative". Do we mean by that the most common opinions among people in the society nowadays, or those which are more linked to the past (tradition, church, monarchy and so on)?

  • possibly in the third tier, which involves love/belonging (though I would argue that many of us have that even without marriage equality). Either way, there are more basic needs to be met than gay equality, and many people would argue that conservative economics are the way to meet such needs, and they wouldn't be demonstrably wrong (or right).

  • Thank you so much for making this video. It's important to talk about, because, contrary to popular belief, it IS possible to be gay and conservative. One should consider Maslow's hierarchy of needs, which suggests that there are tiers of necessity that need to be fulfilled. One's economic ideals typically revolve around their beliefs on security of property, employment, resources, etc. This is the second most basic tier. Equality falls into the fourth tier, which deals with esteem, or

  • I will email you a thread in a political forum talking bout it with mostly American perspective..

  • I'm always amazed how much you're in touch with America and in this case American politics.

  • I think the main reason gay conservatism is so taboo is because of the way the right wing responds to gay issues. while, i think most of them would support marriage equality from a point of law, I think most of the pander to their evangelical base. So, the response from the gay community, from my stand point, is zero tolerance for any homphobic rhetoric, whether pandering or not.

Don't forget their are another load of issues, like the environment and social welfare...

  • It would be sad for the gay community if it could be contained within only one party or theory. I don't think the negative comments about gay gop'rs is unique to gays: more and more we are losing the ability to speak and debate about key issues without resorting to disparaging remarks about each other. I don't think that only gay people must resolve issues regarding where they fit into society - within straight sex there are many varieties and everyone has to come to terms with their sexuality

  • you have bags lol

  • Conservatism denotes to me some sort of compromise, of conforming to get SOME rights and not ALL right as equal members of society. we cannot afford, at least here in the US, to give up even an inch of the territory won by those before us who were forced to fight the injustice of their time so we could have the sort of freedom we have today. there is still much to be done, and it is up to us to do it. not by "conservation" of an homophobic society, but by molding a new and better educated world

  • @baltashchit I couldn't have said it better myself. And true enough, "Conservative" thinking isn't ever going to bring equality to the USA or Australia for that matter. The gay community must throw its support behind Progressive movements and thinking, because backward conservative policies and thinking never leads to progress or fairness.

  • In the U.S., conservatism definitely does not always mean anti-gay. While Santorum, Romney, and Gingrich definitely do not support same sex marriage, Ron Paul actually advocates for the government to be out of both straight and gay marriage. He wants to leave the definition of marriage up to individuals.

But still, even with that said, the candidates arent really talking a lot about LGBT because this election will be won on economic policy. "Conservatism" is really a term for cutting spending

  • Hmmm if your not American how does it effect you?

  • @tidemover About a minute and a half of the video was about gay Republicanism, the rest was on gay conservatism in general, but regardless, just because I'm not American doesn't mean I can't take an interest in American politics, and we hear about it a lot in Australian news.

  • @robmuch Sorry I was kidding . I think its great you stay involved in world affairs.

  • @robmuch ok you fail to explain why OUR policies over here effect you. You stay over there and do you and we will do us over here!

  • Are you a natural brunette or a natural blonde ? I'm confused.

  • justify in my mind voting for Democrats because they're the party for gay rights when I disagree with them on almost everything else. I'd rather work from the Republican side trying to show them why they need to change their views.

  • I think there is a good way to try and go about conducting one's life and believe that it is the best way to pursue happiness regardless of the century. Further, I think government supporting that style of life through tax breaks for marriage, donating to charity, etc. is the best way for government to promote such a lifestyle in a way that helps people than through government attempts themselves.

Call me a traitor, but when it comes down to disagreeing with everything but one issue I can't

  • policies do not help the middle class or small business owners. Plus studies show that economic regulation falls especially hard on small business. I am not advocating we abolish regulations, but there is a common sense approach with the Dem's do not support for tackling regulation. The GOP is bad a lot too, but not as much so. I cannot vote for someone who puts my entire family's livelihood at risk.

Socially, I am pro-gay rights, but I hold mostly conservative views for my own life conduct and

  • As a gay conservative, I'd like to provide an explanation why it is that I hold the beliefs that I do. First off if I had a choice of any party in American history, I'd affiliate with the Federalist Party the best (the political party founded by Hamilton and Washington was unofficially part of it in his Presidency).

The reason I vote GOP is because I was raised in a small business family. I detest the economic policy of democrats. No matter their intentions my personal beliefs are that their tax

  • I actually think I'm a little "conservative" but I don't support the Conservatism as a whole, it's just because they're radicals and that's not fine that's so extreme I have some liberal thoughts too.

  • Gay Republicans - Log Cabin Republicans. Movers & shakers in the US gay rights are more liberal. Many conservative gays, but they tend not to be well accepted by the politically powerful gays. I question the judgement of voting for a party that advocates no gay rights. I call that S&M politics. Marriage is conservative - valid point that wanting gay marriage is wanting a conservative institution.

  • I very much want to kiss you......lotsa kissing.

  • Gay conservative here (not Republican, would never belong to a party). Thanks for bringing this up. And you're absolutely correct that the movement for gay marriage is conservative. It's the normalization of gay culture... completely opposite to the Stonewall generation which went out of it's way to be radical, anti-marriage, proudly promiscuous outsiders.

  • I used to be a gay republican, but mainly because my parents are republican and some of my values have come from them raising me. Now that I'm older, I'm an independent so I don't have to be on either side of the spectrum. I vote for what I believe in, not what my party tells me to. :/ Not actually a big fan of politics though. So much hate from both sides

  • I find it offensive to hear we should "work together" with republicans to achieve our constitutional rights. we will get our rights from the supreme court in time, that is IF the republicans dont add conservative supreme court judges. wake up gay republicans!

  • @sleekcartim Newt Gingrich basically wants to have control over supreme court decisions, and would be kind enough to allow 'self-professed' gay people to have friendship contracts. LOL

  • @c300v Gingrich is a total asshole. even his own party leaders speak out about that fact. Romney is a shinny mormon turd & not much less an asshole, esp with regard to gays. religious right would rather eat their foot then vote for cult leader romney. he has demonstrated his Utah backed agressive hatred against us here in MA. Obama is not much better, but at least he will appoint someone good to the supreme court. THATS where our rights are defended, NOT the GOP!

  • Thank you Rob! I so agree, it's so refreshing to hear this. I love your take on it, I agree and it's so hard to find other gay guys out there who are on this same page. Love your videos, you're awesome (and really cute!)!

  • You have ethical conservatism and liberalism and economical conservatism (capitalism) and liberalism (going anywhere from 'socialist' interventionism to marxisme/communism). So you can easily be an ethical liberal (pro gay marriage, abortion,...) and an economical conservative (i.e. against state intervention in the economy). I wouldn't say your views are 'ethically conservative' though, because I think you believe in freedom of individual choice in these matters, which is ethical liberalism.

  • Hypocrisy is the reason I don't involve myself in the gay community. I regularly see being being torn down and attacked for being openly conservative and supporting the Liberal Party, as well as a plethora of other small things. For a community that was supposedly built around being yourself, people within it take a lot of time to attack others if they truly express themselves

  • @WonderFishClyde tough to be ur gay self in a republican america.

  • I hate the idea that being gay has automatically signed me up into a secret political society. I'm an individual. All gays are individuals. We have similar goals politically, we assume, but that's not always true. As you astutely point out, "conservative" is a relative point anyway. Barney Frank has an excellent quote expressing a similar point, asking how can a movement that wants to get married, have kids, and have a steady retirement package be anything but conservative? Thanks for the video.

  • When i hear gay log cabin types say they can work from within the republican party to change it, i want to puke on their shoes. I always ask them to show what change they are proud of, never get a good example. The fact is republicans are controlled & indocrinated by the christian right & now even the freakin mormons (sickening).

  • Romney shouldnt be ANY gays candidate. I live in Massachusetts, he was the gov here when gay marriage passed. The 1st state to do so. Mass supreme court ruled it was unconstitutional to discriminate against gays (a minority) who wish to marry. Romney (a mormon) STILL fought this agressively, asking state attorney to step in, he refused. then romney conjured up a racist 1913 law to discriminate against us the best he could. NO gay should EVER vote for a mormon! research how mormons HATE us.

  • what have you done with your hair :)

  • @ismen1116 Thanks for taking the time to watch the video, you obviously got something out of it

  • I have MS. I would be screwed if i didnt live in liberal Massachusetts (romney care only thing he did right). I wanna cry when i hear the horror stories of other MS ppl in republican run states. Republicans are gonna try their hardest to kill Obama care, not because it's not gonna work, but because it's obvious they are bought by the insurance companies & big pharma. thats the republican way in the USA.

  • Here in the USA i feel that the republican party is controlled too much by the religious right. They are controlling in general & constantly push their christian agenda hard, in underhanded ways. They have tough time seperating church & state. Gay fiscal R's are one thing, but social R's are inexcuseable. I suspect those gays are suffering self hate. We as a community MUST have as much push back we can muster, conservative soc gays are DEF holding us back. luckily their numbers are VERY small

  • @sleekcartim P.S. In the USA Fiscal republicans tend to give lip service (at best) to serious issues concerning gays. Back in the 80's reagan didnt even mention AIDS during his term. This judgement delayed federal AIDS research by years! Only helped when it was discovered when ANY republican could get AIDS. I was an AIDS buddy. i saw 1st hand what republican policy is about. this history lesson is literally written in the blood of YOUR community.

  • It's important not to conflate partisanship with ideology or conservatism broadly and the Republican Party. The GOP, like any party, does not have homogenous view on all issues. On economics they range from rationalist (Romney) to interventionist (Santorum). Similarly one should not see equality as synonymous with liberalism or as antithetical to conservatism. Historically the GOP has led on protecting civil rights due to both its moral (religious) and libertarian conservative elements.

  • To me, it's a bit of a chicken and egg problem. Activism is fantastic, but the truth is when you come down to it in the end our only real tool we Americans have is our vote. The great majority of gays vote Democratic in U.S. elections. Republican politicians know this, know many gays will not change their minds, and thus don't bother to go after votes from that sector of the population. Gay people see that their needs are not being served and continue to vote Democrat, and the cycle continues.

  • The better known Republican gay group is the Log Cabin Republicans. One can be a gay Republican who is fiscally conservative but socially "liberal". I believe the Log Cabin group was part of the suit to overturn the California rejection of gay marriage. The issue that gauls most gays in America occurs when gays (Republicans) support a candidate who opposes gay rights; aka hypocrites. Obama has expanded gay rights in military & in government benefits.

  • Both conservative and liberal homosexuals need to come together and work. We are a base that most candidates now fight for. Lets find common ground for inalienable rights that some straight communities take for granted.

  • @deepbleuswimmer name one thing republicans have done for us that they werent forced into by courts etc...

  • @sleekcartim I'm totally with you but I was trying to say is we all need to come together since we are in the same boat...no more arguing. I don't get gay republicans; I an not one myself but do have friends that are and they are more fiscally conservative then democrats.

  • @deepbleuswimmer It's painfully obvious republicans dont want to "come together". a loooong history has proven this. religious right has co-oped them.

  • @sleekcartim yes I agree but there are some out there that are moderate, and I'd likr to think that it still may happen. We have a rep senator here in MA that has constantly voted moderate and there are more out there. The religious right will never changes but it's a large country and lots of changes have occurred already. Religion should have no part in government. People need to be educated that gays aren't a disease, lol

  • @deepbleuswimmer im in MA too. I dont see brown doing anything for us, he's a newbie anyways. If Teddy Kennedy (RIP uncle teddy) couldnt help us much, why do yo think Sen Brown can, or will? these guys are not gonna go against the grain on this. Were a small voting block. they will not rock the boat for us. sick of uneducated gays saying we should work together for our rights, as if they have much to do with getting our rights guaranteed by the constitution! Supreme court is our saving grace

  • @sleekcartim I miss Sen. Kennedy as well but at least Brown does favor civil unions, it's steps. MA paved the way for marriage.

  • @deepbleuswimmer oh isnt that white of him! that makes me feel "better" about him (sigh). Our movement is WAY past that option & politicians who think that way. no thanks to the obstructionist republican party.

  • @sleekcartim wait, what are you suggesting if everyone stops talking. Look what MLK did for the civil rights movement.

  • @deepbleuswimmer Im saying we dont need to beg them for our rights. They dont support us, so why do we keep going back like a battered wife?

  • @sleekcartim it'll take time, we aren't going to convince everyone and we never will. People will come over to our side when they realize we aren't bad people and are human and deserve the same rights that they have always taken for granted.

  • @deepbleuswimmer shouldnt matter if were a chorus line of hitlers! those are ALREADY our rights. republicans are & always will be fighting against us. theres no good reason (in their minds) politically, financially or otherwise to be for us. The ONLY tool we have against them is the constitution.

  • @deepbleuswimmer Until people realize that gays actually ARE 'born that way', they will continue with the thought that it can be 'spread' or 'taught' in some kind of unexplained way. Furthermore, they will lean on to ex-gay groups or churches (claiming that gay people are really straight people 'sinning') for leverage and validity of their views. *facepalm*

  • @c300v yes you're right I'm not arguing with you on that. People do come to understand. Some people are ignorant and always will be. Did you send me a "palm in my face"?

  • @deepbleuswimmer No, no I did not. Also, my reply was a mere side comment in agreement to yours.

  • @c300v oh, lol

  • Would a conservative president not push for a federal act saying that marriage is between one man and one woman? Basically invalidating marriages all over the country. Would a they NOT support laws that make bullying acceptable as ling as it is religious of philosophically based? Would they not support laws that make it ok to harass people who are gay in the work place because it goes in contrast with their deep rooted religious convictions? All of GOP nominees are full of crap.

  • This video has some of the best, well though out responses that I have ever seen for one video. That means that you have spoken well and reached your audience. I have always been very conservative in action but very liberal in thought. It has been a sad fact in my life that I have never been able to vote for a democrat as every one in my lifetime has seemed to be very disingenuous. They say anything to get a vote (as do republicians) but never deliver anything of substance. Vote you conscious.

  • "While Romney does not support marriage equality, and nor does Obama."

What *I* find interesting is that this phrase intends to imply a sameness in views altogether on gay people. They are not. AT ALL. Would Romney order for the halt in defending DOMA? Would he issue an executive order to allow same sex couples to have visitation rights wherever there is medicare available? Would he have made an "Its gets better" video? Would he NOT have veto the repeal of DADT & the Matthew Shepard Act?

  • Throughout history things like marriage have had a different meaning from era to era, culture to culture, and from civilization to civilization. From being a form of property exchange to the true love forever romantic companionship thing that it is now. So to say that marriage is a conservative value is not very accurate; not 'traditional' at all. Like one of the other comments said, it does to me seem pretty much like an oxymoron. Much like gay christian, nazi Jew, bald hair color, carni-vegan.

  • Belonging to a party or position that is basically very much against your basic rights is not a good idea at all. I could understand I guess being 'conservative' in economic issues. The term 'gay' is by no means a conservatively aligned term, so by that point gay marriage, gay adoption, and gay (insert conservative-like behavior here) would not be would not be a conservative compatible value whatsoever.

  • Conservatives and liberals are not monolithic groups with identical beliefs and values. I am a Republican, but socially Libertarian. I want smaller government that stays out of our personal lives as much as possible. I don't believe government should be in the marriage business at all - they should give civil union licenses to everyone. Marriage is a religious concept, but there's no reason that anyone can't then call themselves "married" if no one has a legal lock on the term.

  • Conservatism means to conserve the past traditions. If so, then the fact that one is gay already breaks tradition. Being conservative and being gay is an oxymoron. Being liberal on the other hand does not bind you from tradition. You are at liberty to stay in your traditions or not. For example, traditionally men don't dye their hair blond if they are brunet (you have to stay your natural color). Traditionally men marry women. if you are liberal, men could marry whomever they want.

  • An important distinction is conservative vs Republican. Unfortunately, in the US the Republican leadership has been using gay fear and bashing as a technique to win elections. Past Republican leaders have admitted doing the same thing in the past in the South by aligning with racist thought. I do feel there are legitimate conservative points of view unfortunately the Republicans have hijacked those views and aligned them with hate and fear mongering.

  • The vast majority of average p[eople in the U.S. who align themselves with the Republican Party just baffle me. If you are a woman, the GOG doesn't care about you. If you are African-American, Hispanic or some other minority, the GOP doesn't care about you. If you are Christian, the GOP doesn't care about you. If you are middle class, the GOP doesn't care about you. If you are gay, the GOP doesn't care about you. The GOP cares about the wealthiest 10% and how to make them more wealthy.

  • Gay conservatives are generally driven by economic conservatism [read: money] which gets them to turn a blind eye to the social injustices' of the other conservative people they are typically aligned with. I'm actually a life-long gay republican, but not because of money, but of family (my father was a polician, & being in his party was the only way to vote for him in our closed primary state). So I guess you could say I'm a gay RINO (republican in name only). I vote independent of any party.

  • Needing to make a distinction on political belief in relation to sexual orientation has always been a method of making past views merge with new ones. Some gays like to dance while at a bar, ands other like to have conversation. We don't divide those 2 preferences into 2 groups. We don't separate the 2, because those 2 choices aren't at odds with each other. Being gay IS at odds with conservatism (the political label).

  • by what you said i guess i have a certain degree of conservatism. I don't drink much, i don't smoke or do drugs. I see the importance of monogamous relationships and only having sex with people you genuinely feel a connection to and love deeply. But then i'm also liberal in the sense that i'm pagan, I'm not Christian (as I was raised), I believe that the world should be in constant change for the better.

  • Rob, Thoughtful, relevant. Thanks for taking the time to express your ideas. I think for the most part I am a relatively conservative person, having grown up in a conservative family. I don't agree with the ideas of the Gay Republicans, however I fully support free and open discussion. Just because someone has a different viewpoint, doesn't make their ideas bad. Diversity and creativity bring up new ideas and solutions and serve a useful purpose, whether or not those ideas get used in the end.
