However, I have traveled to over a dozen countries on 3 continents and I'd rather be in no other place. @YucaTX I'm an American born Canadian-American. I moved back to the US last year. Canada isn't more beautiful than the US. They're actually largely the same without knowing it you'd think you're in the same country, until you saw your taxes. LOL. The US is more topographically and culturally diverse, but they're both Anglo countries that have experienced rapid globalization and immigration.
Vancouver has so many homeless people because of its climate. Sure it hella rains, but when it's -50 in Toronto, Calgary, Montreal, etc, it's usually 10-15 degrees in Vancouver. There was a documentary a few years ago, and basically most of Vancouver's homeless people are from Eastern Canada and even places in the US (the American bums come for our social programs, the Canadian bums come for our weather). We basically get all the shit that other cities don't want (we don't want them either).
@cuno858 California cities like Santa Monica, San Francisco, and Los Angeles have comparable homelessness problems to Vancouver. The US has better programs to house homeless people, but you are correct in that access to many services in the US is limited to the poor and most Americans prefer it that way. It promotes ambition and a desire to get out of poverty.

I said, many Americans find their way onto Canadian streets to take advantage of our generous social programs, programs that are--admittedly--easier to access than comparable American ones. I know because I worked in a consulate in a midsize American city. I couldn't believe the numbers of American poor showing up and basically saying "they want to move to Canada." Canadians come to Van for the weather.
@cuno858 I was saying that in the U.S. social programs are generally limited to the poor and impoverished and those programs that are available are not as generous as they are in more "liberal" or left-wing countries like Canada. That same phenomenon you experienced at the consulate happens at the state offices throughout the US. The poor flock to states like California or Minnesota with more generous welfare programs, and perhaps better weather with regards to the former.

@youngpanthas09 I've been to all the these Canadian city's, your kidding about Edmonton, right? The nicest place I have seen is north of Montreal on Hwy 15. Towns in the hillside, old world charm. I lived in the lower mainland for over 10 years and can't complain about that place at all. What ever you want, it's there. I'm a long haul truck driver and have been to every large Canadian city, except east of Riviere du Loup, QC. One of the worst city's in Canada is Ottawa.
I'm born in Vancouver but this video bored me. This video makes Vancouver sound like any other ad for tourism in other cities. They only posted things to do that you can do in any other city. (Getting an apt in Milan, Italy is actually cheaper) There is no migration control between Vancouver and Honk Kong...the govt allows all asians with cash into the country because they want the "wealthy birthrate" up in BC. I walk down the streets and no longer feel Canadian as I listen to various Asian languages and see Asians almost exclusively now. They form well over the majority now in Vancouver (with student visas and working visas). Healthcare is not "free", it's $57 a month. Does not cover prescriptions, dental, or vision. In Alberta and Ontario the medical services plan is free. I went to an ER downtown once late at night, it closed at 8pm. Nice.

They're actually largely the same without knowing it you'd think you're in the same country, until you saw your taxes. LOL. The US is more topographically and culturally diverse, but they're both Anglo countries that have experienced rapid globalization and immigration.

Vancouver has so many homeless people because of its climate. Sure it hella rains, but when it's -50 in Toronto, Calgary, Montreal, etc, it's usually 10-15 degrees in Vancouver. There was a documentary a few years ago, and basically most of Vancouver's homeless people are from Eastern Canada and even places in the US (the American bums come for our social programs, the Canadian bums come for our weather). We basically get all the shit that other cities don't want (we don't want them either).

The US has better programs to house homeless people, but you are correct in that access to many services in the US is limited to the poor and most Americans prefer it that way. It promotes ambition and a desire to get out of poverty.

I said, many Americans find their way onto Canadian streets to take advantage of our generous social programs, programs that are--admittedly--easier to access than comparable American ones. I know because I worked in a consulate in a midsize American city. I couldn't believe the numbers of American poor showing up and basically saying "they want to move to Canada." Canadians come to Van for the weather.

@cuno858 I was saying that in the U.S. social programs are generally limited to the poor and impoverished and those programs that are available are not as generous as they are in more "liberal" or left-wing countries like Canada. That same phenomenon you experienced at the consulate happens at the state offices throughout the US. The poor flock to states like California or Minnesota with more generous welfare programs, and perhaps better weather with regards to the former.

I lived in the lower mainland for over 10 years and can't complain about that place at all. What ever you want, it's there. I'm a long haul truck driver and have been to every large Canadian city, except east of Riviere du Loup, QC. One of the worst city's in Canada is Ottawa.

Canada is one of the cleanest countries in the world, and we also have one of the best Health Care Systems in the world, if not the best.

(Getting an apt in Milan, Italy is actually cheaper) There is no migration control between Vancouver and Honk Kong...the govt allows all asians with cash into the country because they want the "wealthy birthrate" up in BC. @headbud43 It's a sad reality. I too feel it as well. Everyone I speak to seems to have an Asian accent. I walk down the streets and no longer feel Canadian as I listen to various Asian languages and see Asians almost exclusively now. They form well over the majority now in Vancouver (with student visas and working visas). I sure don't want to raise my family here anymore - my little daughter as the only white girl in her classrooms - growing up as a minority.

They forgot to mention the disgusting homeless rate, the sex and drug trade that thrives here, and the fact that our oceans are some of the most polluted. Vancouver is a terrible city to both live and to visit.

it's never too cold or too warm here, very little pollution and lots of wilderness for people who like hunting, fishing, hiking etc. people are generally into outdoor activities here, and in better shape than your average american.
if i had to sum this city up in one word, balance. if you're looking for stability, comfort and a pleasant visit, vancouver is the place for you.
if you're looking for danger and excitement, you've come to the wrong place, nothing ever happens here.

if your worried about being noticed or singled out, you've come to the right place. we've got gays and lesbiens walking down the streets kissing and holding hands. we got hippies, new agers, christians, muslims, hindus, buddhists, everyone just kind of blends in here, everyone minds their own business.
plus, we're more layed back here, not as stressful and greedy as eastern canada montreal toronto. we're more casual here, you don't have to be too fashion conscious.

Healthcare is not "free", it's $57 a month. Does not cover prescriptions, dental, or vision. In Alberta and Ontario the medical services plan is free. I went to an ER downtown once late at night, it closed at 8pm. Nice.

It's not multicultural, it's Chinese! The Chinese have taken over. Vancouver is nothing but an urban slum if you take the mountains away. BC is so overhyped and overrated. Look at these TourismBC posts, they show you all the pricey tourist attractions, but you see nothing of the city. 12% HST tax, inflated housing prices, and the chinese essentially own this province. Not to mention they don't show you the weather 8 months out of the year- overcast, gray, and perpetual rain.

@saddleupkelowana The problem isn't the individual Chinese or Japanese person, the problem is the SHEER VOLUME of them. There are, LITERALLY, billions of Asians 2.6 Billion Indian and Chinese alone). When you walk around the streets of Vancouver (and much of the surrounding cities), you are flooded not with multiculturalism, but with Asians. So much so, that they now form the majority.
I wonder how Asians would feel if Americans began over-populating their major cities en masse! hmm
