An interesting footnote to the percussion discussion. I read somewhere that the "shaker" we hear throughout is Gary shaking his keys while singing. And that's what it sounds like to me. A cool song and an enchanting recording after all these many years.
I will probably get hated on for this, but there has been made an awesome remix of this song.. It featured in Elementality(a skatemovie of the finest) and thats where i heard it first.. both this song and the remix touch me as never before
My bad here! I spoke with mom and Gary this week. The sessions I spoke of were not where the actual recordring was done. As posted prior to my incomplete childhood memories, the recordings were at Joe Bowles' studio. The ones I was at have turned out to be practices. Thank you for your kind words. Paula
Bonnie Guitar discovered and rehearsed this group, wrote the vocal parts , arranged and produced the record in a studio with engineer Carney Barton on the 5th avenue in downtown Seattle. This was not a home recording. I was about 7 years old when my mom Bonnie recorded this and the rest of the Fleetwood album. I would lay (very quietly) in the corner of the studio and half sleep while they did take after take to get the soft sound she was looking for.
This here is true love playing and simple this brings out so many mixed emotions and memories. Elisa you will forever be in my heart even although things didn't work out in the end, the memories still linger :)
The Fleetwoods recorded 'Come softly' acapella w/o any instruments. The backing was dubbed on later. The original 45 used a mono mix. When a later stereo 45 was issued, the same vocal track was used, but a slightly different instrumental backing with bongos was put on.
@wannawatchu66 If you're wondering, Mafia 2 is a video game based on the 40's and 50's and there's a lot of great oldies you can listen too, this one is pretty good! :)
I've always loved this song..heard in many soundtracks in movies over the years, it's nice to find it here. Ahhh it just came to me...they played this in the cool coming of age movie based on a Stephen King short story- "Stand by me"
Real catchy harmony...it's stays in your mind all day.
I heard this in Mafia 2 tonight while I was driving Joe when he got drunk at the lone star, I stopped my game after I saved it and went immediatly to this video, This is one of the coolest songs I've ever heard, its just so mellow, harmonic, and a sense of peace. 4.8/5 Stars!
This version was put out as an early stereo single release in 1959 on Liberty, which was the parent label of Dolphin (later Dolton) records, the Fleetwoods' record company. In 1975 United Artists had ownership of Liberty's material and put out a "Very Best Of" series. The release "The Very Best of The Fleetwoods" features this recording. Two my knowledge these are the only two sources of this true stereo version.
nocaro- many thks for the posting I love the song & the Stereophonic Sound Recording as it gives my 7 speakers a chance to bring out the stereo separation.
I think some percussion was added. Originally, the only percussion was Gary rattling his car keys in his pocket. Now there is also that wooden sounding thing.
It's quite possible this song may have been recorded twice around the same time since the sterophonic technology was so new many artists were returning to the studio to re-record songs they had recently had hits with...I wish I knew the whole story behind this, but it's a phenomenon surrounding many of the songs recorded from about mid-1958 to 1960.
The original hit recording did not have the bongo percussion added. Otherwise, its the same recording. The bongos were added in some later version. I don't know why or when.
This is the original version that was a hit in 1959 under the name the "Fleetwoods"...it was also one of the first hit recordings in STEREO, which was a rather new phenomenon back in early 1959.

He has such a pure, sweet voice. I wish singers of today still aspired for purity of voice, rather than complexity of music. <3
