  • he plays with soul. its hard to describe how the time is right

  • Any idea what hihats are those??

  • @EvoletChrist Zildjian K Customs I think, but I'm not 100% sure

  • That drumset sounds wonderful.

  • Such a great guy and talented drummer some one to most def. look up to.

  • get in where you fit in

  • Aaron Spears is the man! However, most of the greatest drummers can explain, or teach worth shit.

  • @mattiamusic I think thats because they have such natural ability they themselves dont really dissect playing like us mere humans do. To them its ingrained and they really cant explain how they do everything. Everything can be learned but there are very special people who elevate the art and dont really closely follow others. They create while others imitate. However I think influences are good to a point.

  • aaron spears is without a doubt one of the nicest drummers in the world

  • anyone see the 9 creeps?

  • You don't want musicians to be counting sixteenths to themselves, but you probably want to play with musicians who are on the same rhythmic level as you, because then the band can take flight. Most of the bassists Aaron plays with can hear the "1" in his phrasing without counting. I dig that this is about getting back to basics, and of course you have to tailor what you play to the setting, but there are musicians out there who dig rhythmic risk taking

  • I agree... Travis Barker is the most overrated drummer in the history of overrated drummers!!! smh

  • Where's the one?! T.T You are.....

  • ERRR...Larry Mullen, Ringo Starr..stewart copeland...john bonham..etc...simplicity and musicality........play the song

  • What snare is that? Looks like a Remo Black X on it but can't tell what DW model that is?? Does anyone know?

  • @ShadowOfAMartyrROX It's a 7x14 DW Edge Snare

  • @JustinWomackMusic Thanks for the response Justin. However, it turns out that It's actually a DW Polished Bronze snare. Aaron told me himself! I have read where he has used an edge on tour though.

  • @ShadowOfAMartyrROX Yeah, you're right...I just assumed it was his normal snare. They never really get a good side shot of it do they? lol

  • He's incredible.

  • which model the shoes?

  • His set is sick. Toms are PERFECT

  • <<<<<<goes back to the derek roddy vid

  • 0:35

"I have no idea what to play.. Here goes."

  • aaron spears tha mwastaaaahhh and he soo juicy mouthed whahaha

  • OMG... This is probably the most stupid question I ever heard. A drummer FEELS the one. He KNOWS the one. There is no way in hell you can ever explain that. If you ask a question like that, you'll just never be a drummer.

  • @Frontdesk99 I know a lot of virtuoso genius drum teachers who explain it very well. The first thing to do if you wanna become a good drummer is throw away the bullshit 'it's in your heart' sentiments and start practicing playing across bars to clicks.

  • @dandarkwing Oh cut the crap. This is not about sentiments. If you ARE a drummer, you KNOW the one without even being aware of it. You just have it. But hey, what do I know. I've only been playing drums for 35 years now.

  • @dandarkwing And I hope I don't break your heart now, but Aaron did NOT get back to the ONE in that first 'fill demo'.

  • @Frontdesk99 No, he hit the one every time.

  • @dandarkwing That is how I have learned that concept. Just work with a click track and practice playing over the barlines. Just good old hard work.

  • @331paradiddle

playing over a click and doing simple stuff is fine when just starting out. The real key is being able to piece stickings and phrases together that make sense musically.

Many even well known drummers who just play along to a click and displace rhythms don't really understand what it is all about because they are focusing too much on the displacement part and not about the actual notes.

Technique patterns and sticking patterns by Gary Chaffee -good old hard work!

  • this guy is so good that he cant put it into words when asked a simple question. So wheres the 1? Get in where u fit in. I love it.

  • Awesome

  • @Denominator9411 I have always used bigger sticks to improve. I tend to use the corpmasters because they don't put much strain like the metal sticks do. This guy Jon Adams has a good video on building speed, strength and control. His channel is drummerjqa the title is Basic Stick control.

  • Joey Jordison is still better

  • @xDeathmetalMan96x And why is he better?

  • @JesBDrum Coz hes in a real band.

  • @xDeathmetalMan96x Dude, whatever..

  • @Denominator9411

Hey man, I am a drum teacher and I'd like to help you out. Instead of looking at the model number. Why don't you look at the dimensions ? Most 5Bs range from a 0.590 inch to a .605 inch.

What I do is use the Pro Mark 5Bs (thickness .590) for practice and when I perform I move down to about a .570 thickness. This really helps with giving you control and (gives you an "on top of all your chops" type feeling ) ......hope this helps. Note that thickness is all subjective

  • Dose anyone can tell me whtat is the RIDE he was playing ?

I want to know the number of the RIDE, thank you

  • @urieowpq3304 hello...in an official site (zildjian or smthing like that) it is shown that aaron uses steve's gadd signature ride (k custom session ride) ,the large size (20'')...i happen to use that ride too ,and i assure you it's the most versatile and musical ride i've ever used...can't be 1000% sure if it is the one shown and used here but it's pretty possible...hope i helped you my friend...greetz from Greece...

  • no disrespect to aaron spears or anything.. he's probably my fave drummer.. but is it just me or does he land the 5th bar a bit to early? hahaha

  • He's an excellent drummer. But I think he needs to find his own personal signature on the drums.

  • he didn't really answer the question here....lulz

  • the interviewer sounds stoned lol

  • thats a big boy ha...got mad skills though

  • "Get in where you fit in."

  • "Theres not a particular method to it, it's just a feeling thing. You know, just get in where you fit in" <---Awesome!

  • @andrewk31 thats what she said

  • @13thfbass hahaha

  • man gotta love drumming in pink/black jordans :P god i love this drummer pure talent!

  • @TheBloodofheros There not jordans Lol. There Air Yeezys. Kanye West's nikes.

  • 0:00 - 0:20, Ben Stein interviews Kenan

  • aaron spears: beyond the cops

um yeah, let me uh CHOPS CHOPS CHOPS see?

    this guy rules though.

  • onde vc consegui esses plays alongs!?!?!?!?!

  • i think Aaron makes us all foolish if its said like that lol

  • this guy is a beast!!!

  • i've watched this section several times in the past and i cant get enough of how tasteful he is. extremely articulate and accurate, and im especially loving the snare/hi-hat exchange happening at :50-:54...MERCY! really good work Aaron...

  • Why are people bringing Bobby Jarzombek, Mike Portnoy, etc. into this? Spears plays a completely different kind of music! He's going for a completely different sound! It's like saying strawberry is better than vanilla or that Michael Jordan is better than Joe Pavelski! They all do completely different things and they do them WELL.

  • Ya this kid is great!!! but Bobby Jarzombek Still tops everyone

  • "Get in where you fit in." Great advice for life in general.

  • I respect Travis Barker, Joey Jordison, and even Mike Portnoy, BUT you guys have to respect Carter Beauford and Aaron Spears as well.

Music has always been a universal "language".

  • @weinhimer06 Don't forget Mr. Portnoy and Peart jerking off in the back. =D

  • @DevinRickard Well, you have to admit, that unlike Barker and Jordison, Mike Portnoy and Neal Peart can actually play.

  • @slashsdevil Well they can play, what their style/taste in music requires of them. Honestly though that "basic" stuff is not for me, I prefer to play all styles of music and expand. Also, if you can play a simple 4/4 beat, then it's considered playing. But in closing, I agree with you that Portnoy and Peart can play, but their style is more technical than musical; they are quite creative, and play what fits with the other instruments.

    Cheers!

    -Devin

  • @DevinRickard I couldn't agree with you more.

  • @weinhimer06

I looked up the definition of overrated and found a picture of Joey Jordison, Travis Barker, and lars Ulrich sucking Buddy Richs' cock.

  • @windexfighter77 ur mom

  • @CoolbeansNahhhhhhhhh

I almost fed you, troll. Almost.

  • @windexfighter77 Hahahaha!

  • @windexfighter77

    Hahaha, nice...

  • @weinhimer06 ur mom is overrated

  • @CoolbeansNahhhhhhhhh That was lame.....

  • @TheXrythmicXtongue ur mom dude

  • @CoolbeansNahhhhhhhhh That was better...--__--

  • @weinhimer06 Joey might be overrated but he's not a bad drummer - he's as good as Aaron but just different style and technique.

  • amazin omg he kills da drums

  • Travis Barker is a decent drummer, with a wide range, people like Aaron Spears are like gods compared to Travis

  • @jarrenh1 Aaron spears is amazing but still travis is out of the question because he sucks

  • @thefear10001 travis is good too but still ant better than aaron

  • this guy is so awesome lol

  • All you people who keep saying how beastly Travis Barker is, yall are just immature. You probably played drums in like your eighth grade concert band and thats as far as you got.

  • @Denominator9411 Dude, you don't HIT drums, you play drums. Also, he is great, but not the first one.

  • this guy is very talented. i wish i could play like him. he is ranked up there with danny carey in my opinion. but it is 2 different styles of drumming. he can do stuff danny cant and danny can do things he cant. still a very talented guy. keep on groovin aaron

  • He uses so much linear stuff for his fills thats why i sounds off at first until he brings it back to the one starting at the groove again.

  • why is there only one black guy in the crowd lol

  • Fav drummers as of right now

    1) aaron spears

    2)eric moore

    3)benny grebb

    Ohhhh yeah

  • papalita ko

  • I like him. Groove, smart and good actitude.

  • he has a really good way of explaining is techniques

  • I think he could've done a better job answering that question. I mean, l dig Aaron's playing but he could've explained metric modulation a little here and then made a point of serving the music first.

  • With all due respect, I don't think that when people mention their favorite drummer on someone else's video, that they're trying to make it a race thing (even though after a while it comes off as disrespectful no matter what race is involved).

Its more an issue that music has historically been so segregated that if you are talking about a metal drummer, it's almost automatic the guy is white - but that has more to do with what music they don't let black drummers play than a racist poster.

  • muitom bom.... very goooodddddd

  • 0:50 FUCK YEAH

  • Spears is one of the best today!

  • Kind of disagree. I don't think there are any hard and fast rules for the drummer and it very much rests on the intention of the individual/group.

  • This is an international site. Save your talk of American civil war of racism talks for the ghetto or hicksville and let the music fans on youtube enjoy the music.

  • Amazing to find talk of race whenever I go on a black actors imdb site, or in this case, a black drummer on youtube. There is too much comparing of musicians on youtube fullstop. There is no olympics in music. There is no best. Forget about the colour of your skin. If you wanted to pick on this guy, you could say he is very overweight which is much worse then if he is black or white. He's a heck of a drummer though and a good teacher too. He can play. Fullstop.

  • what snare does he use???

  • @lewismanctrecool dw collector's metal bronze snare 14x6,5

  • All of those fills are just triplets. Just get solid with a metronome and practice placing triplets around the kit.

  • his kick sounds terrible awesome drummer though

  • for real, mad people need to broaden their horizon. Though I love Adam Deitch :-D

  • great!!

  • Aaron Spears, one of the elite drummers in the business, representing the D.C. area..

  • He's got a very intelligent drumming mind. Great player!

  • bonham's snare sounds louder/bigger because that was how he played it.

  • holy, the toms sound AMAZING!!

  • I am going to reveal a very important secret....IT's NOT ABOUT RACE. It's about ability to perform in the pocket and having solid technique. okay? okay.

  • @dokaflokajoe Seriously. I really doubt that drummers wont let you sit down because you're white (directed at whoever said that). And who cares whose snare sounds better? Thats one of the stupidest things I've seen people argue over. It doesn't matter. Haha.

  • Do you have any samba clips?

  • this nigga is dope

  • aaron..you are very impressive..u sound awsome...keep it up!!

  • I am so tried of rock drummers evoking a White drummer's name every time another drummer is on YouTube. It's either Travis Baker, Jordison or the other mediocre drummers. Today, its John Bonham. Give us a brake and simply listen to the track without conjuring up & comparing these drummers to every Black drummer on YouTube.

  • I'm sick of Black Gospel groups holding auditions, and wont even let me sit down and play, Just because I'm white.

  • @69drummerdan lol lol

  • @69drummerdan thats fucked up those racist cunts

  • Lemme tell you man, alot of black gospel has more to show than substance, pride as opposed to glorifying God. The fact that they discriminate like that, when God himself doesn't and doesn't support others doing so, speaks volumes.

  • @69drummerdan wa. maybe it's because you can't play. Ever recorded yourself? try it. rock bottom's a college education.

  • @25billions watch one of my vids, then tell me i cant play. Troll.

  • @69drummerdan I didn't tell you you can't play. I told you to record yourself. The second part of that instruction is interpretation. Rest your ego and go back to school.

  • @69drummerdan oaf

  • @fnkdrmmr what you dont seem to understand is that those "mediocre" drummers are fucking amazing at what they do. They can sure as hell kick your ass.

  • @fnkdrmmr I gotta say though, I see a lotta of Bonham in Spears. But you're right, you gotta appreciate his skill and performances because he's fucking awesome!

  • @fnkdrmmr

Drumming is not a race issue. If you look for racial issues you will find them. If I go up in my attic and look for ghosts, I might hear some noises and think I am right, it must be ghosts. I am not saying there isn't racism on here, I am saying it does no good fighting about it or arguing all the time. You are not innocent either. Takes two to tango. Most of the time, people "race bait" and now it looks like I have fallen for it as well. Arghhh. More drumming less racism.

  • Listen to the Mars Volta Drummers...yo will like them (specially Thomas Pridgen)

  • @NoGoats Thank you. I know about Mr. Pidgen.

  • already into the gospel chops, hmmm..?

    jajaja

  • @fnkdrmmr you're right that this guy tops all of the names you mentioned but dont focus on the skin color. I dont think it's intentional :)

  • @fnkdrmmr oh its not just the black drummers that gets this, travis is everywhere...

  • @fnkdrmmr yeah people need to stop being so stereotypical...it's annoying you even see stupid racial stuff going on, on the news and it's pure stupidity

  • @djkells3 I'm NOT being stupid nor racist. It's a fact, every time a black drummer with a future is on Utube, these drummers are overshadowed with some "Rock drummer talk" who couldn't tie the black drummers shoes. I like some White drummers like: Porcaro RIP, Bonham RIP, Keltner, Carl Palmer, etc. I simply made a comment based on intelligent observation - not empty racism.

  • @fnkdrmmr im not talking about u imt alking about the people ur talkinga bout lol dont get so defensive

  • @djkells3 i wasnt talking about u im talking about the people ur talking about

  • @fnkdrmmr The truth is, it doesn't matter who it is. We all compare musicians against other musicians according to our preferences. Some people prefer metal, jazz, or Rock as opposed to this. So naturally they compare what they like to what's new. You do it, I do it, we all do it. As artists, that's part of what advances our craft. Black, white, green, orange, red, blue, it doesn't matter. We all do it, no matter the colour or creed of said comparison.

  • @Lycanlord378 Firstly, I don't do that. I don't compare one drummer to another. That is VERY immature. Secondly, I have seen it done on UTube for at least two years. And it's always some Rock drummer bringing up the name of some mediocre Rock drummer when there's a clip of a Black drummer. I think the problem is there is so much money funneled into rock drummers and their marketing makes them (Rock drummers) appear to be larger than life. The reality is, they are NOT - esp. TB.

  • @fnkdrmmr I completely understand what you're saying, but you should check your sources on one thing: there is absolutely NO money funneled into rock drummers. All of it goes to r&b and hip-hop drummers. A rock band gets a record deal, and the members are lucky if they get a signing bonus big enough to make this month's rent. A rapper/r&b artist gets a record deal, and the next week they have a giant house and a Maserati in the driveway; and as soon as they play a show, the band gets paid.

  • @drumguyrobc I don't think you really understand how the music industry works. When you see Black artist on MTV with the big houses & fancy cars, they are mainly purchased on credit - NOT cash. If they miss one payment, the creditors immediately seize the property. I've worked at an atty and I personally seen successful friends cry when they didn't get they promised paychecks and couldn't pay their bills.

  • @fnkdrmmr I have also toured continent-wide (on my own, with a struggling band, with a signed band, and with a superstar) and have been a part of the music industry for a few years, and have seen it completely the opposite of what you're saying. Maybe we're seeing different sides or different record companies, but do not assume that you're the only one here who is a professional musician.

  • @drumguyrobc If you go into Sam Ash or Guitar Cntr, you only see posters of Joridison, Peart, Bonham, Copeland, etc. My statement on this clip is NOT a racist rant, I 'm sick of an accomplished Black drummer being overshadowed by "rock drummer talk." The name TB always come up, why? Lastly, I personally toured with major rock groups, and I witnessed the type of cash the passed hands on the tour. Years ago, R&B had that type of success - but today, it's far and few between.

  • @fnkdrmmr Now, personally, Aaron Spears is not my favourite. I prefer the stylings of Dave Weckl and Cindy Blackman, because that is more my kind of music, though I do enjoy Aaron Spears' abilities and techniques, he is not my favourite.

  • @fnkdrmmr what does the colour of the fucking drummers skin have to do with anything

  • @fnkdrmmr You are confusing people mentioning white drummers with people mentioning massively overrated drummers. Barker and Jordison are just name panned out by people how know nothing of both drums and music. Aaron spears is a world class drummer and should be compared to other world class drummers. Skin colour should have nothing to do with it.

  • @1pigdog1 Please stop emailing me about my statement about TB. My original point was: why is TB always mentioned and compared to Aaron Spears & Tony Royster? TB can't tight their shoe strings. Stop emailing me. And please your TB fantasies to yourself. Lastly, I think Jordison is talented at what he does.

  • @fnkdrmmr evidently you are too dumb to realise I was saying Travis Barker is one of (of not the most) overrated drummer on the planet. Also, I'd like to say that it is not Barker's fault people wanna finger his brown eye.. It's the ill-educated chode-strokers that don't know any better.

  • @1pigdog1 Hey stupid. What I said, is why are we talking about TB on Aaron Spear's clip. Try to remain focused and not talk about TB, Neil Pert , and Jordison etc. when a real drum-god is behind the set. Get your facts correct.

  • @fnkdrmmr Clearly too dumb to understand my, or anyone else's point. You lose. End game. UL.

  • @fnkdrmmr i am tired of people trying to put these drum smashers like royster, spears, pridgen to the greats like weckl, smith, vinnie, and wackerman.

These guys blow and have no dynamics. This black school of drumming is horrible.

  • @themetalgod21 Look in the mirror and tell me if you have a Soul. 9 times out of 10 you don't.

  • @fnkdrmmr Where are we going here?????

  • @themetalgod21 Your statement is childish. Get a life - but you can't get a Soul. Think about it.

  • @themetalgod21 im tired of people listening to only the chops of these drummers and not going to their live shows, or even actually listening to these drummers. DO you think these drummers would just sit there and not learn all types of technique including dynamics. the thing is they don't want to sound like those drummers. These drummers that you call drum smashers are playing according to style. These drummers are actually very versatile, but their DVDs explain what they are most famous for.

  • @fnkdrmmr Its because every white drummer wishes they were black!

  • @tomdunne1 uhoh you done said the secret thing. they wish they could play like a kid that grew up in the church& his mom listened to aretha and james brown (my mom listened to Julie Andrews) &his dad maybe played organ in church.(my dad played polkas on accordian)so the fact that i can play any kind of funk blues jazz, finding"black" music in my early 20's KINDA LATE is a point of pride with me. yee dawg i aint black& i'm proud-that i acquired thru strenuous reprogramming some funk into my DNA

  • @fnkdrmmr *break

  • @fnkdrmmr I Honestly think the comparision is not just cuz they're white, it's cuz there's a lot of cunts that adore those drummers like travis or joey, those 2 are the most overrated drummers nowadays it's not a black drummer compared to a white drummer, it's cunts, assholoes comparing what they think it's the best vs something they don't even fucking know about.

  • @fnkdrmmr WTF YA TALKING ABOUT, TRAVIS BARKER FTW!!!

  • @fnkdrmmr I really hope you're not calling John Bonham mediocre.

  • @EthanDrumable No, John Bonham was great. Travis Baker is mediocre - and that was my point a year ago.

  • @fnkdrmmr Hey, I gotta tell you I am tired of seeing TB and JJ brought up all the time - way too much you tube exposrue for these guys. There is an infinite list of Black and White (and Asian) drummers who kick ass.

  • Fine. He still can't groove like Blakey.

  • @Timmyinc44 Art Blakey...that's funny.

  • @fnkdrmmr it s really funny, cuz if blakey wuz 25 today he d be playing exactly the same as Aaron. he might do a little study into swing or bop, but i know blakey would be on whatever tip was happening now, and paying, and he'd be making Aaron drool over his funk r &b chops. RIP Art. People shouldn't be using your name in vain.

  • It may look stupid but the snare sounds a little bit John Bonham...

  • Yeah right. John Bonham's snare has a MUCH bigger sound than that puny thing. His snare would have made that tiny room explode. Nothing against Spears, but no way that puny snare has the power of Bonzo's.

  • yea he's definitely more of a finesse player now..

  • im glad they had some professional calm people in the room cuz i would have been wildn out~=!

  • @maxiedobson i prolly would like go screaming like a soccer fan and streak around the room

  • @maxiedobson

it's too bad that boring has become the standard of professional.

  • It's shifting meters and phrase lengths...jojo mayer talks about a similar concept where you have "words" that are short fragments of rhythm to make "sentences," about the lenght of a measure. The graphic equivalent is translation and dialation of a plane figure. Take any rhythm and proportionally increase all the durations from say 16th notes to 16th note triplets (24th notes) and you will have a rhythm that sounds like four but played in three, and will be 2/3rds the length.

  • I love him and Chris coleman. So dynamic

  • i wish some guys could answer this question telling where they come in to the beat and how to manipulate the groove by just explaining grouplet rythms and where exactly they are starting on a preticular 16th or 32nd note and ending on a preticular 16th or 32nd notes... i wish people would explain themselves musically instead of simply just how it feels or where it comes from... :) hes so good hes got it completely his feel is great, im not bustin

just more of annylitical musical teacher way.
