Steampunk was always doomed to become mainstream from the very beginning. If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything. Without a clear moral or political motif to distinguish the genre, Steampunk was easily co-opted for mass entertainment. At least Cyberpunk had an overarching theme about corporate greed and individualism. What does Steampunk have? Well, now we have Bieber, I suppose.

Thanks are due to whoever made this, for proving a point I've been meaning to press for awhile now. Justin Bieber did not destroy, or even damage, steampunk. Whatever motive he had for using the aesthetic, and whatever he gained as a result of that decision, is none of our business. What should matter to us is that he (and/or his people) gave good money to a talented artisan and unwittingly provided us with the necessary tools to make an epic Doctor Steel video.

The first time I saw the Beiber version I thought "Steampunk" has no place in this or with him. Just cashing in on the hype. Kinda like Lady Gaga's use of "Steampunk". They certainly aren't the only ones though. My thoughts on this are "nicely done" with the exception that it's not exactly without Beiber. He's shown at least twice in the beginning (he's the welder). I "get" that he's not singing though and, I guess, that's the best blessing of all from this :)
