  • Great video. My dog can do just about all the typical tricks now so I'm always looking for new ways to challenge her so this will do it. The big problem now is where am I going to get big books like that?? Maybe I can last a computer on its side and start stacking laptops on it or something.

  • Yes, I like this. I've got a great 5 year tri-colour collie and we do lots of clicker work and shaping - like all working dogs he loves to use his brain. We're going to give this a go........should be fun! :-))

  • Great job!

  • cuuute! my dogisnt agile or young enough to do this heh. but when i get an aussie someday ill be sure to teach him this!

  • TYVM that was very easy way to train. I will try this on my baby too~

  • 4 people couldn't make their dog do it :)

  • Now the clicker in this video looks useful. Nice tutorial, I'm going to try this on my puppy. Thanks! (:

  • @lbxgreen depending on how old your dog is you may want to hold off training this for a while or only train it to a couple of books height, I wouldn't attempt to train a dog younger than 18 months to 2 years a full handstand as your dogs body may not be developed enough to do such a physical trick. there are loads of other balance tricks and back leg targeting tricks you could train a really young pup though, back leg lifts are a fun thing to start with :)

  • @zsianz1 Oh, thanks for the tip! Since my puppy is only 3 months haha

  • @zsianz1 what do you mean by click when she walks on the book?

  • border collies are the best

  • Thank you! Okay sorry, but i have another question. My dog climbs the books and does not go backwards. I taught him to go backwards and he learned but he avouded the books. Then when were practicing he'll get lazy and go lay down and not listning so I have to start over with one book. Lol what do you suggest?

  • @MackenzieMills89 you're doing the right thing, just go back as many steps as you need to for your dog to get it again, sometimes you need to keep going back, maybe go slower, I would recommend going VERY slow with this trick it you practice every day then only add one book a week, this is to build up the correct muscles. keep sessions short, between 5 and 10 minutes so as not to strain your dog. also check out my newer video on this as there are many more tips on that one :)

  • My dog goes on his books but he sits with his back legs, and does not stand. Will he still learn?

  • @MackenzieMills89 I think it will still work but you may have the problem of them putting too much weight on their back legs, see if you can get to the stage of the wall (remember to go very slowly though!) and see how he does with that :)

  • Great vide, thank you for sharing it's great you showed the step by step instruction... my little shy dog is going to take longer, but it will definitely work, I think I will give it a try!!! :D

  • it going to need a lot of books

  • Thx! My dogs are quite large ( Scottish Deerhounds) but I'll give it ago and maybe get back to you!

  • cool, is this harder for bigger dogs or will they be able to do it?

  • @Katycatkins123 yes it does seem that the bigger the dog the harder they find it but if you go very slow (no more than one book a week if you work on this 2-3 times a day for 5-10 minute sessions) then I can't see the harm in giving this a go :)

  • She's doing this with a Border Collie, one of the smartest dogs out there so it's easier i suppose...

  • I've being trying to teach my dog this for ages but she still wont do it:. She is too nervy. Any tips?

  • @bckennels what stage are you at with it? and what is she nervy about do you think? I also have a new video on this that includes some extra tips that you could check out.

  • @zsianz1 I'm still trying to get her on the book, I praise her on the book, then when she gets on I do the clicker and reward her, but then she lies down and refuses to move. She came from a puppy farm basically and she is scared of everything so I think I understand why.

  • @bckennels how is she when you train her other tricks? is she scared of the sound of the clicker?

  • @zsianz1 I don't usually train her tricks, she only knows Paw,Other,High Five,Kiss,Fight, and 2 more. She used to be scared of it but not really now. X

  • nice..

  • I think this video is great showing the different steps, and I think you are amazing trainer and Holly a wonderful dog :-)

  • Hello,

Im training my border collie this trick, she is fine with putting her feet on the books up against the wall, and were getting quite tall in the books. The only thing is that she wont lift her rear end to put her feet on the books. She climbs on the top of the books and steps over the front into a 2 on 2 off position. How do I teach her to lift her rear end onto the books

  • @MayHazza Have you taken a look at my new video on this? it gives some extra ideas :)

  • I have a border collie, and i am struggling to teach him this. He wont stand on the book. I have to physically put his feet on the book. I have been doing this for almost 1 month now. I need help! Please!

  • @Girlyy4 please take a look at my new video I just posted on the walking handstand as it has more information in it. don't manipulate your dog into standing on the books as your dog will never learn this way, you have to encourage your dog to place its back feet onto the book by luring, click the SECOND your dogs feet are on the book and jackpot with the treats even if your dog put its feet there by mistake. start with something much larger than a book like a rug if you're having trouble :)

  • how long it takes to train?

  • thanks ill try teaching this to my tiny chihuahua >_< oh i see a webkinz cow!! at 2:24

  • going to try this with my jack (: he is verry energetic xd so i'm gonna start to learn him trichs and i think he's gonna love it :D but i think i must buy a clicker before i start ..

  • do you think you could do it with any sized dog like a yorkie?

  • @PoopieandChicashow I think it would be worth a go with a yorkie for sure, small dogs seem to find this easier in fact so you might be lucky :)

  • Is it very hard to learn?

  • @TesselAndSybil some dogs find it physically much easier than others and some dogs just can't physically do it, but it's not very difficult to train.

  • Awesome dog and awesome trainer!!! You are so wonderful for posting this!! :-)

  • Super tutorial!

Teddy is nearly there ;) I used your video a month ago to get us started.

  • When i tried to teach my dog... he egnored the books and , just ... went to another edge... :''(

  • sweet progression! Thanks for the ideas!

  • I have this, but cannot get him to walk to me doing the handstand??

  • do u think i could do ti without the clicker?

  • @DoggyChannel sure, but you will need treats. you should use a marker word such as "yes" in place of the click, make sure you say it the same each time though :-) I must say I find the clicker makes it easier but it's not a must.

  • @zsianz1 thanks =) ill try i will get back to u if it works or if i have problems =D

  • I'm going to try this trick w/my BC Sarah. Thank you for taking the time.

  • That's excellent. I've often wondered how they do it. You make it look so easy, Thank you x

  • you think i can teach my gsd this? hes 15mo

  • great tut

  • SO much fun! I am going to try to teach Sophia how to do this !

  • I was wondering how. Great. Give me a couple of years? After this the possibilities are endless. Thanks for sharing.

  • I love it well done. I wish my dog could do this she is a golden retriever but is comin up for 11 years old and has a hip problem so i don't think it's fair trying to teach her to do it. We might be getting a rough collie puppy soon so i could teach her that. Once again well done and a think u should make it into a dance and go on britians got talent simon would love it he is always looking for dogs acts he said he wanted one to win or a new lassie. xxxx

  • @MsPonymadprincess aww, yes you should try this out if and when you get your new pup, remember to wait until its well over a year old though for this trick :-) hehe, I would be too nervous to go on BGT I think! I wouldn't like the thought of the dreaded 3 Xs! haha! xxxx

  • loved the dog

  • holly is beautiful and unvelievably obedient..way to go..!! LOVE IT!! <3!

  • soo cool...I'll try it with my dog...

  • I am clicker-training Nana to do the handstand and we have run into a problem:

Because I have trained Nana the "Back leg trick" first, she tends to raise one leg before the other. When I ask her to back up onto the large pile of books, she waits until she has gotten one foot on perfectly before raising her other foot off the ground. For this reason, I cannot transition from the books to the wall. Help?

  • @NanaBorderCollie I had the same problem with Mabel, the answer is to train it in a different room that you trained the leg lift. also maybe even use something different to the books to back up against. I find that all my dogs have done the single leg lift first though, it has always sorted its self out in time. make sure you JACKPOT if your dog does do any little push up with both feet at the same time, however small. final thing to try is a sloping prop. hope that helps a little!!

  • I can see you really like reading sian !!!!! Lots of books, but they can be helpfull sometimes..........luv you dogs. kisses to hollie mabel and vinnie

  • Cool thanks :P

  • I love it!! I am teaching my border collie this! How long did it take to train??

  • this took many months to train as you have to let the dog build up their muscles for this trick. go slow and little and often is the key to success with this trick :-) best of luck and let me know how you get on with it.

  • that's so great love your dogs, but mine the most, of course!

I'll try teaching my dog to do this...

  • woo-hoo! nice work. i am so trying this out. good tutorial.

  • Good work with your Border Collies. I am training my Border this trick and I have a question: What verbal cue do you recommend for the handstand?

  • I personally use the cue "hands" but I have heard people use different words for this. a good tip for thinking up cue words is to use a thesaurus :-)

  • sian,do you have any tips on teaching your dog to be clam with your other dog?i need help before monday!

  • Yeah, I have tried the arm, and I have to get really close to the wall because she doesn't know how to do it without the wall!

  • Awe, Holly is amazing! I wish I could get Izzie off the wall eventually, but I don't really know how!

  • have you tried having Izzie go against your arm? another idea is to train her to do it against a door and then open the door so as she can still do it in the same spot. make sure you do lots of work on getting her to do it in different locations too so as she doesn't have to have THE wall that she learned on. hope that is some help.

  • Ah! Trying to teach Kota to do this and I'm having real trouble convincing him that he has any back feet! He just doesn't seem to get what I'm clicking for.

*sigh* Patience I suppose. Not all dogs can be as amazing as Holly and Mabel!

  • ah, it took them a long time too!! I'm sure Kota will get it soon. Holly and Mabel both enjoy this trick now that they have learnt it. you're a great trainer and I have no doubt you will get there very soon.

  • That's really fantastic. You have a lot of patience and it has paid off big time with your dog Holly. A friend recommended your tutorial over the others on YT as being the best one for training a dog to do a handstand. Thanks so much for this great video!

  • aww thank you! and a big thanks to your friend too :-)

  • I think you guys are amazing :) you have certainly given me some awesome new ideas to try with my heeler pup

  • Yep, you were right. Nice. I'll be subscribing.

  • aww that's awesome :-) thanks so much :-)

  • Really Neat !!

  • love it ...next trick i am working on now..inca is at the point where she will go up against the walls in the field..now just got to lean her to push off and balance. she did do it a couple of times tonight.......so not long now before she gets it ;0)

  • Our Miniature Dachshund (10 1/2 mos old) was able to graduate from the stacked books and was able to go to the wall and suddenly just quit the whole idea of handstand. He just shy away when asked to do the trick - even with a select treat... please advice... We were so close... In the meantime we just quit the session all together... for now anyways...

  • my reply is a tiny bit over the limit. I will send you a quick message on this.

  • Hi with your dog being a long backed breed my first thought/worry would be that it hurts his back. Please have a vet check him out before you continue to try this!

  • Clever girl Holly...Meesha x

  • Thank you very much! Great vid!

  • Thanks and nice vid.

What are you using for her treat???

  • I use small pieces of real meat cut into pea sized pieces. I find that this works better than dog treats. you can try out all different things and see what your dog likes best and then use that :-)

  • i think that is our problem.you see,taz cannot eat lunchmeat because.....well....his stomach just cant take it.we use tasty, chicken flavored treats cuz he can't eat ANYTHING soft:(

  • omgee thank you sian and holly sooo much!

    lyb. xxx

  • is there a cue word you say to your dog for the handstand?

  • I say "hands" but of course you can say whatever you wish :-)

  • Very cute vid. I have strated to teach my dog that too

  • Cool...I am going to try to teach this trick to Pheobie. Maybe it will work, I hope it does :)

  • good luck with training it :-) message me if you get stuck.

  • omg such a clever dog ur such a gd trainer

  • aww, thank you! Holly sends you hugs!!!

  • So AMAZING to see a dog her size do this! Good job!

  • I tried to teach handstand to my friend's dog, because I don't have one. She's really smart golden retrievr but she won't do it by herself without the books. What shall I do???

  • this takes a long time to train so it depends how long you have been stuck on it. is the problem getting her to go up the wall? if so try stacking the books so high that she can't get her back legs to the top but just rests them on the sides. go very, VERY slow with this trick though :-) then you can try just resting a few books there and the idea is that she will reach up higher because she will be used to going higher and then you can click as her back legs reach the wall. hope that helps :-)

  • Thanks for this great tutorial and for mentioning how long it takes, not only to train but also that the dog's muscle mass must also catch up to the dog's mental ability to do this. This way, your dog is properly conditoned to physically and safely be able to do this. Good job!

  • I was recently given a Pomeranian that does a handstand while peeing. Maybe I can teach him to do a handstand on cue. Thanks for the video!

  • Thanks so much for this video. It really helps SO much to see it broken down into all the steps. I think I'm guilty of rushing my BC too often, because she's so brilliant. But then she ends up frustrated sometimes. So thanks for the inspiration. I'm the one that still has so much to learn about training - she can learn anything! We're definitely gonna give this a try.

  • haha, I think we are all a little guilty of that when we have a dog that loves to learn :-) my dogs have trained me many more tricks than I will ever be able to train them :-)

  • Comment removed

  • awesome job with the handstand, glad to see you worked your problem out :-)

  • Nice video. Just what I was looking for to teach this trick to my BC.

  • my dog wont put her feet up on the books. she just sits down in front of the books. how shoud i get her to put her feet up?

  • try making a game of it with the book on the floor and see if you can get her to put a foot on it without her knowing she has done it, as soon as her foot lands on the book click and treat. it doesn't matter if the first few times she does it she doesn't know what she's done, she will get the idea if you keep on at it. hope that helps!!

  • wow that was great i think i may try the book methord how long did it take you to teach her i have a jack russell terrier female and iam gonna be trying this tommrow

  • hey, youtube wouldn't let me post my reply so I'll send you a quick message :-)

  • AWESOME video! I love how you break it down step by step! This is one trick that I haven't attempted yet w/ Jasmine, but probably will in the future. THANKS for taking the time to make this video! :)

  • ok, how do you do it?

  • Wow, that´s amazing!

  • .... She's 4 months old and is a american stafford/german shepherd mix and can bite REAL hard...i can't wait for her to calm down after doing a trick because it ruins the timing and she thinks the reward is for being gentle and not for the action i klicked : / and throwing treats for her on the ground is not an option because i'm teaching her not to eat stuff from the ground.(she ate something outside and ended up sick for 2 weeks). I hope you have an idea..Thank you :)

  • if you want a quick fix then try giving her the treat on a plastic spoon or something like that. the long term fix is to persevere with the take food nicely training, if you haven't done so already take a look at my video on taking food nicely, build up to harder and harder tricks but this will take lots of time, also when you are training something new you can click for calmness also. mail me if you are still stuck.

  • wow this is amazing and your dog is so beautiful...i love all of your videos and your collies =) i was wondering how do i get my puppy to take food gently?she knows it.We practice gentle every day.She even takes little tidbits from my lips-gently but whenever i teach her new tricks she gets so excited that my fingers end up all scratched up and bitten..this frustrates me so much that i send her to her place and give up on the trick.

  • Every Time I Ask My Dog To Walk Back On2 Th Book He Sits Down Just Before Th Book Or He Curves Away And Misses The Book. Ive Tried Using A Wider Book So He Cant Miss It But Now He Just Sits Infront Of It. ???? x

  • I'll send you a quick message on this as youtube won't let me post my response in full.

  • im so gonna teach my dog this too! Just curious though, what command do you use? I do agility to lots of commands seem to clash with others I already use lookin for suggestions of words or phrases i can use :-) xx

  • I use the cue 'hands' a tip for when you run out of words for cues is to use a thesaurus! haha, it works for me when I can't think of anything :-)

  • I love this video, thank you for your help!

  • no problem! I'm so glad you like it :-)

  • Amazing.

  • hehe, thank you so much :-)

  • Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge!

i have learned my Huntingterrier the handstand after seeing your video. Today she stand for the first time without the wall for a half second!

    best greetings, Natja

  • Oh wow! that is so amazing!!!! well done :-)

  • Awesome video

It's so cool to watch dogs doing a handstand.

I'm going to teach my pumi puppy that, but I'm going to learn her to walk backwards first :) She is already takeing a few steps :)

  • that's awesome! let me know how it goes :-)

  • wow! I love your videos! Especially this one! How long did Holly take to do a handstand

  • Hey! thank you :-) it took many months to get to the stage she is at in this video and she is now taking a couple of steps on her front paws which took many more months. the idea with this trick is for the dog to build up all the right muscles to taking it super slowly and little and often is the way to go for this one :-)

  • omgosh I went searching for this very trick this morning :) I am starting to try :)

seeing all of your videos is inspirational :)

thank you for sharing your knowledge!

  • Hey, I love your videos!! my lhasa apso is doing great at the wall handstand and sometimes even without support but i cant get her to handstand on my arm.. any advice please help =DD

  • ahh, youtube won't let me post my comment so I'll email you about this :-)

  • This is just so smart. Awesome job, and thx for the video. Do you know what kind of dog is best teaching different kind of tricks? Btw what dog is Holly? Thank you.

  • I've been teaching my Toy Xolos this trick as well... one just started and the other one won't do the handstand if I remove the books or if I try to put my hand as support.

    What can I do?

  • Hey, the books should be right up against the wall for training. The dog likes the comfort of having the books there so first thing to try is propping a book up the wall or using something very narrow to try and get your dog up there, if that doesn't work then you are going to have to think about building a ramp which should be pretty easy. mail me if you still have problems.

  • Thanks for the advice!! I guess Maya needed more practice because yesterday she started doing the handstand everywhere!! And today she started to do it without support, she don't last long but she is geting it =D

But my boy, Tikú don't even want to step on the books, not even one!!! ¬¬ We'll keep trying!

I'll upload a video of Maya so you can see her progress, she is going so fast!!

thank you so much for your videos! I love them!

  • Oh wow! that is so wonderful!!! yay!! just a word of warning though about doing it without support, it's wonderful that she is offering that so soon but do be careful as the dog needs to spend lots of time building up the right muscles for this trick and there is a chance they could hurt themselves if they do too much too soon so you might have to force her to take it slower! I would totally LOVE to see a video of this, post it as a response to this video if you you would like to :-)

  • VERY cool! Not as difficult as I thought it would be! Can't wait to get my BC!

  • Great trick, Holly is such a beautiful BC!

Can I ask you a question?

I have been teaching my BC mix this trick, and he has it down pretty good so far. I have the books/magazines up very high to where he can barely reach the top. I tried to remove the books so he would have to jump onto the wall, be he keeps on moving back to find another object to put his back legs on.

How do I teach him to put his back legs on the wall?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

  • cool. ok the books should be right up against the wall for training. The dog likes the comfort of having the books there so first thing to try is propping a book up the wall or using something very narrow to try and get your dog up there, if that doesn't work then you are going to have to think about building a ramp which should be pretty easy. Do you know what, email me if you can't get anywhere in the next few days and I'll make you a video.

  • AAAWWEESSOOMMEE..!!!!XD

  • si señor que bueno

  • That was so AWESOME and yet so simple!

    ITS EVOLUTIONARY!!!!!

Now all you have to do is to entice her to walk on two legs !!!!!

  • hehe! thank you!! and yes, walking on two legs is a work in progress, she only does 2 steps so far but we are getting there and her balance is getting much better now :-) thank you for your lovely comment :-)

  • For some reason this always cracks me up when the dog put their butt up the wall... We had a terrier that would do that when she went potty (I have no idea why!!!) and it just reminds me of walking her down the street and her suddenly putting her hind legs up a fence. Heheh. Great video though! The hind legs is tricky for me but I am understanding it better with your videos :) YAY

  • haha that's so cute!! I love how some dogs seem to be able to do this with no training, it's really taken Holly an age to be able to do this! I'm so glad that my videos are a help and do mail me if you have any questions :-)

  • very good video. I am going to try this.

  • amazing!!!

  • I will try to teach this to my dog someday :)

  • cool! you must let me know if and when you do start training this :D

  • Yep..

do you think I could teach this to my dog when she will be around 9-10 weeks old?

  • No, I'm afraid this is one to wait until they are around a year old before training as it requires your dog to be developed before you begin. You could be looking at getting your pup to back up onto some books at around 6 months but don't make the books very high (like 2 or 3 books) and then you could start increasing the books by, say, one a month until your dog is old enough to have a go at the handstand. Out of the other tricks on my channel this is the only one to wait a bit for though.

  • Thankyou, love it. THink it will be a long time till we are ready for that but it is so great to see what to work towards.

    Lovely dogs too

  • aww, thank you so much :-) I bet you will be ready for this sooner than you think :-)

  • ok sure! i will comment on ur vids if i have any questions or anything else!

  • ok thank u sooo much cause im teaching my toy poodle that trick and i have gotten to the point of him lifting his legs up in the air and using my arm as a support...... i will try doing that!

if u want u can check my profile and see my vids

  • do let me know how it goes and get in touch if you have any more questions. Happy training!!

  • how long did it take u until she was able to learn how to do the handstand with out ur hand?

  • it was a long time, going between the wall and my arm took a while but to do it without my arm took quite a few months, because it's a physical trick rather than a mental one it takes time for the dog to build up muscles to be able to hold them selves up. But if you don't rush it and take it slow it will happen one day, try training it in heaps of different places too as I found that helped push it on.

  • omg, thats awesome!

  • Thank you so much for posting this! ive been wanting so much to find a video on how to train to handstand for so long now! I suscribed!

    ~Emma and Sophie~

  • Great job!!

  • thank you so much :-)

  • the dog is fuck!

  • that was fantastic! how many days of training?

  • Thank you! well I trained this off and on for around 9 months, it takes a while as your dog needs to build up muscle to be able to hold its self up. it didn't take very long for Holly to get the idea of what she had to do though it was just a case of going slowly so as she didn't hurt herself!

  • I wonder if my 9yrs old dog is able to learn such complex things.

  • You could certainly get some very advanced behaviours, the only concern would be that the handstand might be a bit Physically difficult for an older dog, but there's no harm in trying :-) why not check out my other videos for some more ideas on various difficulty levels of tricks :-)

  • ANOTHER *****5-TRULY MARVELLOUS..HATS OFF to you guys
