Thanks for defending Collins there DrMorbid. I rather liked hearing all those rhythms happening at once, cool stuff and you're not gonna find many people in the world who could do it. I think the fact that he does restrict himself to only the drums he needs shows a lot of maturity. Grant Collins is a beast of a player.
Dave Weckl, on the other hand, is just a master, maybe THE master. He encompasses so much into his playing it's ridiculous, never ceases to amaze me.
What's with the bashing of Grant Collins (as you call him "the third guy" despite the fact that his name is clearly shown)? His solo was very different from the others and you obviously didn't get it. It was based on an ostinato, kinda Terry Bozzio-ish, very demanding - coordination-wise. But obviously when the solo isn't completely generic, based on catchy groove and full of rapid speed rudiments, ignorants mind don't get it.
Grant Collins has fantastic coordination, and thats his bag:)this clip is not a good clip of what this guy is capable of.marco minneman lists grant as an influence on his playing.
I say checkout his CD,sit with it and work out how complex it gets. This clip is just baby steps for him,its a shame they chose that section.Grants playing is coordination based not vinnie chops :)
but there is room for all styles, the drum police wont come round and lock you up for
I agree MisterB747. The 3rd guy with the baseball cap is lame. I love these guys who have a ton of drums and cymbals and can't play them. Then you have a Buddy Rich or Joe Morello with the 4 piece who can hold their own against anyone. And what was that crap at the end of the baseball cap guys solo? Wow nice 16th notes there that aren't even smooth.
The Omar things great, be patient at 1:38 it takes off. I like the way he really enjoys the thing. 2nd drummer, Weckl is just de maestro. Nuff said. The 3rd guy, baseball hat back to front, yaaaaawn. No soul, no feel no point has that sort of coud of playing by numbers, like a 6 year old might do. Sort of Peart like but more dull. Ngudu is ok, but really nothing to write home about and Alex Acuna and Erskine is listenable. Next
if you think he plays like Purdie, maybe he just wants to dedicate it to Purdie as the one of legendary funk drummer like himself, but it doesn't mean Omar wants to be a Bernard Purdie, right?
Omar's no Travis Barker but that's OK we can deal with it. We can hang. Where he does jam is on the cha-cha type drumming.
