How could they tell if the animals that had part of their brain removed were actually asleep or not?

Scientists removed the part of the animals brain responsible for paralising the muscles during rem sleep?!? And the conclusion of such experiment was exactly the one anyone could observe those animals doing at any time in wich they would be in rem sleep!!!! Totally unnecessary experiment = surgery!!!!!!! Are those scientists or butchers?!?!
