actually the worst sh movie ever was Batman, 1968..worst comic movie ever was Barbarella. The Spirit would NEVER do a round house kick. He'd uppercut and maybe just...well, KICK! The Octopus always works undercover using a cohort to do his dirty work. The Spirit's outfit is BLUE not black. crap errors like these caused the flick to be discarded by the fans before it was even released.

Really good review. I also love this movie. Yes, it sucks - but in a good way... like Anaconda, or Resident Evil: Afterlife. I am glad I came across this. Kudos to you. ^^

Actually, if you listen to Frank Miller in the behind the scenes feature it sounds an awful lot like he intended the film to take itself seriously.  At least that's the impression I got. Unless he did think he was being serious and because of his inexperience as a director it had the exact opposite effect. I like watching the movie anyway because it does have some interesting ideas going on and it reminds me of what can go wrong when adapting someone else's work so I don't do the same.

Just like with The Phantom I can't get myself to watch this movie. I love the comics and some of the reason is because of the style and humour. The style of this film doesn't seem to have any trace of Will Eisner at all, I was terrible disappointed when I saw the trailer.

The Shadow is an awesome movie because it's silly, sly, funny and clever and doesn't take itself too seriously. The Spirit sucks because while it's silly it's not charming. The Shadow is corny yet immensely charming and it never feels awkward. It suceeds on it's own terms. The Spirit is nothing BUT ham and cheese and the dialog sounds like a collection of late night monolog jokes that failed. BTW I loved the shadow. It was one of the first good superhero movies, the first being Swamp Thing

u know, my problem with this movie wasn't the fact that it didn't take itself serious, it's that I started doubting if I was laughing for the right reason.

allow me to explain. yes, you will laugh A LOT watching this. and there's some really cool scenes, and it has indeed a lot of style, and a lot of thought put into it. but sometimes, I start wondering if what I'm laughing at is at the nonsense of the whole thing, or just bad directing and scriptwriting.

and most of the times, I came to the conclusion it WAS the bad directing I was laughing at. Frank Miller tried too much at being over-the-top, and having a vintage comicbook feel to the whole thing. it's just... too much. it just looks silly, and it shows exactly why it's hard to translate something from one genre to the other. look at videogame movies... 99% suck!

some things just don't look good made with real people. Take Morgenstern's way to walk, for instance... it does look vintage-y, but it also seems stupid. period. and the whole story goes pretty much the same path. waaay overboard.

and finally... if only the movie made some sort of justice to the source material, maybe I could tolerate it. after all, the Spirit was sort of wacky.

but given the liberties Mr. Miller took when writing the script, I doubt even Spirit fans will enjoy it. a shame.

Do yourself a favor, you have to riff this film like the cast of MST3K when you go to watch it. It is the only way you can truely enjoy the film. It is that bad. It would take me too long to list how bad the film is. But, here's an idea. One fight scene has the Octopus and Spirit beating the crap out of each other. At some point, the both of them get tired, shake hands, and all but say to each other "See ya on Tuesday." WTF!! What kind of fight scene is that?!

Your thinking too much of old comic book style when your talking about movies like dark knight not actuly being comic book movies. The later edition comics seem like an actual inspiration to the dark knight film, with there dark and urban style. So dark knight was still a comic book movie it was just done more raw like the newer comics (less cheasyness) The spirit comic was always silly and they made the movie that way too, just too bad I always hated the spirit comic book.

Good review! First I have seen without an all out attack on the director actors and everyone associated.

I feel the lead guy was excellent, i mean if he actually meant to make the Spirit a 1 dimensional character that is genius.

Like the guy was killed, came back, found he could never be with the people he loved again, all he had was his cats. He would be a flawed if slightly strange and likable super hero!

Great job as always Josh. This is going to be one of those movies that ether you hate it or you love it. A possible cult classic. I have not seen this one yet for 2 reasons. 1. A lot of critics hate it. 2. I'm poor and cheap. I agree not all comic movies should be serious. As long as the movie has the comic book's Spirit(pun intended)then it is fine with me. I far as I know this comic is suppose to be cheesy.
