Yeah...it's true that by the end of my junior year I had all of the necessary credits to graduate. But because I had no "required" classes to fit into my schedule senior year, it allowed me to choose classes that I was interested in; things I actually WANTED to learn about. I took some difficult subjects that last year, and ended up with the best grade point average of any year in high school...schools should look at offering more varied subjects, not axe senior year.
I am so with Cenk on this one. This was posted a little over a year ago, during my senior year, and I wouldn't trade it for all the money in the world. Yes, I stressed out the first semester and then slacked off the second half, but isn't that what it's all about? Everyone's entitled to their opinion, of course, but I wouldn't want future graduating classes to be deprived of that. SCHOOL IS COOL, I'm in a college program now, and afterward I'm going for my degrees. I value education; I admit it.
12th grade should be optional. A lot of the kids who want to go to a 4-year school are there because they need the extra credit hours to get into college; the rest of the kids are just there because they have to be. They're not really learning anything that they actually need to succeed. Let them move on with their lives, learning a trade and whatnot.
We talked about creationism in my high school. We learn about Egyptian, Greek, Nordic, Jewish/Christian, and First Nations creation myths, then we learned about Australopithecus Africanis, and its journey across Africa on the path to becoming Homo Sapien. But you have to learn it all; not just one creation myth. Learn a bunch of creation myths, and evolution, then let the children decide based on all the facts.
I agree that senior year should be eliminated if there is no upside educationally to it. If a student can get college credit and college level classes for that year, then it would make more sense.
@sarawer said, "i go 2 a priv. school, and ligit, senior yr is a joke"
Senior year is when many students learn to write, learn to spell, and learn punctuation. And some, the really good ones, also learn proper word choices.
No need for you to worry about your senior year -- it won't help.
I'd guess that you have a career pumping cesspools.
You see, Republicans are afraid of people getting a good education, and prefer a fairly--although not exclusively--large number of poorly educated drones who jump once the fear button is punched. It helps them ram through their agendas. To be fair, Democrats aren't helping matters by not getting behind better education with more enhusiasm.
In the end, stories like this are sad. Education is devalued enough as it is; how much more can it take?
havent they ever heard of terminating early over in Utah? where im from if you have all your credits you can just not come in or they leave blank spots in your schedule, but you cant take Sr classes your Jr year so you cant skip an entire year. I dont rly think colleges like early term though.
YNO, I think you are right. By senior year in Utah most seventeen year old girls have been married to their uncles for three years. As far as the Ultra right wing conservatives are concerned; they feel that the only education middle class kids should get is just enough to work in their factories. Just enough to handle boot camp when they send you off to die in one of their wars.
/shrug, the american public education system sucks...if you've got the credits to graduate junior year then do so. get into college and move on. for me it's more about changing the culture than anything else. as it stands, highschool is mostly a waste of time.
@LMA629 The problem is that they wouldn't go to college. They would be unemployed and unemployable and living on welfare or sponging off their parents. Have you talked to a 17 year old recently. Most arfe idiots who don't watch the news or ever read a newpaper. You would think they get their news online....Noooo! They don't care.
I feel that we should have an option to take a 13th year if we WANT to. Like so we can take purely electives and have a year to do what WE want, NOT what the SCHOOL/GOV'T WANTS. Of course it'd be COMPLETELY optional.
A better idea I heard is one school district offering scholarships to high school students who can complete all their credits in three years (or within half of senior year, not sure) and with AP classes. That's a better incentive I think.
You know? I'd love a 13th grade. I finished with 12 extra credits, but I really loved the school environment. I would have loved to stay another year just for kicks.
The police are not the first line of the government, it's the schools. High schools teach nothing about finances because the teachers union is infiltrated with neo-conservatives.
The more poor at studying the people who go to colleges are the more those colleges will position themselves to exploit a predicted group of drop-outs. A school that means to fail some fails all.
i hate it when they experiment with the school body like theyre guinea pigs or something. although I have to admit all the seniors ive actually seen in school (its rare) they are usually just jacking around or coming to school to take just one class or use the gym
-sighs- Some of us love to learn. I applied to a public charter school in my sophomore year. For 11th and 12 the grades, I stayed in a dorm (with curfew rules etc) and went to a school predominantly full of teachers who went by Dr. It was amazing. I could have 'slacked' off by not taking as many classes as I did, but I learned more about what I really liked to do and it wasn't anything to do with Linear or Integral Calculus.
This reports show how out of touch many reporters are with the real world. Senior slump was existed when seniors lack off because they had been accepted by a college and believed they could slack off now. However, colleges are revoking acceptance letters if a h.s senior's grades drop. Right now, an incoming freshman to UCLA or Berkeley needs to have 4.0 or higher with lots of volunteer work and extra-curricular activities.
I understand that the Senator is trying to trim the budget. But, for too long we have become accustomed to taking from education, for an example look at the ever diminshing arts programs in schools, or the percentage of tax levies to help schools that are passed or repealed or the number of schools who now have a "pay to play" policy in their sports. Then, as a whole, people want to complain about how poor our education is.
Seriously? Really? Colleges already get a ton of students who aren't mature enough to be there. The way things are now, high schools can't prepare their students for college no matter how many years they spend. High school teachers refuse to flunk anyone, slowing the whole class down. And of course, if you offer the students a choice, they won't come for the fourth year. If senior year is taken away, it won't be junior year that makes up for it. It will be the first year of college that suffers!
Sounds like the UK system. You're free to to finish at 16, but I think they're actually moving the age up to 18 now. A lot of kids just want to get out of education and into employment as soon as possible... meh
Most of my friends and I finished our required credits by junior year, except for 1 english credit. But we used senior year to take AP classes to get credit for college. I took AP Calculus, AP English and had taken AP history my junior year. I could have taken AP bio, but took an extra language. Saved me from having to pay for several classes.
This isn't a big deal, in the UK you can leave school in 4th, 5th, or 6th year. Which means when your roughly 16, 17 or 18. And that fine. I got into Uni when I was 17. Could work.
I loved my Senior! Why the hell would you cut that off? Also I agree with Ana on how teenagers go to college and aren't prepared for it. If 12 grade was cut off, will that make things better for teens when they go to college? I highly doubt that. This moron is insane.
The idea isn't as bad as it sounds. If you're smart then get an early start on a real education in college. If you're slow then get fitted for an orange or blue vest and start making a living so you can move out when you're 18.
conservatives have alot of fucked up views on education...here in texas they wanted to teach the bible in public schools....to compete against science....they also want to cut back on all the "ethnic" history....as in having people learn about the civil rights movement....and they want to do away with black history month...and latino heritage month....i guess their kids were getting exposed to too much diversity and knowledge of others cultural experiences
d15craxx, the cheapest option is community college which is about $1,500 per year which saves money for the first 2 years of a Bachelors. The most expensive option is private universities which can be about $40-50,000 a year including housing costs. The middle option is state or other public universities which can range a lot by state, anywhere from 15,000 to 30,000 a year including housing costs.
"Not only is our public school system broken it's superfluous because we have the Chinese and Indians to do our real critical thinking." -From The Mind of a Republican
It is true that when Republicans hear "cut education" they cum. When they hear "cut the police" or the military budget they go into convulsions and seizures.
@trajan74 "It is true that Republicans hear "cut education" they cum. When they hear "cut the police" or the military budget they go into convulsions and seizures." ~ That sums it up perfectly. Well said.
If seniors are slacking off the solution is to give them more work; not to cut grade 12. I've met too many Americans who can barely spell and don't understand basic science concepts.
As a Canadian, I found this pretty interesting. Ontario's school system used to go up to grade 13 until about the year 2000 I believe. Our system has adjusted so that every student can graduate with one spare by the end of grade 12. No slacking at all. It'll be interesting to see this unfold if it passes.
If anything, American students should be going to school more, not less. Why is education among the first things people suggest cutting? This country never ceases to disgust me.
I think having senior optional is okay....umm more like if you finish all credit by junior year and got into college...you can start going to college and still be part of the high school so you can like be part of prom or homecoming and all the stuff that senior year involves while you are getting ur college education...I dont see no harm in that...
It depends. If you want to be a scientist, engineer, etc then you need a college degree. If you want to be a welder then its another story. You're definitely not getting close to senior management or even middle without a bachelors and/or masters.
Oh yeah The UTAH senator is an idiot. But there is something to say about optional grades. If one takes a look into european systems that do far better. They have different levels of secondary schools that are tailored to the individuals ability and goals. I like Dutch system where they have one where its like uni and HS are kinda streamlined where overachievers can go the long route and get rigorous education, the slackers can go the short route and do technical school and there's a middle too.
My senior year was TERRIBLE, lol I couldn't wait to get out of HS. I had family problems which in turn left me unable to go to prom ( I had to uninvited my date!!! the worst thing I ever had to tell someone in my life.) I almost got kickout the house, The ONLY retribution I had was like cenk said, I had already did pretty decent in high school and nose dived lmao, my gpa dropped like .3 points. The only class I tried in was AP economics. Good times.
I disagree with the no pro sports thing. Thats REALLY gonna send star athletes overseas to europe for cash over college. I say, they're grown men and women, let them do whatever they want with their lives.
Hmm, not a bad idea, but what is better is just taking more classes and expanding your educational horizons because you're young and it's the only time in your life when you can really do it.
12th grade isnt really needed. in my 12th grade all i had to do was 2 classes out of 8. so in reality 12th grade really is a waste of time. except for athletes or people like that. so this is a very good idea
And are they even thinking about what colleges outside the state would think? Sorry, but not all of those kids want to stay in Utah (and I don't blame them)
Butters?? Wasn't that the guy who supported extending job and housing protections for gays but wouldn't support gay marriage and then said some quasi-homoerotic shit like "I don't want them stuffing down my throat all the time"? "I let them use the bathroom at my house"
Our public education system is in the shitter enough as it is, and this bozo in Utah wants to GET RID of 12th grade??? Oh yeah, that'll help. What it'll do is end up having students that do make it to college needing MORE remedial classes to get up to speed.
What's the big deal? There are already ways to legally not attend school beyond the age of 16. Look into Utah's educational code 53A-11-102
I don't live in Utah. But I do homeschool my kids (ages 18 and 11). I don't do it for religious reasons (atheist here). I support freedom and choice in education. Sometimes, the best choice, is to be done and move on. Senior year, half my day was study hall because I didn't need more credits. I wasn't even allowed to leave for half the day.
This is exactly why our country is one of the worst educated countries in the world. Because IDIOTS like this senator who think its a good idea to make senior year optional and to reduce the amount of education given by a year. Kids in Africa would give their right arms to go to high school, but here we are doing this. Disgusting. Just absolutely disgusting.
There's something even more obvious than the senior/junioritis thing. It's that if you have the credits to graduate after the junior year, you can already do that (where I live, and I assume in Utah.) So...this bill is meant to enforce something that already happens anyway.
Now, if the bill will drop the requirements or if their requirements are so lame to begin with, then the bill sucks. Coming from this guy, I'm betting this bill sucks.
lol. Cenk strikes you as the type of guy who would excel socially and love high school. As for most of us, we couldn't wait to get the hell out of there. :P
lol why didnt they think before? an even better idea is to just not have grades and make only core subjects like math, english and science mandatory so that most ppl can graduate earlier. this is the best idea by a republican so far besides the fact that the republican run school system is total shit anyway.
Im sorry but the fee's that are required to go to college/university in america are shameful.Education is the building block of civilisation/progress,to charge someone for the right to knowledge is like paying tax on oxygen, its not fair nor is it acceptable imo.
I wish they had that in California when I was a senior. Instead, I had to go to school until 12:30 PM, a waste of a year and it was boring as hell. If I could have finished HS junior year I would have. I don't believe juniors would then slack off, because they're cramming more classes in less time. 10th and 11th grade were the toughest years workload wise (and was when I had the most academic/honors/AP classes). Juniors (sophomores, hell even HS graduates) can go to the prom.
I disagree. I'm a senior in high school. I have been doing advanced courses all throughout high school, and I currently have all my credits necessary to graduate. However under California law I still have to go to school 6 hours a day taking stupid slacker classes like "TA" and "Study hall." I want to move on to college, but I can't. I'm costing the system money, and I'm being held back. Chris Butters makes a good point here. It's just a shame he's such a moron otherwise.
It's all about money to them...the current laws are made and geared towards those that learn more slowly and punish those that flourish and have drive... I know...study hall will really help your career... When I was in high school...it was the basics...and if I wanted more...I went to college. My son, while in high school took economics at college in the summer. They taught him in 2 months what public schools teach students in 9 months...Now why is that??????????
I'm trying to determine if your trolling or if the average Utah person is really just that stupid...ending school at 5th grade would leave utahs students even dumber then they already are, and would not be capable of doing ANYTHING.
Also, are you really this stupid? Throughout your posts you've changed the age school should end at like, 4 times, from 7th to fifth to freshmen ect..
Chris Buttars is TRULY Sarah Palin's DICKLESS and BALLESS BITCH and PUSSY! Palin is a SUPERIOR politician and statesman than Buttars could ever be. She is also MORE MAN than he is for Buttars wears the skirt in his family while his wife wears the pants!
Bob Jones University. Liberty University. That school that Hovind got his "degree" in. These institutions are proof that the American education system, if you are not at the elite level, is a disgrace. I mean, if you can get your doctorate at these places, the value of a doctorate is severely diminished.
Already the colleges are complaining about so many of our 4-year high school students not being adequately prepared--and a lot of them were getting As & Bs in high school. Now ship them off to college a year earlier with far less maturity and watch them flunk out even faster.
The world's best educational systems insist upon 12 or 13 years of school before being eligible for college. The USA invented the 12-year general high school education and it was a stunning sucess for over a century.
In my senior year, I think only two of my classes actually counted toward anything. Unless you're taking AP courses; there's no point. Also, the first year and a half of college is like a rehash of high school anyway. The flip side: for kids on top of their game, it might work, but probably not for the average student.
One last comment...there are so many "tests" now that students must pass...TAKS, TEKS, on and on and on...that the schools are wasting buttloads of time teaching our children HOW to take tests instead of teaching actual course content...I know of several parents that have home schooled their children and the child finished school at age 16, was able to pass the mandated tests, and were not "Dimwitted stupid idiots". That would be the equivalent of finishing in 10th grade!
America's education is horrible i studied in mexico and i was a bad student when i went to usa i teach the kids stuff the was easy for me and hard for them
I didn't realize high school in the U.S. is credit based. I would so love that over here! I was bored out of my mind during my last years of high school. I went to a strict school, but even so education is a joke over here as well in my opinion. It's not about actually understanding something or having insight. They just want you to memorize a textbook and spit it back out when you take a test. And it doesn't even matter what degree you get afterwards, as long as it's a bachelor or master.
Everyone, I have lived in Quebec and High school did finish in grade 11 there. The same as in England: after that you get the A level/Cegep with is also know as college... This goes to grade 13.
Stopping at grade 11 does not make you an idiot.
However, a grade 12 may be useful to some... The ideal solution will be to be able to go in a college after grade 11, or to go to grade 12 for more credit or if you are not decided. For the hiatus selection: I always tough it was b.s anyway.
On March 2009 the University of Puerto Rico held an international congress of research in education (I was lucky enough to be chosen to present on using video games as alternative literature in the English classroom and how this affects student motivation towards the language in the case of ESL students and towards language skills in the case of native speakers) and one of the Keynote Speakers was some contemporary Ph.D. from Missisipi (continued)
This Ph.D. spoke on end about current education and how it should start earlier than it does because some children come into school with conditions that can be identified as early as when they are three years old and educators could deal with these conditions from the get go. This might be a good idea (if you don't consider the carceral state of schools today) if it weren't because of this being a single step in an overall plan that he was advocating doing step by step and by regions (continued)
His eloquent new format for education, fluffed with a lot of words and contemporary theory, could be summed up into "kids start in school at 3 years of age, finish by 16, and then get to work or professional school. This will only apply to public schools because we can't force private schools to do that". The local secretary of education enthusiastically endorsed the Idea, but I took up the mic. and asked about the downsides of it: (continued)
early indoctrination, training to work professional or service, and so on. I emphasized the notion of "and then they go off to work or to some professional school" and the notion of "we can't force private schools to do it", which has the implication of "rich kids get a REAL education (or as real as it gets now-a-days) and then move on to the university to study science, liberal arts, law, medicine, or whatever, while poor kids get trained to be subserviant mechanics and plumbers. (continued)
I said this was a HORRIBLE idea, and the public (researchers and professors from around the world) agreed with me. That was the end of that issue. Now, we find out that a local government is taking off the last year of class. What's next? Take off junior year because of junioritis, force kids to start pre-preK at 3 years old, and indoctrinate them from early on that working hard for cheap is good and wholesome and they should know their place? This should deffinitely NOT be allowed.
They're not advocating taking off one year...they're saying there's too much waste and fluff in education and students need to get off their bums and learn and get on with it already! The bar needs to be set higher....they need to cover the courses in public education at a faster rate...they're boring students to DEATH and they do not and will not learn at such a pace. In the end...it's all about money for the states....
Overachieve? Awesome senior year? If these guys knew about IB, laziness would get you raped in that program. Technically I should be done with school, but IB got me by the balls as of late. And I wouldn't necessarily say that it's a "quality" education, even if it is prestigious. Ah, public school, screwing my love of learning.
Really it depends on how they change they system to make 12th grade optional. Really, you can already finish school in 11th grade or early, but it is difficult as there is not a clear path to complete school early, in general. But if Utah offered more classes to students in 9-11th grade so the students who wanted to worked hard and finish earlier could then great. I think taking 4 years of HS classes in 3 years would make you better prepared for college anyways.
That being said, I am not sure how much money schools would save if they had to offer more classes per day in order for students to finish school in 3 days. It would require a lot more classes either early morning or late afternoon in order to allow students get all their classes, and that would cost more money anyways. Maybe, it would be a little less costly both I would guess it would be a huge amount.
Personally, I would say no to that. I think electives, especially electives that provide college credits are a great edition to public schools. Not to mention trading a test for class time is a waste. Crammed studying so you can pass a test is not learning, it's short term memorization, which is one reason why language classes in school do not do so well. Keep the required credits the same, maybe even up them, but provide students a way to complete them at their own pace, fast or slow.
Butters is a moron and while I find his reasons behind the idea despicable, the idea itself I wouldn't have much of a problem with if public schools were actually delivering quality education in the first place. The CNN reporter and Cenk both make the assumption that EVERYONE enjoys high school. Personally, mine sucked ass and I went Post-Secondary during my junior year and started going to college, so I never had a senior year, and I don't care. Quality over quantity, people.
yew awr free tew hav yre kid dropp owt whenn yew awr reddy tew maek hym inntu a tiekune lyk yew. Butt yewr upinnyun duz nawt hav two innturfear wythe thu hole faet of sucietie.
Typical Republican. Wants America's kids to stay nice and stupid so that they'll support conservative politicians who are against their interests once they reach voting age.
I disagree with Cenk's assertion that if you cut out Senior year, then students will simply slack off in Junior year. The curriculum is still the same and so in order to complete all the classes and gather the necessary credits in 11th grade, they will have to work extra hard to do so.
it should be optional. high school was such a waste of time... i got D's and C's all through high school because it bored the fuck outta me, and by some miracle i got accepted into a high ranked Jesuit University... where I make A's and A-'s! I coulda skipped high school! In fact, back in the early days of Europe, kids went to the university at 14! We should stop dumbing our kids down with television, send them to school year round, and have a more competitive public education system.
"early days of Europe, kids went to the university at 14" in what age? Shit, going to school before Newton? Well, no physics or calculus to take. Biology? You can look at plants and animals, but DNA, evolution, reasonable medical science... I don't think so. Really, 90% of the classes take in college today didn't exists in the "early days of Europe" That is why, not because ppl where smarter then or even pushed harder.
People were able to go to university earlier because occupations were much less specialized than they are now. Today, the base amount of knowledge a person is expected to have is set at a much higher standard.
No, it's not...there are 3 levels and only ONE is required to graduate. Those driven and who care about their education strive for the higher standards... But, I will say, that one MUST go to university now, because basic knowledge from high school will get you no more than a minimum wage job - statistically speaking
I agree with that. However if that is then the case and America has always been founded on those who work hard to achieve something, we should logically raise the minimum standards of admission to universities. Otherwise, our universities will be, to a further extent than currently, plagued by a group of underachievers and champions of mediocracy. Which in turn would translate into a mediocre society as those habits formed in adolescence tend to continue through adulthood.
Well, hopefully these slackers learn the importance of advanced education as they age and, in fact, attend college. However, I don't think the standards need to be raised...remember they're not motivated and they're slackers...they'll get no where FAST anyway....they're weeded out after a semester or two of hard partying anyway...lol
thats not true, i've been slacking in school since 10th grade. the only credits i needed after 10th grade were English and economics, both of which were a total waste of time since i learned nothing i didn't already know. people don't slack just because their lazy they slack because they can :-] I'm in college now and i have to say, it's almost as easy as high school.
There are slackers that do so because they're lazy and those that are bored or simply have NO idea the value of education...until they have to start supporting themselves. The lazy ones or ones perhaps those with low self-esteem and NO support group from home do NOT make good college students and will burn out easily in college...nor will they finish college until they're older in age...seen it many many many times. :) Best of luck to you!
Clarify...they do not make good college students right out of high school. I've been told repeatedly by teachers in colleges that the best students are the older students. They're there because they WANT to be and they WANT to learn.
I am confused. My wife did this 20 years ago. She finished her credits halfway through her senior year & took the rest of year off to earn money for college. Except for the scholarship, how is this anything new?
Plus people skip grades all the time. I don't get the story
This is a terrible idea. It isn't just a question of what subjects and the number of credits. It is a question of maturity. A question of patience. A question of the role of education in a society. It is a question that also has to do with the concept of doing things that may be timeconsuming and tedious, possibly pointless, but in the adult world, those tasks are often encountered.
I have an idea.
How about we start cutting the paychecks of all these higher up government officials instead of cutting the education that EVERY American should have?

But because I had no "required" classes to fit into my schedule senior year, it allowed me to choose classes that I was interested in; things I actually WANTED to learn about. 12th grade should be optional. A lot of the kids who want to go to a 4-year school are there because they need the extra credit hours to get into college; the rest of the kids are just there because they have to be. They're not really learning anything that they actually need to succeed. Let them move on with their lives, learning a trade and whatnot.

havent they ever heard of terminating early over in Utah? where im from if you have all your credits you can just not come in or they leave blank spots in your schedule, but you cant take Sr classes your Jr year so you cant skip an entire year. I dont rly think colleges like early term though.
DixieOfDeKalbCounty 1 year ago
YNO, I think you are right. By senior year in Utah most seventeen year old girls have been married to their uncles for three years. As far as the Ultra right wing conservatives are concerned; they feel that the only education middle class kids should get is just enough to work in their factories. Just enough to handle boot camp when they send you off to die in one of their wars.

/shrug, the american public education system sucks...if you've got the credits to graduate junior year then do so. get into college and move on. for me it's more about changing the culture than anything else. as it stands, highschool is mostly a waste of time.

The more poor at studying the people who go to colleges are the more those colleges will position themselves to exploit a predicted group of drop-outs. A school that means to fail some fails all.

-sighs- Some of us love to learn. I applied to a public charter school in my sophomore year. For 11th and 12 the grades, I stayed in a dorm (with curfew rules etc) and went to a school predominantly full of teachers who went by Dr. It was amazing. I could have 'slacked' off by not taking as many classes as I did, but I learned more about what I really liked to do and it wasn't anything to do with Linear or Integral Calculus.
ehrenyu 2 years ago

Most of my friends and I finished our required credits by junior year, except for 1 english credit. But we used senior year to take AP classes to get credit for college. it depends...it ranges from a lot in community college, to an obscene amount in ivy league schools...
specifically though, community colleges might pay like $2-3000 per semester...
i don't even know about ivy league... at least tens of thousands per semester for sure
elnegrobembon 2 years ago
d15craxx, the cheapest option is community college which is about $1,500 per year which saves money for the first 2 years of a Bachelors. The most expensive option is private universities which can be about $40-50,000 a year including housing costs. The middle option is state or other public universities which can range a lot by state, anywhere from 15,000 to 30,000 a year including housing costs.

Oh yeah The UTAH senator is an idiot. But there is something to say about optional grades. If one takes a look into european systems that do far better. They have different levels of secondary schools that are tailored to the individuals ability and goals. I like Dutch system where they have one where its like uni and HS are kinda streamlined where overachievers can go the long route and get rigorous education, the slackers can go the short route and do technical school and there's a middle too.

whoo689 2 years ago
What's the big deal? There are already ways to legally not attend school beyond the age of 16. Look into Utah's educational code 53A-11-102
I don't live in Utah. But I do homeschool my kids (ages 18 and 11). I don't do it for religious reasons (atheist here). I support freedom and choice in education. Sometimes, the best choice, is to be done and move on. Senior year, half my day was study hall because I didn't need more credits. I wasn't even allowed to leave for half the day.
LunaGer 2 years ago
This is exactly why our country is one of the worst educated countries in the world. drakkeb 2 years ago

UnhealthySalad 2 years ago
I disagree. I'm a senior in high school. I have been doing advanced courses all throughout high school, and I currently have all my credits necessary to graduate. However under California law I still have to go to school 6 hours a day taking stupid slacker classes like "TA" and "Study hall." I want to move on to college, but I can't.

I went to a strict school, but even so education is a joke over here as well in my opinion. It's not about actually understanding something or having insight. This is bullshit, and I'll tell you why:
On March 2009 the University of Puerto Rico held an international congress of research in education (I was lucky enough to be chosen to present on using video games as alternative literature in the English classroom and how this affects student motivation towards the language in the case of ESL students and towards language skills in the case of native speakers) and one of the Keynote Speakers was some contemporary Ph.D. from Missisipi (continued)
DrQuijano 2 years ago
This Ph.D. spoke on end about current education and how it should start earlier than it does because some children come into school with conditions that can be identified as early as when they are three years old and educators could deal with these conditions from the get go. This might be a good idea (if you don't consider the carceral state of schools today) if it weren't because of this being a single step in an overall plan that he was advocating doing step by step and by regions (continued)
DrQuijano 2 years ago
His eloquent new format for education, fluffed with a lot of words and contemporary theory, could be summed up into "kids start in school at 3 years of age, finish by 16, and then get to work or professional school. This will only apply to public schools because we can't force private schools to do that". The local secretary of education enthusiastically endorsed the Idea, but I took up the mic. and asked about the downsides of it: (continued)
DrQuijano 2 years ago
early indoctrination, training to work professional or service, and so on. (continued)
DrQuijano 2 years ago
I said this was a HORRIBLE idea, and the public (researchers and professors from around the world) agreed with me. That was the end of that issue. Now, we find out that a local government is taking off the last year of class. What's next? Take off junior year because of junioritis, force kids to start pre-preK at 3 years old, and indoctrinate them from early on that working hard for cheap is good and wholesome and they should know their place? This should deffinitely NOT be allowed.
DrQuijano 2 years ago
They're not advocating taking off one year...they're saying there's too much waste and fluff in education and students need to get off their bums and learn and get on with it already! The bar needs to be set higher....they need to cover the courses in public education at a faster rate...they're boring students to DEATH and they do not and will not learn at such a pace. In the end...it's all about money for the states....

I think cutting off the second half of 12th grade seems reasonable.
Flamboyant8 2 years ago
Really it depends on how they change they system to make 12th grade optional. Really, you can already finish school in 11th grade or early, but it is difficult as there is not a clear path to complete school early, in general. But if Utah offered more classes to students in 9-11th grade so the students who wanted to worked hard and finish earlier could then great. I think taking 4 years of HS classes in 3 years would make you better prepared for college anyways.
Loathomar 2 years ago
That being said, I am not sure how much money schools would save if they had to offer more classes per day in order for students to finish school in 3 days. It would require a lot more classes either early morning or late afternoon in order to allow students get all their classes, and that would cost more money anyways. Maybe, it would be a little less costly both I would guess it would be a huge amount.
Loathomar 2 years ago

There's no reason to FORCE people to stay in high school after they've completed their required courses.

Typical Republican. Wants America's kids to stay nice and stupid so that they'll support conservative politicians who are against their interests once they reach voting age.

i had enough credits by sophomore year.
XD
i'm just chillin' now. :P
pwnrzero 2 years ago
This is a bad omen. At my highschool you could already do that if you had enough credits.

I disagree with Cenk's assertion that if you cut out Senior year, then students will simply slack off in Junior year. The curriculum is still the same and so in order to complete all the classes and gather the necessary credits in 11th grade, they will have to work extra hard to do so.

Senior Year is the best year of your High School Life!
It was for me!

optional?! these are steps towards dumb-ing down people even more.

WORST IDEA EVER!
You need to mature before you enter college. You cant have HS juniors going to college... its just not good on so many levels.
UltimoLatino 2 years ago 3
They should make it optional. The smart students get rewarded, the dumb asses have to stay and study.
AnotherAgnostic 2 years ago
it should be optional. high school was such a waste of time... i got D's and C's all through high school because it bored the fuck outta me, and by some miracle i got accepted into a high ranked Jesuit University... where I make A's and A-'s! I coulda skipped high school! In fact, back in the early days of Europe, kids went to the university at 14! We should stop dumbing our kids down with television, send them to school year round, and have a more competitive public education system.
rushindulen 2 years ago
"early days of Europe, kids went to the university at 14" in what age? Shit, going to school before Newton? Well, no physics or calculus to take. Biology? You can look at plants and animals, but DNA, evolution, reasonable medical science... I don't think so. Really, 90% of the classes take in college today didn't exists in the "early days of Europe" That is why, not because ppl where smarter then or even pushed harder.

People were able to go to university earlier because occupations were much less specialized than they are now. Today, the base amount of knowledge a person is expected to have is set at a much higher standard.
VolatileReaction 2 years ago
No, it's not...there are 3 levels and only ONE is required to graduate. Those driven and who care about their education strive for the higher standards... But, I will say, that one MUST go to university now, because basic knowledge from high school will get you no more than a minimum wage job - statistically speaking
TexasMom17 2 years ago
I agree with that. However if that is then the case and America has always been founded on those who work hard to achieve something, we should logically raise the minimum standards of admission to universities. Otherwise, our universities will be, to a further extent than currently, plagued by a group of underachievers and champions of mediocracy. Which in turn would translate into a mediocre society as those habits formed in adolescence tend to continue through adulthood.
scrantme 2 years ago
Well, hopefully these slackers learn the importance of advanced education as they age and, in fact, attend college. However, I don't think the standards need to be raised...remember they're not motivated and they're slackers...they'll get no where FAST anyway....they're weeded out after a semester or two of hard partying anyway...lol
TexasMom17 2 years ago
thats not true, i've been slacking in school since 10th grade. the only credits i needed after 10th grade were English and economics, both of which were a total waste of time since i learned nothing i didn't already know. people don't slack just because their lazy they slack because they can :-] I'm in college now and i have to say, it's almost as easy as high school.
satbir129 2 years ago
There are slackers that do so because they're lazy and those that are bored or simply have NO idea the value of education...until they have to start supporting themselves. The lazy ones or ones perhaps those with low self-esteem and NO support group from home do NOT make good college students and will burn out easily in college...nor will they finish college until they're older in age...seen it many many many times. :) Best of luck to you!
TexasMom17 2 years ago
Clarify...they do not make good college students right out of high school. I've been told repeatedly by teachers in colleges that the best students are the older students. They're there because they WANT to be and they WANT to learn.
TexasMom17 2 years ago 2
I am confused. My wife did this 20 years ago. She finished her credits halfway through her senior year & took the rest of year off to earn money for college. Except for the scholarship, how is this anything new?
Plus people skip grades all the time. I don't get the story

This is a terrible idea. It isn't just a question of what subjects and the number of credits. It is a question of maturity. A question of patience. A question of the role of education in a society. It is a question that also has to do with the concept of doing things that may be timeconsuming and tedious, possibly pointless, but in the adult world, those tasks are often encountered.

Yeah US high school graduates are too smart we dont need grade 12.
That is why US has the best education system in the world.
