@Allisonlovessamiches In the beginning, Wesley was too much of an author avatar for Gene Roddenberry and crossed into Mary Sue territory. As a child, he was smarter than most Star Fleet officers and even became a member of the crew without any formal training when everyone else had to go through years of classes at the Academy.
@DevilTakeMe maybe, but mentally gifted people do exist. imagine a gifted genius that didn't grow up in what is basically a poluted wasteland of corpaorate warfare like we have. not only would they have all of the advantages of what we call high IQ but none of the brakes that we have (chemicals in food, water, air, residual radiation left over from 'beatin the commies' et cetera). in this context wesley's is not such a far fetched character. it's really just a mix of bad acting and brain envy...
@cwross1976 Yes, gifted people exist. But they are gifted, not perfect. The problem is that Wesley was put into the forefront of too many early episodes as a plucky insufferable genius with no faults. Again, it's because Wesley was Gene Roddenberry's "Pet character," not simply because he's gifted.
It wasn't until much later that Wesley's characterization became bearable. A much later episode, "the First Duty" is finally when Wesley gets some decent development.
rofl! I'm curious, I haven't seen every episode and i wanted to know what that one was called

I'm curious if this was purposely a take-off on the exact same scene in the movie Animal House, or it was a coincidence.
