  • Hot chocolate makes my kids have to poop, probably the dairy though. That's why we drink hot cocoa in the AM when we camp.

  • That's why I like wild game it's healthy and you just can't go wrong with the taste and nutrition.

  • Man, you love you some hot chocolate!! You have great videos. Easy and simple common man know how. I can't remember how or what video I stumbled upon but that same day I subscribed and have been trying to catch up in all your videos since. I loved the show as well. Sucks it's not on anymore. Dual survival was the mans reality show for me.

  • ma che è sta cosa????

  • I find your videos so helpful, thank you for sharing your insights.

  • Gotta respect him for enjoying the simple pleasures like a nice hot meal so much!

  • paleolithic diet is the best!!

  • how would you refrigerate any thing out there

  • @zane000000000 leave it outside in the bucket lol

  • @devildogsrule101st what happens if it is summer?

  • @zane000000000 He would'nt do that, it's about having foods that does not require refrigeration.

  • i was expecting u to dunk the hard tack when u made it

  • Wathcing this is making me hungry!

  • watching this video is making me hungry

  • What kind of mug is your "scout" mug? Keep up the good work. Always enjoy these vids.

  • a few things you should know about cholesterol (a refutation of the "cholesterol is bad" myth)

    /watch?v=PqCjP-UfOa8

  • Hard-boiled eggs are also a great trail food. Already cooked, full of nutrients, and they'll keep awhile.

  • Dave you inspire me bro keep up the good work. You made me want to get a goat and when i graduate college I'm going to go up in the mountains for a month to practice self reliance. Keep up the good work. Nice video. Sincerely, Harut, aka huntrtrapr

  • @huntrtrapr i love you too harut. P.S. my name is bubba and I'm here to fart in your bed

  • @Rennrock02 smh

  • Thank you Dave for learning me how to make Hardtack - Also my mother was very happy to see such a mess in the kitchen :P ( Not ) :)

  • Ate a corn fritter with scrambled eggs while watchin, it's been a while since I've had so satisfying a meal =)

  • @wildernessoutfitters Are you and Cody Lundin going to do more Dual Survival? I'm 14 but I'm big on self-reliance and it's my favorite show...

  • You said those eggs were from the chickens you raise. I was just wondering how long since they were laid did you try to boil them? In my experience, you have to let them sit out a while before you boil them if you wanna be able to peel them real easy.

  • Dave, you have a great video series going. I bet you have eaten a lot of different eggs in your time. Have you ever covered any of that in your books or outings, what eggs to eat if you have no chicken eggs around?. Take care, hope to see many more yurt vids.

  • The absolute easiest way to peel a egg hot or cold tap a couple times of course then lay it down and roll it a couple times with light down ward pressure a couple rolls and the peel will come rite off.

  • how to make hot chocolate. you take 3 spoon of chocolate powder mix with water and den you slurp

  • I'm surprised you went with a modern aluminum non stick pan over cast iron. Is there a reason for that or did you just grab whatever was laying around?

  • you should try to make some furniture for your yurt, make it more rustic and authentic looking for the longhunter series. would be real interesting. you already have the skills in carving.

  • i love your journal! just a little tip, eggs peel a lot easier out of their shells if you shock them in cold water after you boiled them. i know it's not always possible or wise depending on the situation you are in. but in this case, you have the creek right there and i am sure the water is plenty cold. merry xmas!!!!

  • could you use regular sugar instead of brown sugar

  • lol. us hillbillies in west virginia call that biscuit you made there "skillet pone" I grew up on that. try it with a little kayro syrup. Thats livin right there son.

  • Dave, in a survival situation can the five second rule go up to 5hrs?? Thanks for everything brother!

  • I keep chickens and don't wash their eggs until I use them, which is often within a week anyway. It looks more natural to have a row of eggs covered in what happened by nature. And man they are so much better than even free range eggs from the stores. Maybe because I let my chickens dig for worms when I'm turning the soil. Well, they insist on helping me.

  • Add a little salt to the water that you boil that egg in and the shell will come off a lot easier during the peeling.

  • You are absolutely right about the egg but it is not healthy if you eat too much of it "everything in moderation" Dave, I thought it was breakfast?? And Dave Do you really believe in the 5 second rule LOL. Keep them up I believe in your approach to life.

  • as a side note. if you are in a long term situation, eggshells have good calcium so if you grind em up real fine and mix em into a dough or stew to where you wont notice they are easy to consume

  • @johnnyboy922 Good point johnnyboy922. I feed my shells back to my chickens and mix a little into my compost. The same can be true for bones if ground up. :)

  • That yurta is like a small hotel! Actually when my mother travelled in Mongolia she stayed in yurta hotel ;-)

  • Dave what about putting the egg in the biscuit instead of water?

  • Fantastic video Dave and right on about the egg.

  • Why not just burn your food waste in the fire? Seems like the best way to keep the critters from coming after it.

  • awesome

  • Dave...u have sugar and water....make a simple syup/glaze for that biscuit bro

  • @anubis1335

    I approve of this

  • i have chickens an i get more eggs that i can eat. i hard boil 10 very time i when i will be out in about in the woods and eat them throughout the day. i don't find them to be a nuance if they crack, because thy are still ok to eat.

  • Dear Dave,

In this video you speak of over eating. I'm from Central Ontario Canada. I was over weight until not to long ago. It was your video's on youtube and Dual survival that inspired me to get off of the couch and get outside. I just want to say thank you for all of your hard work and for all your inspiration. Keep up the good work. Thanks.

  • You may already know this trick, but scramble an egg inside a ziplock bag and boil it to cook the egg. You can eat it right out of the bag or turn it inside out onto a plate. The bag can be easily cleaned and used again.

  • Do I hear guineas in the background?

  • Organic crap. Amen. Amen.

  • If you want to know if the egg is done, just spin it on its side on top of that table. If it spins like a top it's done. If it wobbles all over it's raw or soft boiled depending on how bad the wobble is.

  • Hey, bugs are nature's perfect food. They're full of complete amino acids, fatty acids, minerals/vitamins and no bad cholesterol! ;P Just imagine you're eating a very, very strange, small egg haha.

  • love your vid's as much as you love hot chocolate brother!!! i have a 10 year old son,he and i love to camp, and hike. don't know if you have heard of the Sipsey river trail, but its a great place to go hiking and camping in Alabama. come down and try it out sometime. Tony

  • why is going organic "crap"?

  • yea eggs....or anything for that matter can be bad for you if you eat a lot of..but 1-2 eggs in a day even everyday as long as you don't eat like crap and have some form of exercise to burn the bad stuff off you will be fine.

  • I wanna be like dave but the comin woman!

  • So if you eat eggs everyday, (which i totally agree with you about them being natures best), how do you deal with the hard boiled egg farts in the yurt?

  • @jraybu09 he embraces them like every man does....*sniff* Mmmmmm

  • My Anthropology teacher said the same thing about eggs, minus the salute.

  • Three things will last through an apocalypse... Cockroaches, Twinkies, and guys like you Dave! HaHa In such a sissy, over-comforted country in a technologically run day-in-age, it's good to see more commonmen like yourself

  • that meal looked awesome!

  • organic food isn't crap. Why you hatin on organic food?

  • Dave, if you break your eggs into the freezer baggie and add peppers, mushrooms, onion, garlic cheese. Close Ziploc squeeze bag to beat eggs. put baggie in boiling water five minutes. You have a no mess, no dishes omelet. works awesome! keep up the awesome work! Thank you

  • Dave, if you crack your eggs in the Ziploc baggie you can beat them by squeezen the bag add mushrooms, cheese, peppers what have you and put the baggie in boiling water about five minutes and whala you have a easy no mess omelet!! Best of all no dirty dishes!! Thank You for all your valuable information.

  • Dave if you peel your egg in water it will be much easier as the water will infiltrate the air pockets.

  • I was raised on eggs, fried, scrambled, boiled, poached, omlette, just about any way you can think of. If someone starts running their mouths about eggs, I tell them to kiss me where the sun doesnt shine and shut their yaps.

  • Never knew that eggs were loaded with vitamins!

  • @robcas631 And plenty of nutricious fat that your body might be low on in a survival situation.

  • Good video Dave. If you need to store some purchased eggs for awhile you can wax them to seal them. Not as good as God's way but a good sub. in a pinch and if you cool that egg in a little cold water when finished cooking it makes it easier to peel. Try it poached too and you can have a little yolk to dip the corn bread in. As miss America said, "YUMMY".

  • Tile floor?

  • The 5 second rule, rules :)

  • Can the corn be mixed with a amount of egg white, to tutn it into more stiff stuff, that could be rolled over sausage, etc meat ? Just wondering as corn flour aint common here at all.

Love these field cooking videos, make me hungry.

  • You can try to make an egg with potato too. Just take a big potatoe, slit the top off it away, carve the insides so that the egg fits in snugly. Then wrap the top back in,use fresh root to tie it,or hell, wrap it in a tinfoil, and then you can put the agg filled potatoa to the embering coals for a while and its good to go after a while. Good trick when you run out of any pots and containers but have potatoes.

  • Another outstanding video Dave. Thx

  • Man I'm hungry ... continue with these cooking videos that Discovery H&H or Fox Life will invite you to do a program like "Cooking in the bush with Dave Canterbury". Brother, I love your videos and wish the best for you and your family. God bless you all.

  • Hey, Dave! I enjoyed sharing dinner with you too! Let me ask you about your sweet cornbread cake. (my dear mother--growing up poor in rural Florida--called them "hoe cakes") Did you use any lard in the batter or in the pan? It sure browned up nicely! I agree with about the egg--that was a right-good meal that'll stick to your ribs for sure! Thanks for all the great videos!

  • haha love the whoops five second rule bit haha

  • The yurt series that you've put together has given me some insight. I've spent my earlier years hunting and fishing but never have seen topics of survival the way that you have presented them. Being able to survive in the outdoor is a must. You just never know when you be in a situation where you will need these skills of self preservation. Great series on the yurt. Keep em coming..

  • why do you always use corn meal?

  • Great series on the Yurt, really liking it. Hope to see some more of the traditional cooking and some hunting video's. Thanks Dave for your wonderful humor and your time sharing in your adventures. Thanks for sharing...

  • Very interesting about the film on eggs.

  • The Eleventh 'C' of Survivability:

    Chocolate...Hot!

I wonder how chocolate hardtack would taste? I was glad to see you dip the cornflour bread cause I was waiting for you to dip the hardtack and was disappointed.

Great series so far . I also think it is cool how you mentioned in a previous vid about your reading the Bible each night. You didn't knock anybody else , but are unapologetic and straightforward in your statements concerning your beliefs. Good on ya, Brother.

  • Just a question Dave. Do you think it would be a good idea to turn that eggshell into a powder and perhaps mix it with you tea or something to get extra minerals into your survival diet...or would it do more harm than good?

  • Dave, dunno if anyone else has posted it but a trick to pealing a hard boiled egg easily is to tap it on somewhat of a sharp edge (edge of the pan would do just fine) so that you kind of make a crack in form of a ring around the egg. You can also do it on a flat surface. The important thing is the ring. If done correctly, you should be able to peal the egg in two whole pieces.

  • Dave, do you need a room mate in your yurt? I promise not to poop in the bucket!

  • @elpadrino1024 in actuality, He and his Wife Iris are living in the yurt. it's only a 12'x12' yurt and thats barely big enough for two people. Though I would love to have my own yurt on the Pathfinder School Property. Just live off the grid.

  • Great video. I always give my egg shells back to my chickens. They eat the shells for extra calcium. That way you don't have to buy a calcium supplement for them.

  • My family raises chickens and we noticed that the older eggs seem to be easier to peel when they are hard boiled. I'm sharing this vid with my mom and then I'm getting myself some hot chocolate.

  • if im gonna die im gonna die full of food thit i like to eat

  • Those 3 scoops of hot chocolate were huge! I think you could have made a cup with each scoop! LOL

  • Hi Dave try make a small hole in the egg in the bottom with a needle or something like that. The water goes into the egg under the shell between the membrane and the rest of the egg. It separates the membrane thats usually the reason why its hard to peel because it sticks to the cooked egg white. Then when you peel it the shell will come of real easy.

  • ...they're no longer 3 heaping tsp.,now they're like way over-flowing !!!...I hope it doesn't become a problem !

  • Best way i found to peel a hard boiled egg is to break the shell and then Roll it along the table\work surface and the shell just slides off

  • If you put a small hole in the large end of the egg with a pin it makes it easier to peel. Also if you put it in water that is luke warm, the egg will be done when the water boils and you let it stand (take it off flame) for about 10 mins.

  • Hey dave love the video's, How long can you carry a boiled egg before you wouldn't want to eat it?

  • You're right Dave! My Dad's Mom was Cherokee, and I used to see her eat raw bacon and hamburger right out of the Fridge for a quick snack. And I would say; 'Grandma! You can't eat that stuff raw'. LOL And she would say; 'Now Jimmy! If you tell me what to do one more time, I'll mash your mouth'. Hehe. She was so sweet! And lived just shy of her 90TH birthday. My buddy Tim ate everything organic and exercised almost daily, never smoked. Died/Brain Tumor at 49. Live smart, BUT LIVE!. Goodnight Bro.

  • If you use eggs that are at least ten days old, you won't haunt trouble peeling them.

    Great series. Keep 'em comin'

    Tex

  • Dave, do you ever do coffee or tea ?

  • I love that Dave's scoops of hot chocolate are getting bigger and bigger

  • The 5 second rule doesn't apply when you are eating it. It is when you work at a restaurant and spill it on the floor. Then you just pick the hair off of it and throw it back on the grill for a few seconds. All good.

  • If the chickens don't have access to all the minerals in their feed (greens and bugs0 they won't have the complete nutrients. Also, in the winter, the chickens will become vitamin D deficient and stop laying, and won't start again until they get more light. it must be UVB light which is puny in the winter unless you live closer to the equator. remember, if the chicken isn't getting the vitamin, she's not putting it into the egg.

  • hahahaha yeah the five second rule!

  • LOL Seems Dave's definition of "high living" is drastically different from mine... And if a piece of bread, a hard boiled egg, and cocoa is a meal fit for a king... a prison must seem like a palace to him. You are FAR from a common man Dave.. and thats why we love your videos

  • Hey Dave do you think you could do a video on all the essential ingredients you should stock in a camp pantry to make your basic recipes to survive on for a medium term stay.

  • Peeling eggs is made easier by lightly pressing it against a hard surface and rolling it to make cracks all around it. Then the shell will often easily come off along with the inner membrane in one or a few pieces.

  • Watched the first 30secs. LOVE IT!!!

  • If you want to add a little calcium to your diet you can grind up an egg shell every once in while and sprinkle it into your food because the egg shell is 100% calcium. The fine egg shell powder can also be used for other things like an abrasive for polishing a rusty knife or gun.

  • Good to see/find, you here on youtube, Dave,.... your making me hungry man! Looks good! Look forward to more videos, Take Care.

  • i agree with dave. if you can raise chickens naturally to provide your eggs u have nothing to worry about. the cholesterol thats in the eggs is actually vital to many of your bodies functions.

  • I don't know about the health issues, but eggs are good so I eat them. You probably die more staring at a computer screen or texting on your I-thing than eating a freakin' egg.

  • Hey Dave, nice to see aracauna/americauna eggs being used. I've always loved the breed.

I keep a pair of extremely tame urban bantam chickens in my back yard, they fill all my egg needs for virtually nothing despite being mostly 'pets'.

  • I'd just add the egg to the biscuit mix. I'm to lazy to peel the egg. It does make it seem like you're eating more if you boil it though. Not just 1 biscuit then.

  • Dave if you want an egg to peel super easy add salt to the water.

  • As a kid we called the bread you made " HOT WATER BREAD "

  • Dave : What supplements do you recommend to stay alert and healthy in everyday life?

  • Dave, if there is one thing i hope for whenever i watch your videos it's that one day you'll give up smoking. Even if you don't give it up, at least you might try to grow your own tobacco and start using a hand carved pipe or something. Heck, you can even try to make a series out of it. That would be more Longhunter-ish right :) It's gotta be loads better than smoking the commercial brand cigarettes packed full-o-chemicals.

  • Love this series dave!

  • what are the blue tiles under for fire place?

  • Comment removed

  • Hard Boiled Egg = Boneless Chicken Dinner!

  • Dave- next time you boil an egg, try taking your knife and tapping the egg in the middle like you would a coconut. Normally, It makes the shell come off in big chunks instead of tiny pieces. Don't know why it works that way but it does most of the time.

  • It's a shame you don't have way to lower the ceiling while sleeping. You would only have to heat half the space.

  • great vids enjoying the project, that meal looked a lot better than some of the crap you and cody ate out in the bush!!!:) keep them coming!!!

  • This has been such a fun series, thank you.

  • I seriously love these videos. I love the, chilling with Dave in the yurt perspective. Looks like the best breakfast ever. Everything tastes better on the trail.

  • Are you having any mice problems ? Are you trapping coons and opossums near the creek

  • p.s. the way i learned to make hard boiled eggs, is bring the water to a full boil with the egg in, then immediately take it off the heat and let the egg cook for approx 15 minutes, then put the egg in ice / cold water. the eggs are less rubbery, the yolk should not have the grey this way, and they are much easier to peel! much respect and thanks for the vids!

  • another great vid dave. i agree, eggs should be a staple food for everyone. the cholesterol thing is overhyped. eggs have good cholesterol, good fat. as you know, we all need fat in our diets. calories from fat are better than from carbs from grains or refined sugars. cage free organic eggs for me because they don't use antibiotics, the chickens get to go outside a cage, more humane and healthier, more nutritional value in the eggs that way! raising your own chickens, even better!

  • I hear that if you dip a hardboiled egg in cold water it will shell easier...

  • Does the creek you get you water from have any fish to eat?

  • "oop five second rule." ha love it

  • Hi Dave, Thanks for the yurt journal videos and all the others you have made. I am learning a great deal of useful information. I will be at Shot Show I hope to see you there!

  • LOL, cornbread and an egg. Sure, it meets the bare minimum requirements to call it a meal, but you're kind of exaggerating when you say:

"That's a meal fit for a king right there"

Unless of course you're referring to Burger King! ^^

  • glad you mentioned eggs. It may or may not be of interest to anyone, but one thing I always keep around during ANY extended trip is Pickled eggs. they are a little time consuming to make but, like you said, eggs are the perfect food and pickled eggs will keep for a long time without much care. All you have to do is soak hardboiled eggs in your favorite pickle juice or jalapeno, peproncinni, well anything pickled for a few days. Just thought I would throw that out there. food for thought

  • You can break a couple of eggs into one of those Zip Lock bags, add onions, peppers, etc. then drop it into a pan of boiling water for about 10 min and you will end up with tube shaped omelet.

  • @MBlackford100 But that's not all! Do it right now and get these lovely carcinogenic particles, baked right into your omelette, absolutely free!

  • @theredscourge I would not doubt it, but we have been doing it with the Scouts for years without any problems.

  • Cool video, made me hungry. Take care and thanks for sharing.

  • bring cody in for a weekend cameo!!!!!then you would have some peanut butter ricipies.

  • Wow, it’s amazing how many replies my initial comment got. What’s even more amazing (yet very normal) is how many people replied about things I haven’t even said! Humans are odd like that. Anyway, I never said anything about or against meat, I have no idea why I got 10 replies about it, it was never even mentioned or addressed at in my comment. Way odd. Anyway a survival situation in itself is not normal life anyway therefore what you eat is what you can so health in this respect is irrelevant.

  • You are living my dream!!!!! Just simplifying life, and being grateful for what you got.

  • Have some water with that chocolate lol

  • lol your chocolate powder was spilling off the sides

  • Don't you ever make coffee?

  • Just wondering what would be your opinions on cooking food "well" as to say using conventional ideologies of, if you dont think its good dont eat it? (or would this be food specific?

  • dude your making me hungry

  • I think that you got more hot chocolate on the table than in your cup!

  • Dave, are all eggs edible?

  • To back Dave up in the fat an cholesterol BS that so many people worry about. There was a 30 years study and the results were peer reviewed that was released in mid 2010. The study was on saturated fats and if they actually caused heart disease and blockage of the veins in and of themselves. No study had been done on this before. What doctors have been telling people were all assumptions. The results clearly indicated that there is no link between saturated fats and heart disease.

  • You can also eat that egg raw, home grown eggs are very safe. Even store bought eggs the chance of getting salmonella is very very low.

  • iv noticed a few cross's are you a christian :)

  • i guess hot chocolate has good energy, as i found from scout trips

  • Dave now you have made me want to go and live the winter in a shelter.Love the Vids from the yurt feel like i am with ya in a way.

  • I crack up every time you scoop the hot chocolate and spill it on the desk or floor on the way to the cup...haha! Odd sense of humor I guess... It's very mountain man-ish anyhow.

  • Cooking with Survival Santa makes me Hungry think ill go make a cornbread cake sounds real good Thanks Dave.

  • Hey Jeff From Jbegcards, Man Brother Dave You Made Me Want Hot Chocolate, Now I'am Watching All Your Yurt Video's And, Drinking Hot Chocolate. "Happy Holidays", Thank's Like Alway's For The Video's And, Help. Hope To See You Soon.

  • I heard that if you coat an egg in vasoline or lard that it will stay good for months. Something about it being an oxygen barrier.

  • Obviously in an EOTWAWKI scenario, this riggin would not be a back pack from one locale to another. Looks like you have at least a half a pick-up load of gear and supplies there. So it would seem portability is not the main priority, unless it's more a migratory set-up with several weeks between travels. Even so, not on foot with a back pack. Right? Or, maybe it just beats the hell out of sleepin' on the couch when the ol' lady is mad!

  • im glad its not just me that gets it in the neck for slurping

  • You should run for president.

  • @borntobewildlyawsome

DAVE CANTERBURY for PRESIDENT !!!!!!, the world would be a better place

  • @louisianasniper dave and uncle ted nugent would make it a GREAT PLACE

  • @borntobewildlyawsome Heck yea, he has my vote.

  • @borntobewildlyawsome Dave for president ? That's not a bad idea. He could be the first president in history to live in the "White Yurt" . When Cody comes to visit he could sleep in the "Lincoln Log Bedroom". State Dinners would be awesome.... cornbread bisquits, a boiled egg and a cup of hot chocolate for 600 people. DAVE 2016 !!

  • @borntobewildlyawsome be safer eating eggs aye dave!
