And it's funny you say democracy did this, when Karl Marx himself said "democracy is the road to socialism". The USSR didn't fall apart due to democracy, it was the frivolous soviet spending on the cold war and other projects that lead to economic decline, by the time Gorbachev was in office, it was too late to reverse it.

US Congress has only 2% now. Soviet citizens was allowed to have weapons - mostly for hunting - over 12 mln units. For example all SVT-40 was sold to civilians right after WW2, not to mention tonnes of weapons remained after battles, my grandfather stored MG-42 in a backyard.

USSR was destroyed EXACTLY after so called "democratic reforms" - called Perestroika, genius. First thing that he did was to push CPSU out of power. But even with its economy sabotaged by Gorbachev and his IMF hitmen - USSR never spent more than 8,4% of its GNP on defense in late 1980s. Had no significant debt either, just as it increaced 8 times - to 100 bln $ during years gorbachev was in power. USSR had ZERO economical and political reasons to fail - this event was absolutely artificial.
